Happy Guy Fawkes/Bonfire Night/November 5th!

I suppose this is strictly a British celebration...Is there anyone on Evo who's English like myself? Having a good night? TEH FIREWORKS W00T! :nooo: Do Australians celebrate November 5th?

Erm, well for anyone not familiar with the celebration...back sometime in the 1600s in England, there were a few Catholic renegades who wanted the English government...well, screwed. So, a secret plot (aka, The Gunpowder Plot) unfolded: a bunch of these rebels managed to stash a huge amount of gunpowder in a cellar in The Houses Of Parliament. They wanted to blow the building sky-high and kill every politician inside. It later turned out that they had stockpiled enough powder to blow half of London to hell. The man responsible was Guy Fawkes. Of course, they were eventually caught in the act and were sentenced to death in fact. Quite horribly. If I remember correctly, Fawkes was hung, drawn and quartered, i.e. he was half-hung, tied up to a chariot and dragged round the gallows and then cut into four pieces.

Being nice, un-barbaric English people, we celebrate his death every November 5th with massive bonfires (some people say that the treasonous scum (ahhh, I feel all Imperial) were burnt at the stake) and copious amount of fireworks. Kids run around with sparklers and everyone has a good time. A good booze-up too ;).

But because I've been living in Ireland since 2002, I haven't been in the UK to experience it. Fortunately, some nice neighbours have discovered our primal celebration and are letting off fireworks somewhere north of where I live.

Happy Guy Fawkes! Wooooooo :dance3:

I heard about Guy Fawkes ay from 'V for Vendetta', alot of it was lost on me but my British mate cleared it all up. Sounds like the Queen's Brithday celebrations we have down-under aka. fireworks night.
