Title: The "what's your newest purchase" thread
Description: Talk about what game you've just bought

Manny M - May 7, 2004 06:28 AM (GMT)
Hey.

Not sure if this is a good idea for a thread, but when I buy a game I know that I like to comment on my first impressions, and what I think of it.

To save a whole heap of threads springing up just to comment on a game you just purchased, I thought we could relay all that info here, especially when it's in regards to a purchase of an older game.

I've just purchased Panzer Dragoon Orta for a cool $50.

I've heard some good things about it from the majority of you people that have it, and was stoked that I got it at such a good price.

I'll play it tonight and let you know what I think, and whether I need to hunt down El Prez if it turns out to be crap.

..i've got too many games on my hands.

Shadow Knight - May 7, 2004 07:50 AM (GMT)
Well, i recently purchased Ubisoft Heroes Pack, which is great an absolute bargain btw. I'm enjoying the games alot but KotOR still has it's claws in me. ;)

Kid Wakelin - May 7, 2004 08:19 AM (GMT)
My latest acquisition is Splinter Cell: PT.

Btw, Manny M if you don't like PDO you can hunt me down too, as I love that game, just not as much as Prez.

CLL - May 7, 2004 09:01 AM (GMT)
I bought SC: PT and DX: IW at pretty much the same time. SC: PT is terrific, whilst DX: IW is not as good as the original, but I'm finding it's not as bad as I first thought. I'm amazed at the number of ways you can play out several tasks. One example was that I was asked to assassinate someone, but instead of doing so, I talked to this other guy who presented a counter-offer to kill someone else and earn more credits. It truly is one of those games, where replayability is required.

As for SC: PT, well I haven't got Live yet, but the SP alone has kept me more than satisfied.

Übermensch - May 7, 2004 12:53 PM (GMT)
My latest is Crimson Skies, which I bought for a measly 20 bucks from Xamerkapsy. Sweet, sweet game made even sweeter by the sweet, sweet price. Sweet!

darklord - May 7, 2004 02:11 PM (GMT)
lastest is PGR2...that was late last year and really i dont even care about any games coming out till september -_-"

Spag - May 7, 2004 02:25 PM (GMT)
I hated PDO and was astounded that someone could like it that much

I recently brought Blinx: The Timesweeper and it turned out to be an average platformer at best. <_<

Had a quick go of it last night, and I don't think i'll be hunting anyone down...awww

It's an unusual game, but that's what makes me like it. Pretty darn hard though.

Aww and mensch, great purchase. Crimson Skies is an awesome game.

Lordage - May 9, 2004 01:00 PM (GMT)
My most recent purchase was Amped 2, and I am quite impressed. It's not the greatest game I've ever played, but it is damn fun and packs in an awful lot to do for a snowboarding/extreme sports title.

Manny M - May 9, 2004 10:07 PM (GMT)
While playing Panzer Dragoon Orta the other day something dawned on me.

This is the game the Starfox sequel should've been, only it's much funkier than old Fox and slippy could ever be.

So, if any of you really liked Starfox 64, this is a definate purchase.

*digs up thread*

Well, I thought i'd bring this back, just to throw down some impressions of a game i've played lately, a game that defies wonder when it comes to overhype. That game, is DOA: Beach Volleyball.

If there's any excuse for big, bouncy, polygon funbags, this is it, and nothing more. I was so unimpressed when I played this game, that I just felt like snapping the disc in two.

I fail to see how people like this game. Despite the poor attempt at injecting fake sex appeal into a game, the actual gameplay is bloody ordinary. Sure, beach volleyball aint the most tactical game, but jeebus, I had more fun playing Lee Carvallo's Putting Challenge.

Tell me, and i'm mainly looking at Prez here, what you see in this game, and I aint talking big bouncy jumblies either.

ElPresidente - March 3, 2005 03:23 AM (GMT)
Because you are playing it like a game. It isn't a game, it is a toy. I know that sounds like a weak cop out but it is true.

I didn't 'get it' at first. In fact my first experiences with the game saw me return it to EB two days later. I was hoping for something great and I got nothing in return.

Then about 6 months later I was drunk in a video store after a bit of a day out on the town and there was nothing I wanted to rent. But in my drunken state I saw DOAXBV, thought "Mmmm tits" and rented it.

I sat in my stupor on the couch and played til about three in the morning, woke up and played again.

DOAXBV is the kind of game you play when you simply can't be farked being competetive. You just give into the basic fun of hunting down new swimsuits, playing poker, etc.

It is the perfect time wasting game. It just needs to be viewed in context.

I just purchased Jet Set Radio Future ex-rental and have played it for about an hour or so. It's definitely enjoyable and JSR has always screamed style. Even today it still has to be one of the finest looking titles on any of the current three systems. The game is damn funky and a joy to play, I'm quite pleased with my purchase.

ElPresidente - March 3, 2005 05:45 AM (GMT)
So you should be, that game got more hours of play in my first month of Xbox ownership than Halo did.

gg! I just got that little gem of a game on Tuesday from cash converters, mine is the JSRF/Sega GT 2002 disc that was in the massive pack, but to my delight, it was still all sealed up.

Looking forward to playing it some more on the Weekend.

I've got shit like puzzle bobble to act as the perfect time wasting game. DOA BV, however, is just crap.

Actually, it all kinda makes sense when you put it in that context, but crap is crap, regardless of how many pairs of fake tits you slap on it.

DJ-Civic - March 3, 2005 12:42 PM (GMT)
Harsh words from Manny there. I haven't played the game but did want to hire it to see for myself what all the fuss is about. Everyone I know who owns it simply bought it for the tits - plain and simple. I'm sure they used the "hands free" mode quite often...

Surashu - March 3, 2005 12:57 PM (GMT)
I bought Halo 2 for $39.99 Canadian, normally $59. Its an awsome shooter, I wish it had a 3rd person view though.

Funnily enough, I just wanted to see if it was a good game, because quirky sports titles are usually good to play. This, however, is just polygon tits, and it does nothing for me.

You've missed the point of what I said.

It isn't a game, Puzzle Bobble does not fulfill the same role as DOAXBV. It isn't something you play for competetiveness, or to get a high score. It is like TV you can interact with. It isn't for everyone but sometimes I just wanna play something and not worry about all the stuff like winning, etc. I just wanna kick back and interact with something DOAXBV does that for me.

kami - March 4, 2005 12:58 AM (GMT)
Although the thing I find amusing about DOA:XBV is that for a game where part of it is just watching the girls frolic around, the camera system is pretty unsuited to the job. Though once I got the Venus swimsuit, I kind of lost just about all motivation to play the game.

-----------------------------------

As for the game I just recently got - I picked up Mace Griffin Bounty Hunter for $20 at Target. They also had Battlestar Galactica for $30, but they seemed to be out of copies. I skipped MGBH previously since it seemed like a rather meh-ish title. Still, for $20 it's quite enjoyable. And in retrospect, I'm perhaps a little glad I didn't get BG instead, since when playing the flying sections of MGBH I remembered how bad I am at flying games.

I don't see myself getting any other games in the near future. There are certainly some appealing titles, but not really ones I absultely must have.

jawbreaker982 - March 8, 2005 06:40 AM (GMT)
Well, I just replaced my Xbox on Sunday (had to buy a new one) and I picked up ESPN NBA 2K5, Top Spin and Halo (again, but it was part of the deal). Next on the list is Deus Ex 2 and Playboy Mansion.

:)

f15active - March 8, 2005 10:19 AM (GMT)
Actually, it makes me think, the last game I got was halo 2.

Manny M - March 10, 2005 08:47 PM (GMT)
Ooh, had a go at Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath, last night. Now that's a deliciously quirky game.

You basically play the game as Stranger, a bounty hunter who's all about catching crims, and claiming bounties, complete with clint eastwood-esque voice. You can switch between 3rd and first person modes, 3rd person mode used to get around the map, while first person mode is mainly used when hunting down enemies with your weapons. The great part about this game, is your weapon. It's basically a crossbow, but this crossbow is like no other. This crossbow can be loaded with critters you find on the journey towards your bounty, with each different critter performing a different function. One critter (a squirrel who throws wise cracks while loaded), can be used to lure out enemies, so you can pick them off one by one. Another critter can be used to ensnare enemies, and so on. It provides great variety, and is alot of fun.

ElPresidente - March 11, 2005 08:51 AM (GMT)
Looking forward to jumping in to that one. Picked up a copy today along with GT4 (plus Pro wheel) and Project Rub. It is the only one I've not played yet but I had Eliot Fish gloating about playing it last week (Prick did the same thing with GTA:SA two weeks prior to launch :P) and he is in love with it, Manny seems to be in love with it... I see no reason why I would be any different.

~DC - March 11, 2005 08:54 AM (GMT)
Looks to be a big improvement on the slightly disappointing Munch's Oddysee. Just a shame it came out on such a massive month for games across all consoles... :(

KickyFunkFresh - March 11, 2005 09:04 AM (GMT)
I want it, but can't afford it. GIVE ME MORE HOURS AT WORK DAMMIT!!!!

ElPresidente - March 11, 2005 09:38 AM (GMT)
Good thing you only said 'slightly' there DC. :P

Personally I think Munch is unfairly criticised.. though I will admit it really only begins to hit its stride in the final half of the game.

Manny M - March 11, 2005 01:21 PM (GMT)
I think that once/if I finish stranger's wrath, i'm going to hunt me down munch's oddysey. I just love the kooky oddworld environment.

ElPresidente - March 11, 2005 08:38 PM (GMT)
Well I sat down and had a good play of Stranger last night and Manny is right, it is excellent. Just a very well designed shooter/platformer. I love it.

ElPresidente - March 12, 2005 09:54 AM (GMT)
The more I play, the more I love.

This game is phenominal!!!!

Everyone who has become sick of the norm in the FPS genre should race out and get this game NOW!

ultracrazy1 - March 12, 2005 05:38 PM (GMT)
Everyone may have made up their mind about DOAX by now but I may as well say why I got it.

A website known as "highervoltage" used to be around, it was dedicated only to fighting games. They still have a forum, but they used to have news and reviews, and one review in particular caught my attention (well stomp pointed it out to me).

It was a 6 page "joke review" about how good DOAX is, and the final score was something like 369% poking fun at how people never score 100%, even if they really like a game.

Basically, this is a series that many people are attached to, and it answers the question of "what else to these freaks do besides kill each other?" It may not be a series you are attatched to, so I'll put it in perspective for you:

Say you really really love soul calibur (which isn't hard to do). So they make a gambling game where you can select you female character, take your daily allowance and go to the casino to play some of the most beautifully rendered casino images you've seen in a game. Now theres plenty of gambling in videogames, but DOAX has all the big games, they're dead challenging, and the casino is more beautiful than any I've seen yet.

So you win big in the casino, but what do you spend your money on? Well, why the hell not have a bunch of unlockable costumes and accessories for you character. Any what they've done to make it a little more interesting, is throw in a kooky dating game so that you can receive rare gifts, and dress up 2 girls at once. Also you get to play around with the relationships that are implyed by the history of the series.

Now soul calibur has an exhibition theatre to view moves and costumes and weapons, and that is how I view the cut scenes and volleyball. It isn't a volleyball game per se, its a very original, very unique blend of gameplay styles where ultimately the goal is to have fun. Fighting games are VERY VERY competitive. More competitive than any other style imo. And you need a break every now and then, and maybe the characters do too. What do you do when you go out for a break? Casino, dating, sharing gifts, going to the beach, playing sports - it works in a weird way, and meanwhile you keep in touch with your favourite hardcore female fighting characters. Theres fun and familiarity.

I play it now and then because I like gambling, and all the other games I have with elements of gambling are not as well realised as this. Shenmue 2 and Golden Sun 2 come to mind as games where you can spend hours just gambling (and in shenmue 2 if you get good at it, or save after a win, reset after you lose ;) then you won't have to work will you?)
You don't have to play volleyball anyway. If you like gambling and hate the volleyball then just play the basic pool hopping game, and in less than 5 minutes you'll have around (Z$)20000 and you'll be back in the casino. If you then get a nice outfit with your money, maybe you'll want to play some volleyball on the beach in that outfit.

Doesn't it just OOZE character!

I love the way he moves around, and starts almost galloping across the level in complete fluidity.

I am waiting for more cutscenes though, as the first one was simply superb.

How far in are you?

There are plenty more to come.

I'm currently on in Buzzerton hunting down Jo Momma

Damn I love the outlaw names. :D

The more you play this game the more you find to love. Simply astounding.

I didnt buy them, but i rented 2 games, Deathrow and DOA 3, they both kick total ass.

Yeah, just got to buzzerton too, and had a nice laugh at the 'Jo Momma name for that outlaw. Hehe.

Once again, the FMV cutscenes are fan-bloody-tastic!

What's this Deathrow game you refer to Elpres? I've never heard of it...

I have read Hyper's review, Edge's review and the impressions in this thread and I must say that Stranger's Wrath is looking very enticing. I already have a whole bunch of unplayed games but I can never resist a highly acclaimed title either. Pres, I think I know the answer but should I go for it? ;)

V8 Supercars 2.

I recently bought this (along with a whole bunch of other games) and while it isn't the best racer around it was definitely fun.
The graphics are pretty good, the cars look quite stunning (they really captured the liveries of the V8's, that's for sure) and the tracks themselves are quite nice too. Aurally the game is pretty realistic. The cars sound like the V8's, and it kinda sounds like you are watching channel 10's broadcast when you watch a replay of a race.

Gameplay is definitely awesome though. The handling is pretty good, and when you are racing the 19 other V8's around the 10 tracks, it definitely feels like you are in a V8 race. Gran Turismo could certainly use Codemasters' awesome AI cars. Sure they spin off and crash sometimes, in the weirdest of places too but in general they actually race. It's exhilirating at times too, which surprised me.

Track selection is great, with the key tracks all being there. Sucks that some tracks were missing but when the game is supposed to be suited for worldwide audiences, I can forgive it. One problem I have though, which isn't Codemasters' fault is the fact that I will never see the Canberra track in a video game again. Obviously it is because the race was cancelled here, but I thought the track was a good one and it would be great in various games. Include it as a tribute or something Codies!

Overall the game was short but sweet and I quite enjoyed it. The story was much better than Ryan McKane's but it still lacked something. Bring on V8 Supercars 3 then.

What a shame a game purely for V8 Supercars hasn't been released...
