Title: Will Master Chief become a gaming legend?
Random Hero - February 1, 2006 12:54 AM (GMT)
Do you think that Master Chief will become a gaming legend? Do you think that he will join the likes of Mario, Solid Snake, Donkey Kong, Joanna Dark, Link, and Gordan Freemann?

I think MS would say he already is a gaming legend, and others probably think that way too. Personally I never really liked Halo that much, I enjoy the games, but I'd say it's over hyped.

I think it just really depends on how long Bungie are willing to keep up the Halo thing, if it winds up as a mere Trilogy I don't think he's got enough character to cement himself as a major gaming hero.

I think the same, but I haven't played Halo or Halo 2 very often at all.

I consider him to be above Solid Snake, Joanna Dark, and Gordan Freeman, and below Mario, Link, Lara Croft, Sonic, Donkey Kong and even Crash Bandicoot.
I bet if you showed someone pictures of Solid Snake, Joanna Dark, and Gordan Freeman, chances are they wouldn't reconise them if they weren't a gamer. The others I listed, I beleive they would reconise.
Let me pre-empt the inevidable "ZOMG! Snake, Joanna Dark, and Gordan Freeman are teh win, wtf!?", well here's my reasons for each one;
Snake: Sure among(Playstation) gamers he's a legend, but outside of the Playstation gamers, I'd say he's not very reconisable(part of that is he looks quite different in each game) Compared to Sony's other main mascot(that is also multiplatform :P) Crash Bandicoot, he's not really associated with anything other than the game.
Joanna Dark: Only been in two games; unlike the MC(who's also only been in two games), one of them is like 5 years old, and the other is very recent, but she looks totally different. If you haven't played the games, you just wouldn't reconise her.
Gordon Freeman: Well as popular as Gordon is, I've not seen him on anything that isn't a Half-Life box, or gamer magazine cover.
Which leads me to my last point...the other characters I listed, have all been heavily used in the media(mainly TV) for advertising, and for some of them, not just their games. Mario and Lara Croft have had their own movies, and been used to promote products (Spagetti and Visa repectively for exmaple)
The MC was heavily pimped in the mainstream media prior to the launch of Halo 2, and that (imho) knocks him above Snake, Joanna and Gordon purely cause he's just had waaay more exposure.
So in short, the MC is up there with Mario and Sonic in my opinion.
Wow, massive post. Feel free to point out any inconsistancies. :P

I dont think non gamers would recognise Link, in fact a lot of people that do recognise him think his name is Zelda :P .

Chief is a lifeless, dull character in a fun game. Unlike Mario, who is a gay plumber who rescues a princess from a raunchy dragon king. Much more interesting, plus you get cake! Win! Get!
ultracrazy1 - February 1, 2006 11:50 AM (GMT)
Probably not. I think he's way out of the leauge of characters that came about in the 8-bit days, but then again, not many of those old characters have had as great a track record as master chief.
Halo 1 and 2 were pretty much across the board very great games. Not revolutionary of course, but he hasn't yet become a joke.
Pacman and Mario on the other hand... I always get the feeling with them, thats describable to how you'd feel if you heard about "a great new movie staring mickey mouse!"
Sonic is another character thats really lost his appeal.
I think there aren't too many characters that can stay interesting for that long. If there is one though, I'd say its Ryu. I don't think I'll ever get to a point where enough is enough with Ryu.

The point for me was when I first played SF2. :P
I hate that guy. <_<

Lifeless and dull is a tad harsh. Considering the movie, the appearence in Dead Or Alive 4 and the fact that he basically is Microsoft Xbox are very good signs he's on the fast track to legend.

I thought Allard was the XBox mascot? That lovable bald guy.

wikipedia's whole streetfighter section is a very good read. Whoever wrote that stuff really knows what they're talking about.

You make me sick! Get outta my sight!

Ryu will forever be superior to The Chief! It's all about character design!

You'll know Chief is a gaming legend when games like "Master Chief Party" and "Halo Racing" come out :P .

NICE!
Also: God forbid!
I'm not really for or against Master Chief, I like the occassional 16 player capture the flag, but man, that is such a bad idea. Putting a spartan in DOA4 is exactly the kind of bullshit promotion that I can appreciate.
Coming up next: Spartans get their mark 6 armour off in "DOAX2 hi def barbie dolls sex it up with the cast of Halo!"

Super Spartan Kart Circuit: Double Dash!!
Chief is not superior to Ryu or any SF character for that matter. I don't think he's a better character than Snake -who's got an intriguing background and a cool voice. Plus he has a mullet and a freakin' bandana!! :woot:
Resident-Seven - February 3, 2006 10:28 AM (GMT)
I can't see any character getting as big/well known as Pacman, Mario or Sonic, let alone someone who doesn't even have a face.

Call me crazy but that sounds like a good idea.
Cubeoid - March 11, 2006 01:51 AM (GMT)
OK, you're crazy.
Well I guess it depends what you mean by legend. A legend to gamers or a legend that is recognisable outside of the gaming community? Solid Snake, Joanna Dark and Gordan Freeman are all better and more well liked characters within the "hardcore gaming community". Outside of that however, as pointed out already the Master Chief is much more easily recognised.
I think for the Master Chief to really become a gaming icon, we need at least one more Halo game that is absolutley first class and the movie would have to be good too.
Random Hero - March 14, 2006 08:40 AM (GMT)
Yeah I have a good feeling about the halo movie........the only video game moview ive had a good feeling about
Jiro - March 31, 2006 06:00 AM (GMT)
im not so sure about the icon status. see if you asked a non-gamer who the master chief was, they would be like "wtf mate?" where as you asked them about marion they would all know. everyone knows mario and sonic and crash bandicoot.
also those characters mention above also target younglings, so that kinda helps
