Title: What games are you looking forward to on the Wii?
Red the Ghost - October 22, 2006 12:05 AM (GMT)
Well, Twilight Princess is a giveaway, but I'm also wanting to get my hands on Red Steel, Excite Truck, Mario Galaxy, and of course, when it finally comes out, the one and only Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Looking forward to alot of other games as well, but those are the tops.
Oh, and of course I'm definitely downloading as much as I can on the Virtual Console....
What are you all looking forward to getting?
borgster101 - October 22, 2006 01:06 AM (GMT)
For launch:
Zelda: Twilight Princess
Have been waiting for this one for a while, to play it was early as possibly I'll need a Wii and so I'll be getting one. I dont know whether it will be better than the GCN version, I think some elements like fishing will be more fun on Wii, while the rest will be on par with the cube version, either way it's Zelda, and who knows maybe the motion will get me more into the game.
Red Steel
After watching the latest videos, I'm pumped for this game, it doesnt look perfect, but it's desgined from the ground up for Wii, I think it's going to be enjoyable and it looks like its taking advantage of the Wiimote nicely. Sword fighting isn't one to one, but again it doesnt have to be, it would probably be broken if it was. It's looking promising and from the latest versions those who have played it believe so.
Rayman Raving Rabbids
Not really sure how this is on other platforms, but the Wii game is the true version, it's basically like WarioWare but will be for launch, and looks like it will be a lot of fun that even my parents will be able to play :D
Call of Duty 3 (out of interest to see how the Wii build holds up)
Wii Play ($80AU with a Wiimote = good deal)
After launch:
Excite Truck (not a launch title in AU)
Reminds me a lot of Burnout, so it's one to watch out for, Wiimote use is subtle but it looks like it works
WarioWare Smooth Moves
Similar to Rayman, crazy mini games look to be a lot of fun with this controller.
Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
It's the next Prime game, enough said really. Another more traditional game on Wii, which is what we want to see (in addition to new styles of games), I'm glad its been pushed back should mean its going to be more polished. Wiimote functions sound interesting, again it's more about bringing you into the game more, whether it will be better than normal controls remains to be seen, but whats for sure is its a new Metroid game and it will be great :D
Super Mario Galaxy
This one is looking fantastic, Mario platform action with from the looks of it clever use of the Wiimote, you have the on screen "pointer" that can be used to interact with the game world around Mario, something you cant really do with a normal controller, unless you used a second stick but it would be too clumsy. And the space theme rocks :D
Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles
Haven't heard much on this one yet, but if it is what it sounds like it will be RE4 style, then it should be great. Bridging the gaps between CV and RE4 is also appreciated, should be a great complement to RE5 on the 360.
Fire Emblem: Godess of the Dawn
This is basically the sequel to Path of Radiance, no real fancy motion controls here, but hey it doesnt need them. Sure it could work on Cube, but we have to face facts the GCN is dead and we cant expect games to be released on it, nor for retailers to sell them, so if the Wii sells better than the GCN did it will be better for "traditional games" like this anyway, even if they dont use motion controls, they are going to get more exposure than what they would get on the GCN.
Batallion Wars II
Enjoyed the first one, this one is supposed to have online multiplayer (which is what the first was missing), using the Wiimote should make things quicker, faster and easier in terms of control, which is awesome.
Super Smash Bros Brawl
Should be great, playing online with this will be fun.
Disaster Day of Crisis
Want to know more about this for sure, On my radar.
Heroes
Enjoyed Killer7, looks like it has a similar style, anothe one on the radar.
Sadness
Like the above 2, something I'm looking foward to knowing more about.
And these are only games that have been announced in some form
here are sure to be more in the future, a lot of games I'm interested in, some will probably not show up for a while though (Sadness for example).

You guys should give some reasons why you're looking forward to these games. Lists are lists are lists are lists. There isn't exactly a whole lot of choice with this console.
The one game I'm looking forward to is Zelda. I know how it plays for the most part, they've proven they have decent varied combat and clever puzzles, and the pacing and art are always top notch. I'm getting both versions, however I think the cube version will be better. The wii remote recognises motions that you perform, and converts them to actions on screen just like any other game, but with this controller the action that you perform is bigger than it needs to be. The marketing hype is that it's a motion sensing controller that replicates your actions and performs them onscreen, but there's actually very few games that correctly match your actions and register the speed, angle, and other subtle movements and accurately respond with equally varied animations. Games that demand higher skills from players tend to keep the inputs as simple as possible, making the controls transparent, but with the Wii the emphasis is on making you more aware of the controls and inputs and still giving the same kinds of response that we see on screen. For example when you push the nunchuck forward to stun the enemy, the stun is the important new gameplay feature that adds something to the experience. Pushing the nunchuck forward isn't the new experience or gameplay element that we should be talking about. This logic carries throughout almost every game that has been announced so far, and there are alternative controllers out there that are far more accurate and precise, and the software designed around simpler interfaces rewards you for better input with a whole range of meaningful gameplay elements. Basically the wiimote offers nothing new to those who truly appreciate gameplay, and once players realise the difference between new input and new gameplay I think many of them will be disappointed. This is more obvious to some people than others, I guess it depends on what type of games you're used to and what kinds of gameplay you are familiar with. Nintendo games typically offer nothing beyond a novice level of skill, because they've always wanted to keep their games open and accessible. Veteran gamers should have moved on by now and started playing games that allow you to increase your skill over a longer period of time.
Super Paper Mario and Fire Emblem also look alright, intelligent systems is one of the better developers out there these days. These are games that won't benefit from the wiiremote either and could have been released on cube, but oh well. The hype surrounding a supposed revolutionary motion sensing controller might be what Nintendo needs to sell systems and even get more 3rd party developers interested in the console.
Much like the DS there isn't really any choice as far as 3rd party games go. Nothing stands out at this stage as worth getting, even if a few of them are from franchises that are known for quality. Makes me wish Nintendo themselves would go 3rd party so that I'm not forced to buy a console just to play Nintendo games, but it's been that way for 2 generations now, and at least they're cheap consoles.
I know the controller works well and it does things that other controllers can't do, it's just that I've only seen this type of thing demoed in mimigames so far. When it has more going for it that actually benefits from the controls I'll start to think about picking one up. I'm not the kind of gamer who waits forever for great new games, I've got a tonne of awesome games already with more depth than anything the Wii is likely to have over it's entire life. I'd rather give the games I already own a lot more time than rush out and buy the latest thing with the Nintendo brand on it. To be honest I'd rather spend the money on official Nintendo keychains, wallets, and other crap that doesn't pretend to offer anything other than being the latest Nintendo branded piece of shit (not that I'm likely to buy that stuff, I'd just prefer to).
Play your games people. Don't get excited by marketing bullshit </rant>

You know UC1 when you finally play the Wii you're going to believe, "playing = believing" :P .
I'll post 'reasons' for why I'm looking foward to the games I mentioned later, I dont have the time right now, actually I'll edit my above post and provide a brief explanation for now, and maybe go in more depth later.
EDIT: provided some brief explanations, in many of them I'm not so much excited about the Wii controls potential but just the games themselves, it's what it should be about after all, at the same time I look foward to playing these games with the new controller, it does make them more exiciting, but at the end of the day these are just some awesome games :D
DJ-Civic - October 22, 2006 12:15 PM (GMT)
Stop being a sook, UC1. :P
While I was thinking just like you - the so-so selection of software and hype for the new type of gameplay - I've decided to give the console a chance and I'm gonna buy it at launch. Mainly for Zelda of course but I'm sure other games like Wario Ware, Mario Galaxy and possibly Red Steel might be good enough for me to invest in them.

what is Wii Play?
And I'm looking forward to these ones at launch, not sure if all of them are launch games, though, someone said ExciteTruck is not? And not sure whether Wario Ware will be launch either, and I don't really know much about Trauma Centre - I'll probably only get two of these at launch, max, anyway... Probably more like one...
Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
Rayman Raving Rabbids
Super Monkey Ball
Excite Truck
Wario Ware: Smooth Moves
Trauma Centre (maybe)
And of course after launch there's heaps that I'm looking forward to; Super Mario Galaxy tops the list, SSBB, can't think what else there is but there'll be heaps
Stevorooni - October 23, 2006 12:07 AM (GMT)
I'm only getting Zelda with my Wii at launch. It's the only game that's got me excited.
Excite Truck looks pretty cool but I'll wait for some reviews.
I'm not 100% sure of Red Steel, videos I've seen make the game look a little stiff.
BAH! I just want Zelda. Hurry up Nintendo

what is Wii Play?
|
Wii Play is a collection of mini games, it is known as "My first Wii" or "introduction to Wii" in Japan, it has been confirmed as a launch title in the UK, but not for the US. It has been assumed that Wii Play will be a launch title in Australia because it has been classified by the OFLC and is in the database of many retailers.
Anyway, the game itself isn't really that deep or engaging, I believe it is a collection of about 8 or so mini games all of which take advantage of the Wiimote, including billards, fishing, the shooting game, table tennis among others. Most of these games take advantage of the Mii avatars.
So while the game itself isn't that deep, it is supposed to retail for $80 and come with a Wiimote, the Wiimote by itself retails for $70, so the way I see it, if you are going to buy another Wiimote, you might as well get Wii Play for the extra 10 bucks.

Wii Play = Towiilet Training?
NismoR34 - October 23, 2006 05:33 PM (GMT)
^ That was lame. :P
I'm not looking forward to all that much on the Wii actually, my most anticipated game for the console won't be released until next year so yeah, I'm not too fussed at this current stage. If you are slow and you haven't figured it out yet, the game I am talking about is Metroid Prime 3. I'm a Metroid freak so I am excited about this game by default, but even so what I have seen so far looks like it will totally rock. The art direction is still there, the gameplay looks like it is still there plus it has a new control scheme to boot too. Not bad in my books then. Actually, on that, I think the Wiimote is perfect for a game like Metroid. The Wiimote will essentially be an extension of your right arm as you use it, and what does Samus have on her right arm...?
I dunno, it just seems like the game to use the Wiimote with personally.
Other than Metroid, I am looking forward to finally playing Zelda. It has been far too long so it will be great to finally go through a new Zelda game, something I haven't done since Wind Waker. (I missed Minish Cap)
Red Steel is now a title I am pumped about, it looks really awesome and I think I am really going to enjoy playing through it. Last but not least, Super Paper Mario has my (very) keen eye on it as I loved The Thousand-Year Door and so far it looks like I will love this one too.
Yep, that's it. Excite Truck looks like it will be fun but at the same time I'm not really fussed on it, not yet anyway.

HALO 3!!!!!!¬¬¬1!
Seriously though, Red Steel (swords!), SSBB, Zelda and Galaxy are my main reasons to get the Wii at the moment. SSBB is going to be unreal. I love the SSB series, and Galaxy looks like great fun. Itsa me Mario! Ahhh, can't wait for that.
Nags - October 24, 2006 12:46 AM (GMT)
Well, i just bought Twilight Princess, and im going to get Metroid 3 around Launch... then SSBB when it comes out.
Cubeoid - October 24, 2006 08:12 AM (GMT)
The only game that I know I'm getting at launch is Zelda. I'm going to wait for the reviews for Red Steel as it looks alright but as Stevorooni noted the game looks a bit "stiff" in the videos. It looks like it handles like 007 Nightfire or Perfect Dark Zero which is to say somewhat sluggish.
When they are finally released I will deffinitley be getting Metroid Prime 3 and SSBB. Metroid Prime and Melee were two of the best reasons to own a Gamecube so Corruption and Brawl should continue that tradition for the Wii.
Resident Evil: Unbrella Chronicles is another game that looks set to be a winner. Since buying the cube Resident Evil has quickly become one of my favourite gaming series.
I'm sort of interested in seeing how both Far Cry and COD3 handle on the Wii though I don't know if I'll get them.
Shadow Knight - October 24, 2006 08:36 AM (GMT)
Metroid Prime 3
Fire Emblem
Only two games i'm really looking forward to on the Wii, so i think i'll be getting mine around late 2007 or the inevitable price drop around then. I'll pick up other titles like Zelda too, but i'm not looking forward to it that mcuh that it's going to get me buying a Wii at launch.
EDIT: Plus, i made a deal with myself that the X360 would be the only console i'd buy on launch. For pretty much ever. :P

360-fy Call of Duty 3 my friend, if you have the TV for it.
Decman - October 24, 2006 09:10 PM (GMT)
I read an article about a few journos playing CoD3 on the Wii and 360. They said that the latter was amazing, with sexy bump mapping and dynamic lighting. Huge attention to detail too, and I can only imagine such visual orgasms on an HDTV. However, the same journo said that playing on the Wii was rather...disappointing. It didn't 'produce the vibrations' that he was obviously looking for. One comment sticks: "It felt last gen."
Who knows?
Cubeoid - October 25, 2006 02:46 AM (GMT)
Yeah well from what I've seen of the screen shots of the Wii version it doesn't look very graphically impressive. The only reason I'm interested is for the control scheme but I think I'll stick with the 360 version anyway. :P

| Summing up our day at war: the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of the game are graphically different from each other, but they both look and feel extremely similar to CoD2. The real difference is in the tweaks to the gameplay. The multiplayer on the 360 was leaps and bounds ahead of the last game, while the Wii really put the game in your hands with their controller. Which one is the best value? If you want multiplayer, you'll have to get the Xbox 360 or PS3 versions, because it won't be supported on the Wii. But if you want innovative gameplay, get the Wii and shake your hands in the air like you just don't care. |
DJ-Civic - October 26, 2006 02:29 PM (GMT)
Same name, different games imo just because of how the 360 and Wii versions will be played. I'll be going for the 360 version as multiplayer is where its at for me.
borgster101 - October 26, 2006 11:09 PM (GMT)
Apparantly the single player campaign in COD3 is identical on all three formats, which is interesting.
