Title: The official "website" thread.
Description: All about websites (creation, hosting..)

Inquisitor - May 7, 2004 12:05 PM (GMT)
I am going to be putting up a .com website sometime in the near future.

However, I need some prices.

I have heard that they can range anywhere from $30 - $150. Apparently if the host is overseas it is cheaper, but I'm not sure.

So I was just wondering if I could get alot of details about web hosting for a .com?

Thanks.

Getting your site hosted overseas definately does have the advantage of competitive pricing, so you'll usually see good deals everywhere. I don't have a host to recommend, but when you do find one, make sure to look up a bit of their history over google to be sure they're reliable for support and uptime.

Oh, and when I have to choose my server location, do I choose Australia or U.S.A? Because I don't want a .com.au if it's that... just a .com

i remeber a mod on the pcpp forums saying that he got a .com site for $8, can't remeber how though :(

Yeah, lately I've really wanted a website, but wasn't ever gonna make one unless I had something good to put on it. I finally thought of something, so now I'm also looking for .com costs.

So yeah, anyone who can help is now helping two people. :P

I can now help you Film Guru.

MyAcen is fairly good. I am going for the Homestead deal. Big range of prices.

LiveRegistry offers great prices for a domain. About $13.

And if I may ask Film Guru, what is your website on?

Film Guru - May 9, 2004 12:45 PM (GMT)
OUCH! Thanks a heap for the info, but that's way too expensive for my tastes...

The website was gonna be a comic website. Simply draw cartoons using profound metaphors (sp?) as it's basis. But I don't think it's worth investing in a .com address for that quite yet.

Besides, I suck at designing web pages. I should just put it on hold until a later date...

Inquisitor - May 10, 2004 05:34 AM (GMT)
Well to make sure that you don't have your website name stolen, register the domain (only $13 a year) so that no one else can use it.

EDIT: I've made this thread a website thread, for all your website needs! (creation, scripting etc)

Update on UltimaRPG: Going well, just did up all my buttons on the main page, and scripting is almost complete.

Actually I'm not bad at web design, my uncle, and my friends dad have enlisted me to make their sites for a small fee.

However my own site is in tatters because I am really not bothered to actually make everything work, but at least it has a countdown to the release of Halo 2 which updates itself... ^_^

Inquisitor - May 18, 2004 09:49 AM (GMT)
Lol. Yeah, same with me. I'm in a slump stage :P

Yay!

Spent a grand total of 1hr revamping my website and here is the result:

www.metallix.vze.com

And btw Film Guru, if you get serious enough about your comics website, I'd be more than happy to make a placeholder site, or a full one if you wanted me to.

Metallix: nice, although there seems to be a few problems with parts of your website loading.

I finally decided to make myself one, in flash no less, so the size will be a bit big, with the total size of the whole lot over 1MB.

Also content is a bit scarce at the moment.

If you are cheap and don't want to get a .com the next best option would probably be signing up to a free web hosting service like geocities or angelfire and then signing up to shortURL.com to shorten your URL.

Example

www.geocities.com/evolution

www.evolution.vze.com when using shortURL.

_Metallix_'s site uses it and did any of that make sense? :$

Cheers. If I were to decide to make it a reality, I would love to have markymark do the artwork on the comic strips. :)

However, as of right now I don't see enough people who would visit it regularly enough to make it worth my while...

Ghost Boy - July 14, 2004 08:48 AM (GMT)
Guru, don't you already have a free site setup that you never update? I want to see you get the Film Archive up and running regularly again!

Anyway, I'm bumping this thread because I would like info on some website hosting myself.

Prices & recommended hosts for a .com website would be much appreciated from those with the experience.

Cheers!
