Title: Commonwealth Games
Squato - March 15, 2006 10:03 AM (GMT)
Well the games have started. What are peoples views on it?
_MetalliX_ - March 15, 2006 10:05 AM (GMT)
I think its some conspriacy by Australia to exclude the more skilled countries from competing so we have a better chance of taking out most of the medals.
Squato - March 15, 2006 10:13 AM (GMT)
What, the ones that wanted out of the Empire?
But I like what The Chaser did. "Come on, lets beat Somoa."
_MetalliX_ - March 15, 2006 10:20 AM (GMT)
Isle of Man?? Jersey?? Where are these places!?!?!?!
borgster101 - March 15, 2006 10:23 AM (GMT)
I overheard this chick at uni saying "why is everyone making a big fuss about the Commonwealth games?" And then she says "Oh is it in Melbourne? ...... Oooohhhhh soo that's why everyone is making a big deal about it.
As for the my opinion on the games, well I'm not really going to be watching it, don't really care for the events that much.
Anyone get the Fox Sports Active Games coverage, with the 7 dedicated channels, I have seen that commercial so many times that's all I think about when I'm reminded about the games.

In all honesty, they should have packed it in after '82. :P
Lynx - March 15, 2006 12:41 PM (GMT)
You know that kid who flew around on the skateboard, carried the duck, etc? That was my cousin.
Top secret behind the scenes pic of a recent family gathering:

Pretend you care.
BrotherEstapol - March 15, 2006 01:42 PM (GMT)
Haha, that's pretty cool Moggsy.
Does that mean he's like the Male version of Nikki Webster?
I can smell a hit single in the works!
NismoR34 - March 15, 2006 05:24 PM (GMT)
Please, no. ;)
Yeah to be honest I don't really care for the games. I'll keep an ear out for how we fare via the various news bulletins but that's it. Considering the other two channels are taking off their big shows while the games are on, it just means more gaming time for me. (or whatever else)
Texta - March 16, 2006 12:19 AM (GMT)
Yeah, I don't really care. Especially with the Aussie v South Africa test starting tonight. Fuck I was glad I watched the second innings in the ODI Final (that's the one where Australia scored a world record 434 and South Africa won) it was mad. Though I definitely wouldn't have called it the greatest ODI of all time (let's be honest, the way they were scoring it was a bit like watching basketball).

With an FHM cover-shoot not long after that!

Some Indian dude on my floor, who is obsessed with cricket, has gotten his mate to download the ENTIRE match for him (he constantly gets 40 minute highlight packages of games which are 500mb). I'll watch it with him. :D
DJ-Civic - March 17, 2006 03:12 PM (GMT)
We've got the games on Foxtel running on 7 channels. SEVEN!
They're ok I guess, but they somehow feel like the special olympics...
Random Hero - March 18, 2006 04:29 AM (GMT)
man im glad i dont have foxtel i cant stand flicking through so many channels.....my dad is shocking he never sticks with one when were in a hotel with foxtel
DJ-Civic - March 19, 2006 01:24 PM (GMT)
I saw a very cool/suspenseful moment in men's weightlifting today. The gold medal was going to either Ghana or India. The guy from India had lifted 165kg while the guy from Ghana had gone to 171kg, both on their 2nd lift. As the guy from Ghana is getting ready for his final lift, 176kg(beating the game record), the coaches somehow lost track of the countdown timer so they hurry him to the stage, but as he gets ready and concentrates the timer reaches zero, but he lifts it anyway in a hurry - has no troubles. Only problem is the judges say he was out of time so the lift doesn't count, possibly robbing him of a gold medal!
The Indian guy steps up, and all he has to lift is 172kg for the gold, but decides to go for the game's record; 176kg. Everyone thinks he's got in the bag.... but drops it! *gasp*
In the end the guy from Ghana got the gold, minus the commonwealth record. I thought it was good he got the gold as it was Ghana's 1st ever gold medal in the games.
Suity - March 19, 2006 04:01 PM (GMT)
Australia has double the medal talley of any other country I think? Or was that just double in gold medals.
borgster101 - March 20, 2006 05:56 AM (GMT)
Wow cool moment Civ, also nice to see that it wasn't involving Australia.
Suity - March 20, 2006 09:16 AM (GMT)
All 3 medals in the women's walking event :P
quartz_donkey - March 20, 2006 01:44 PM (GMT)
It seems we're just playing the odds. Have a million people in each and every event.
Random Hero - March 20, 2006 01:47 PM (GMT)
im already over the games....its just boring to me however i much prefer extreme sporting events to this
Spazzallo - March 22, 2006 04:26 PM (GMT)
Only 3 days to go until our public transport system goes from 'very shit' to 'shit' again :).
Texta - March 23, 2006 04:41 AM (GMT)
Proud to say I haven't watched them at all. But I'd like to tune in tonight to see Jana fall over and scrape her face in the 400m Hurdles. That would be killer.

IT WAS THE GREATEST THING TO HAPPEN TO AUSTRALIA!
NOTHING CAN BETTER IT!
(Nines reporting of it)
Too bad I couldn't be buggered to watch it.
Texta - March 24, 2006 03:22 AM (GMT)
yeah, very disappointing. And where the hell does this idea come from that because she won all is forgiven. Firstly I don't think the position she finished has any baring on anything and to be fair to her, it would be pretty mean if (assuming we now think she's ok) she had to finish first to gain our approval or something. And secondly. Fuck. We've got twice as many medals as anyone else, Commonwealth Gold is a mildly greater achievement than winning a national title (which ignoring oversea's entrants pretty much has to be one by an Australian) and doesn't really prove anything. Plus braces look horrible on her!
NismoR34 - March 26, 2006 04:17 PM (GMT)
I haven't watched any of the Games at all, but mum watched a bit of it. When I walked into the loungeroom a few nights ago some Polevaulting (one word or two?) was on and I saw the gorgeous Tatiana Grigorieva.
I didn't realise how hot she really was...

I shudder to think I once deemed you one of the 'Enlightened' ones...
Sickening.
In contrast to all the pessimistic twats in here, I watched the Games and enjoyed the spirit of it all. I think Jana was vilified in the media and was glad to see she slightly made amends... and the Closing Ceremony was excellent.
Melbourne can be proud of itself.

Normally I would preface comments I might make that are not serious by some kind of disclaimer making note that the said comments do not have a serious intent. However I did not include the aformentioned preface in the above comments because I incorrectly assumed members of evolution are able to maturely and intelligently analyse the comments of others and determine a logical intent. This is clearly not the case and I apologise if any of my comments were taken to have more serious connotations than I intended.
Lynx - March 28, 2006 05:48 AM (GMT)
Do not be an arsehole. See, I did that without having to cleverly hide it amongst other words.
I just get the sense you're far too pessimistic these days. And since when did braces look good on anyone?
Squato - March 28, 2006 07:50 AM (GMT)
So...any views about the green and gold reporting of it by Nine?
evO - March 28, 2006 11:07 AM (GMT)
Awful. Channel 9 needs to be shot :)
Lynx - March 28, 2006 11:41 AM (GMT)
Every bad thing they had was overshadowed by the utter awesomeness of Darrel Eastlake.
Such a legend.
Death - May 13, 2006 04:36 AM (GMT)
Commonwealth games are a farce. It fucked up my year 12 by giving a 6 week term one then a 14 week term 2. Australia pwned all the other countries to the point of it not being worth having other countries at all. Gay.
f15active - May 13, 2006 05:20 AM (GMT)
I guess it was annoying as it pushed the Australian Grand Prix back to the 3rd race of the season, when it really should have been the first.
NismoR34 - May 18, 2006 06:12 PM (GMT)
Agreed. It totally screwed up the V8 Supercar championship too, well in a way. Having a non-championship event AFTER the Clipsal 500?
What a load of bollocks. Thank god everything goes back to normal next year.
