Title: The Official Phoenix Wright Trilogy Thread
Description: All 3 games discussed here!

borgster101 - July 19, 2006 06:57 AM (GMT)
I just got the UK version of this game from DVDCrave, and seriously guys get this game while you can! This is a rare gem of a title that is a lot of fun :D

I've gone through the first episode (there are five) and this first one sort of acts as a tutorial, the following episodes are a lot longer (apparently the last is longer the first 4 put together). The first episode is only the court segment of the game, where you have to discover the contradictions in the witness testimony by analysing the evidence against the accounts of the witness, the first episode keeps things pretty simple.

In future episodes the game becomes more involved as I have found on starting the second episode where you must first examine the scene of the crime to gather evidence for the upcoming trial. It works in a point and click (or touch) style.

There is a lot of dialogue and you have to pay attention but the writing is so brilliant that it isnt tiresome as everything is so entertaining, and quite amusing when you point out contradictions to the witness. Also yelling "OBJECTION" and "TAKE THAT" into the DS microphone is a lot of fun  .

An excellent game, its a shame that it will probably not get a local release (from the looks of it) but dont let this stop you from enjoying this great piece of software, think of a court drama TV show and this is basically how this game works, only the characters are more amusing and of course it's interactive and more involving than what a TV show would be.

Seriously get this game now!!!

I'm guessing it's out in America? Sounds pretty interesting, and fun. :P

Bad thing is..It's 3:11AM,And the only store that sells DS games near me that is open would be Wal-Mart,But i don't want to waste the trip this late to see if it is out or not. <_<

I'll definatly look into it in a day or so. Heh,if you hadn't posted this,I probably would've never known about this game.Sad i know...

borgster101 - July 19, 2006 09:05 AM (GMT)
Yeah it would be out in the US, though I've heard it is hard to find, I imagine you'll find it somewhere though I guess.

NismoR34 - July 19, 2006 06:29 PM (GMT)
DS games are region free, aren't they? If the answer is yes then you could just import the game from the UK like DVDCrave (an Aussie site) are doing. Lik-Sang or Play-Asia will probably have copies of the game.

As for the game itself, it's always been a title that I have wanted. There's so many out there actually but we won't go into that. I do plan on getting this game sometime in the near future but alas, I've got other things to get first such as the 360. (I spent enough on the Lite already, I think ;))

borgster101 - July 19, 2006 11:17 PM (GMT)
Yeah DS games are region free, and Phoenix Wright in particular is quite rare, speaking of which I'll have to go play it again :)

Electronic Junky - July 20, 2006 04:26 AM (GMT)
Well i've checked Wal-Mart,And no signs of this game. :argh:

...Looks like i'll have to hit a different city one day, either way i will find it.

borgster101 - July 20, 2006 04:51 AM (GMT)
Good luck in finding it dude :)

So I'm going through episode 2 now, man this game is fun, :D

extremisjae - July 20, 2006 11:02 AM (GMT)
borg - i finished ep 3 and I have to agree this is a great game! haven't had a chance ot pick it up since (too many other DS titles!), for a point a click investigation game its quite fun, especially when u see the faces witnesses make when you find a contradiction in their statements!

 yeah they are very amusing. I seem to be wrapping the case up now in episode 2, but then my DS Lite starting flashing red, and I realised the battery is going low, and with the Lite you dont have much time before it cuts off, so I decided to save and quit then since it was time to eat dinner anyway.

And yeah you're right, I actually didnt know exactly what to expect from this point and click style adventure but now after playing it, I understand why it was hyped as being so fun :)

/backslash - September 22, 2006 02:36 PM (GMT)
Okay, well for those of you who are unaware that Phoenix Wright 2 will soon be released (26th October for the jap version that includes english language version) and the US release, 7th January or something like that (I've forgotten). Capcom have now released new screenshots of Phoenix Wright 4 (I think the 3rd game will be released after the 4th, or they might be tied in)

Straight away, you can see the immediate difference compared to the early chapters in the original game with more detailed backgrounds and characters. The main reason being since these games were actually made for the GBA in 2001 for japan release only

-------------

Anyway, I'm coming up to the end of the 3rd chapter (I think I'm only up to the 3rd chapter with the Steel Samurai) and still thorougly enjoying it. For a joke I decided to select the option that said "There was no victim!" which goes into a nearly probable extended result despite Edgeworth and the Judge proclaiming I've lost my mind! Whilst some people think the game is too short, I on the other hand, object (with a "Hold It!"). I've been playing this for at least an hour a day and I've had it for nearly 2 weeks now. Any game that can last this long gets my seal of approval when compared to a YouTube video that Mario 64 can be beaten in 79 minutes! (includes collecting 70 stars + game ending), click the long bolded thingy where I'm typing this. Though I doubt anyone would be able to do that on their first attempt :P

borgster101 - September 22, 2006 10:50 PM (GMT)
Yeah its a pretty lenghty game, I was impressed :D

Phoenix Wright 4 is looking good, it will likely be a full game full of chapters like the final one in the first game, which would be damn awesome :D You'll see what I mean when you get to the final chapter slashy.

Nags - September 27, 2006 08:50 PM (GMT)
Im really excited for the second game, and ive been looking all over the place for Pheonix Wright. Gamespot says that one of the stores around me has it. I better run!

And where did you hear about the 3rd and 4th one, i would really like to look into that

A bit of research always helps ;) I knew about the 3rd and 4th one before I supplied the screenshots in my post above but that's because I was searching for other info about fan translations for the game when I stumbled upon it

The lasted game in the series, Gyakuten Saiban 4, is slated for a release in Japan Q4 2006. It is said to feature similar gameplay, but the story will take place 7 years in the future, and feature new protagonist Housuke Odoroki. Being the first GS game developed specifically for the NDS, the game will also feature extra features such as fingerprinting, 3D evidence manipulation, and 3D modeled crime scenes.

So far, these characters are confirmed:

Housuke Odoroki: Defense Attorney and new protagonist.
Minuki-chan: Odoroki's sidekick and a "mysterious magician."
A witness: A short person with a hat and carrying a tray...?
The Judge: The original Judge from the GS series is in several screenshots.
Winston Payne: The Rookie Killer himself is back with a new suit and a fabulous mullet.

In a recent interview with 1up.com producer Matsukawa intimated that their localization team was playing aorund with coming up with an English name for Odoroki, suggesting Capcom does intend an American release for GS4. Whether the Japanese release of GS4 will feature a dual language option has yet to be announced.

Creator Takumi and producer Matsukawa also held an interview with Famitsu magazine on the subject of GS4. You can download scans here:

Famitsu article: Page 1...2...3...4...5

Other than the interview itself, several things in this article are worth noting in the screenshots:

-The Judge and Winston Payne are back.

-The description of Odoroki's lawyer badge is as follows: "My treasured badge. Just wearing it makes my chest tighten up."

-In one screenshot Odoroki is thinking, "Should ask sensei about what testimonies are?" This indicates there may be some kind of avoidable tutorial mode, and also that Odoroki has a mentor figure with him. Who that might be hasn't been said yet.

Here's a translated snippit from the article:

Interviewer. What kind of person is Odoroki?
Taku: A hot blooded, mischievous, lively young man.

Interviewer. What's that bracelet on his left arm?
Taku: That was added because it looked kind of bare when he would yell "OBJECTION!" But it looks like it should have some kind of meaning, and several people have asked, "What's that for?" So now we're trying to think of a reason for it."

Interviewer: Oh man (laughs). I really thought it meant something! ...Can you tell us the truth?

Matsu: When you see the logo you'll understand. Aside from it sparkling, I think it [the bracelet] will become symbolic of GS4.

Taku: I hope everyone doesn't think about it too much. If too many people think things up, someone will end up being right (laughs).

Interviewer: Was it hard to come up with a new main character from scratch?

Taku: "It was a real struggle. Everyone I came up with would end up like Naruhodou no matter what I did. I made Naruhodou talk mostly like I do, so I muddled through it a lot this time. Furthermore, Odoroki uses "ore" instead of "boku." I really had to put the old characters out of my head.

["ore" and "boku" are both Japanese words for "me". But "ore" is more masculine and, for lack of a better description, more bold and confident than the more polite and neutral "boku".]

Interviewer. What role will Minuki-chan play?
Taku: Same as Mayoi.

Interviewer. Why is she a magician?
Taku: Felt like it... (laughs). She almost ended up a tradesman's daughter who sees everything in terms of money. Like "This testimony is worth 350 yen!" or something (laughs). [aka, that's not how she is, that's how she would have been, if she weren't a magician]

Interviewer. What's her personality like?
Taku: She's a precocious young girl, the kind that stands up on her toes to get at you (laughs)

Interviewer. And the name Minuki?
Taku: I wanted it to be an unusual name. But I hear people wonder about the "nu".
Matsu: "Nu" doesn't sound right in a girl's name (laughs)

Interviewer. How did you come up with Odoroki's name?

Taku: For Naruhodou-kun, I really like the phrase "naruhodo," so when coming up with names in the old game it came to me easily. I really like mystery novels, and in mysteries the "Oh, I see" feeling comes up often. When thinking of a name for the new protagonist, I thought that "surprise" was another word that came up often in mystery stories. So when I said "How about Odoroki-kun?" to the team, it seemed to fit the best. Though I did think of a few more.

Matsu: There was also Ikinari-kun.

[ikinari means "all of a sudden"]

Takumi: It sounds like a newspaper comic strip (laughs)

Matsu: The feeling is that if not for Odoroki-kun, he would have been Ikinari-kun.

Takumi: But we couldn't find good kanji for it.

Matsu: That's true. It was difficult. But when we came up with "Housuke" for his first name, everyone said, "Well, that's all right, then." The design was the same way. The Odoroki the main designer came up with, and the Odoroki that Takumi had been thinking up fit very well together from the start.

Takumi: That's right. But though we were able to come up with the name Odoroki-kun pretty easily, finding Kanji for it was really hard. What do you think...?

Matsu: I don't like the "mud" (laughs). It's really bothered me. But when we asked the team, they thought it would be all right if we sandwiched it between "king" and "happiness."

Takumi: There wasn't anything else. We even said if the game really doesn't work out, we can change "king" to "dirty."

[The three kanji that make up "odoroki" are King, Mud, and Happiness.]
There was also a rumor circulating on the Japanese site 2chan, supposedly leaked by a Capcom employee. It hasn't been confirmed, so this should only be taken with a grain of salt.

I've been waiting for this to come out in Australia for ages, but like you said, it doesn't seem like it. With all of you raving on about it I might have to take some money from my Wii savings to buy it.

Go for it mate :D DVDCrave currently have some copies in stock, it doesnt look like it will ever release over here, which is a shame, some of the best games on DS aren't even released locally, somethings wrong with that :(

Honestly, I had a lot of fun with this game :D

Nags - October 6, 2006 03:48 AM (GMT)
i actually just found a copy over here, im at the 4th chapter and i absolutly love this game

borgster101 - October 6, 2006 05:11 AM (GMT)
Thats awesome Nags, enjoy it

After reading through this thread i'm totally buying this as my next game purchase. The premise sounds so fun, does it get too difficult at any stage??

Well the main thing is, is to just look for clues, see false statements and press the witness to tell the truth. It's not overly hard and you can save the game at anytime. During court sessions you're allowed to make 5 mistakes, once those are gone you'll have a 'Game Over' screen and will have to load again. After each chapter you'll be asked to save so rarely will you have to replay much.

For those very rare moments you do get completely stuck, just resort to GameFAQ

borgster101 - November 3, 2006 08:01 PM (GMT)
There are times when you may get stuck, because the contradiction / false statement isn't so obvious, but it's satisfying when you eventually solve it :)

My bro found this game, at a toys R' us. I didn't really think it would be fun, till I myself tried it out.

I got my copy of Justice for All today, and I'll give it play through shortly, so I thought I'd bump and change this thread for discussion of all things Phoenix Wright.

Though looking at the packaging for Justice for All, the words "Ace Attorney" are large, it seems Capcom is directing the series of games to be the Ace Attorney series rather than the Phoenix Wright series, since in the 4th game (first one fully for the ground up for DS) you dont actually play as Phoenix Wright.

Anyway, time to play some Justice for All :D I'll post some impressions later.

borgster101 - February 2, 2007 12:26 PM (GMT)
*Bump* :whistling:

So I've played through a fair bit of Justice for All now, and essentially if you have played the first and enjoyed it, you will love what you get here, it's basically more of the same, with the only new feature being psyche locks, which basically allows Phoenix to see when someone is lying and you'll have to "unlock" the truth using evidence and your wits ;)

The game has a fair bit of references to the first game, so I'd recommend playing the first game before the second, (the first has more cases as well so its better value).

Justice for All is again hilarious, some awesome references to the gaming industry general pop culture and the like with many "in jokes", I dont want to spoil any of them, it's all good stuff.

The cases themselves are also full of twists and turns, the first case is more of a tutorial (it gets you back into the swing of things) but the ones after that really get into some depth, its what you would expect from Phoenix Wright, and Mr. Wright himself makes many thoughts to himself that are some of the most funniest moments.

For the Aussies out there, the first game will finally get a local release in March, so if you haven’t already picked up a copy do so at the local release

I received this game yesterday, haven't played it much but ala borgster I will post impressions later. Seems to be more of the same but as the old saying goes "If it aint broken, don't fix it" :D

Drake - February 7, 2007 03:26 AM (GMT)
So far im not enjoying it as much as the original but i know by the end ill be completely satisfied :)

borgster101 - February 7, 2007 04:00 AM (GMT)
I'm on the last case in Justice for All, and holy crap this case is awesome!! So many twists and turns, and it is so long as well :D Brilliant stuff!

Ali G - March 31, 2007 08:23 AM (GMT)
Just got the first game today. I've just finished the first court scene in the second case, and damn, this game is fantastic.

EDIT: Just finished the second case. Bring on the next case!

Ali G - April 2, 2007 01:11 PM (GMT)
Just finished the first day of court in the 4th case. It looks like a good case.

Drake - April 5, 2007 04:21 AM (GMT)
With Ema returning for Ace Attorney 4, it's going to make Phoenix's absence even more strongly felt. Argh, I wish they weren't switching characters.

You're not one for change are you? Resident Evil, Phoenix Wright ... :P

On that note apparantly Mr. Wright is still in the 4th game, only in a different role ;)

Ali G - April 5, 2007 05:47 AM (GMT)
Well, I'm up to the last case in the first game. The 4th case was absolutely fantastic, and *SPOILERS* to be able catch Von Karma was awesome.

borgster101 - April 5, 2007 01:09 PM (GMT)
Yeah that was an awesome moment in the 4th case :D

Ali G - April 6, 2007 06:05 AM (GMT)
Is it just me or is Case 5 a bit more ridiculous with what evidence you have to present? I mean, in the first four cases it was all pretty obvious what you had to present (if you paid attention), but in this case it's all a bit random.

borgster101 - April 6, 2007 06:59 AM (GMT)
Yeah the fifth case is a bit more abstract in that way, I cant remember now the exact types of evidence you had to present, but I remember it was a long case, and you get to do some neat investigation stuff that is more DS specific :D
