Title: Dual Layer DVD Writers
Description: They're Here!
Manny M - May 5, 2004 02:43 AM (GMT)
Sony is the first company to release a Dual Layer DVD burner.
Dual Layer Discs aren't available as of yet, but Sony claims they will be shortly.
What does this mean for us? The ability to burn twice as much data onto the one side of a DVD than usual.
Check it out
Here.

$350 Ain't a bad price for that. But what are the disks going to cost?

I don't have much need for a Dual-Layer burner, but it's good that it's out, so that the price will continually drop until I'm ready to get one.
As for the discs, they'll be expensive at first, but I think as they start to mass-produce them, they'll drop in price pretty quickly.

Coolies, but for now I'll stick with my Ricoh DVD burner that I got for $99.
I wonder if DVD rot will be an issue, although you would think that they would have new technology like this figured out.

Oooh sweet news.
I'll be picking a dvd burner up, probably not soon though.
Tough choice, Dual Layers are a bit expensive at the moment. I'm more looking at this quality cheap alternative to dual layer.

i got a pioneer dvd burner recently for $150. yet to use it though as i'm having trouble trying to burn dvds through my current program. i'm trying to make a dvd that has *.avi files on it that can be played on any standalone dvd player. unfortunately, Cyberlink's PowerProducer keeps saying "drive or disc is not ready". i know my burner is compatible and i've downloaded all the latest patches but it still comes up with the same message
i think it's because they're avi files, and to be used as a vcd/svcd/dvd, they need to be converted into mpegs. but the program i'm using takes forever to convert. converting 4 gigs of files is not an easy chore since it takes a couple of hours just to do 200mb *sighs* my system's only 1.2gigs so that's another reason for the slow process
i don't think i'd have much use for dual layer dvds. sure it'll be cool to have one but i don't see it as an necessity

This will be nice, will only need 3 or 4 discs to make a proper back up of my HDD.

It's a right bitch to convert avi files to a VCD or SVCD, and they expand in size dramatically.
I never got to converting the avi files i had to VCD or SVCD.....if anyone remembers the thread I posted in the Hyper forums..you'll remember why. :D
But I do know that it takes absolutely ages.

know any shareware programs that convert it to mpegs - ones that don't try to resize the original resolution? i'm trying to convert a 640x480 avi file but the program AVI to VCD/SVCD/DVD Convertor 1.28 will only convert it to 352x288 (VCD), 480x576 (SVCD) and 720x526 (DVD). i wish to avoid the DVD types as it's 600mb just for 20minutes

I am still not sure how much the media will fall on these actually. It will be interesting to see the reliability and also how they are received.
Usually it's a case of more storage...it will be loved (for the new mainstream type developments) but I will want to see how this plays out.
I have had a dvdr for a fair while now and obviously I am going to see how they go before I go and purchase one. Still, I hope they are popular so I can have even less dvdrs lying around the place

I used to do a fair bit of movie burning myself (mostly VCD formats), but i've not bothered with it for about a year now. There used to be a great program for this that i used to use all the time, but i can't seem to find it over any google search. I found an alternative in the process though:
http://www.winmpg.com/download.htmlNot sure how reliable it is though.

Use TMPG to convert to MPEG2-DVD FORMAT then use vobedit to author then use nero to burn.
