Title: Sony E3 Press Conference

thebigm - May 3, 2006 08:40 AM (GMT)
LIVE UPDATES Sony's E3 press conference is underway now, many people are gearing up for the onslaught of new information about the PS3. Expected to be announced are the PS3's price and the re-designed controller.

Unfortantly the press conference had been delayed and is now currently underway, updates will be posted as the conference continues.

Here is a quick rundown of what has been announced at Sony's E3 press conference as it happened.

Games shown for PSP; Ape Academy 2, Planet PSP (Interactive travel guide), Killzone: Liberation, B-Boy (Hip-Hop dancing), LocoRoco, Gangs of London, Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror (already out), World Tour Soccer 2, Talkman, Gangs of London.

Sony claims "Playstation influences the world", PS3 will change the world with included hard drive, "true HD graphics" and Dolby Surround sound.

All Playstation games promised to be compatible with the PS3 as well as DVD and any other media used by PS systems. PSP will also be connectable to the PS3.

Sony emphasis space is important (BluRay) every PS3 will ship with a hard drive. Console is still set for a November "worldwide" launch. PS3 WILL be playable at E3, some will be on near final dev kits.

Gran Turismo HD shown. Said to be running in 1080p! Selection of vehicles shown, including bikes and scooters, gameplay shown looks like GT4 in high defenition, new content seems to be lacking. Hard disc will be used to optimise load times. As with last years conference, Sony is emphasising the importance of HD gaming, shows a comparison screen shot with GT1 and GT4 at regular resolutions. The difference is amazing no doubt. It is said GTHD is planned to be release close to the console launch.

Creator of Eye Toy Richard Marx hits the stage, shows off Eye of Judgment, you move your hands to move cards, in some sort of card battle game.

Network stategy discussions commence; account manager, ranking systems, voice rankings and more, apart of the basic service which is free of charge. PS1 downlodable games to memory stick playable on PSP, Ridge Racer 1 shown on PSP. Variety of payment systems planned for the network features.

PS3 user interface is shown, e-distribution features shown off.

Singstar PS3 up next, hundreds of songs are possible thanks to BluRay, as well as videos. Loadtimes are very fast, an online catalog of songs is availble which can be downloaded. Similar to Xbox Live, PS3 will allow gamers to download additional content for games (for a price) such as new levels, characters and the like.

Genji 2, horseback, sea battles and others, battle through hundreds of enemies. Unique boss battles promised, an example is a crab monster where you have to flip it over to attack it.

Formula One PS3 up next. Utilises PSP in a GCN/GBA connectivity like approch, whereby the PSP is used as a wing mirror to see who is behind you whilst playing the main game on the PS3.

Heavenly Sword, tons of enemies in crowd, great details, smooth framerates, impressive display. Game will playable on the E3 show floor. Crowd goes wild for the first time at the conference, lead character uses a disk to slice up enemies.

Video now plays of games that were not ready for demos in real time. Games shown include
Lair; ride a dragon and battle other dragons
The Getaway
African Safari game; incredible realistic graphics, gameplay unknown?
Hot Shots Golf, higher res than PS2 game.
Monster Kingdom; fantasy horror.

Phil, discusses two "world premier" games

The first comes from the car blowing up at the petrol station demo from last years E3, seems to be some sort of action shooter game with lots going on.

Second game is from Naughy Dog; amazing looking forest (not known if its real time) some realistic character appears and starts shooting, fighting etc. No title for the game?

Resistance: Fall of Man shown; game is set in an alternative world, where the second world war never happened and instead the worst thing to happen to mankind was an alien invasion. Gameplay looks like COD, with lots of explosions and bodies flying. Game looks like a pretty standard next gen shooter, but the level of chaos in the game is huge. Multiplayer mode announced with 32 player online!

Third Party video reel shown, games include:
Assassin's Creed
Gundam
Coded Arms Assault
Ridge Racer 7
Brothers In Arms: Hell's Highway
Tekken 6 (not E3 2005 quality)
Sonic (looks like Sonic Adventure)
Virtua Tennis 3
Virtua Fighter 5
John Woo Presents Stranglehold
Fatal Inertia
Bladestorm (from Koei)
Armored Core 4

EA Games showcase (PS2 v.s. PS3 comparisons)
NBA Live 07 (looks amazing, they insist it's real time)
Tiger Woods (played with PS2 controller?)
EA have 10 games in the works for PS3, including Army of Two, Madden 07, Tiger Woods and Fight Night. Madden PS3 will be playable at E3.

EA demo for 2007 showcasing Madden, NBA Live, Tiger Woods, Need for Speed Carbon, Army of Two, Medal of Honor Airborne (which is looking f*cking awesome)

Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy XIII Versus everything shown but the 'train' is in real time.

Metal Gear Solid 4 (crowd goes crazy). Realtime footage of a warzone is shown. gigantic mechs walking around with futristic trucks and copters, enemy numbers are amazing, lighting effects fantastic! Snake appears, looks depressed watching the war around him, Ninja appears and slices up a mech! Metal Gear Solid favouties Naomi Hunter, Roy Campbell, Meryl, Otacon, and Liquid Snake / Ocelot are shown. Theme of the trailer was emotinal rather than action. Snake now looks even older than he did in the TGS trailer, with a beard and wrinkles everywhere and gray hair. The trailer ends at a climax with Snake swallowing his own gun, with the wait to 2007 teased.

Kuturagi shows the PS3 controller, and the PS3 controller. Which looks the same? Controller has a new function, "6 degrees" of motion-sensing movement (what will Nintendo say about this?) You can move it up and down, you have pitch and yaw and roll movement, and it's all still wireless.

Phil Harrison shows Warhawk for PS3, played live using a PS3 controller. He moves the controller like a flight stick, zooming and flying and turning and steering and going completely crazy, doing barrel rolls and quick turns and all kinds of moves.

PS3 controller, while clearly inspired by the Wii controller, it seems that it is not as accurate nor as precise as the Wii will be, though it clearly uses the same sort of ideas. Nintendo's conference got a lot more interesting.

The Sony conference is currently underway, PS3 seems to be headlining most of it, talk of HD, Sony claiming 1080p, will be interesting to see how the playable titles compare to the claims.

Suprise announcement, PS3 controller has a motion sensing like the Wii! It'll be interesting to see what Nintendo says tonight/tomorrow.

I was under the impression that we would see a redesign in the PS3 controller, not a rip off of the Wii remote. Still, it’s going to be awesome to see the reaction from both Nintendo and it’s fan(boy)s.

Killzone PSP! That could be awesome. :)
