Title: Albums of the year
Description: 2005
NismoR34 - December 4, 2005 02:12 AM (GMT)
This thread is also pretty self explanatory, so again I won't say much.
What are your albums of the year? Top ten, top five, whatever - you choose how you want to compile your list. Just do it. ;)
My list/s are going to take some thought I think, as I have a lot of releases to consider. Can't wait to see yours though, so hop to it.
JJJames7 - December 4, 2005 03:18 AM (GMT)
Sing The Sorrow - AFI (2003)
Obsession with AFI has boosted by 110% this year. Last year, I had Sing The Sorrow and The Art Of Drowning and thought they were both good albums to listen to. However, this year, I've pretty much gone AFI crazy. Now I own all of thier albums and am tracking down old records (only know of one record shop around my area). My favorite band of this year, easily.
The Terror State - Anti-Flag (200)
Got into Anti-Flag in January of this year (I remember because it was around the time of my birthday) and only had one album, Underground Network for a few months. Missed them when they came to our shores in Febuary which I deeply regret. The Terror State is one of thier best albums, combining the fast pace of Underground Network, but still keeping the same amount of dedication to what they make music for.
From Under The Cork Tree - Fall Out Boy (2005)
I had the first seven tracks of thier album Take This To Your Grave repeating themselves all through last year, so needless to say, I was pretty excited about a new album coming out. It still has the dark humor that came with thier older album, but wraps it up in a flashier, neater package. Quite a few popular songs on this dime.
The Silence In Black And White - Hawthorne Heights (2005)
An incredibly deep album that I could not stop listening to through my CD player earlier this year when I was between iPods (black and white one fucked up so I didn't get my color one for about a month). It's probably not the best album I've ever heard, but songs from it always popup in your playlist at the perfect times. Oh, and Nikki FM isn't for girls >_<
Dear You - Jawbreaker (1995)
How I adored this album for so long. I purchased it around the time I was still into Nirvana and to me the two bands sounded awfully similar. This band opened up the whole genre of emocore to me. Doesn't get alot of listens these days but I must thank Jawsy for the sheer awesomeness he has unveiled to me.
Static Prevails/Bleed American - Jimmy Eat World (1997/2001)
I couldn't really seperate these albums. I got Static Prevails last year and Bleed American this year but they've both been on constant rotation, almost as much as AFI have been. Static Prevails is an absolutly breathtaking album and Bleed American is, in my opinion, music you can sit back to and relax. Download The Middle and this comes pretty clear.
Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge - My Chemical Romance (2005)
Still only own this album from My Chemical Romance, a band I discovered this year. Again, one of those albums were the first four or five tracks blew you away, and forced you to put them in your main playlist. An aggressive album but with meaning and deep lyrics.
Page Avenue - Story Of The Year (2003)
Got both this album and thier 2005 effort, In The Wake Of Determination this year, but I much prefer this album over thier newest one. I had no idea how crazy these guys were live untill I saw them at the Taste Of Chaos. Many of you may be familiar with the opening track And The Hero Will Drown from Need For Speed Underground - an awesome song that got me into the band.
Full Collapse - Thursday (2001)
The only album bar Sing The Sorrow which I can listen to every single track on the album. Start to finish. An absolute piece of brilliance, there isn't much more I can say that I haven't already about Full Collapse. Simply amazing.
Correct me if any of those dates are wrong. I wasn't sure if this thread was about your favorite albums that have come out this year, or your favorite albums you have listened to this year, so I put in both.

This thread is running at Hyper at the moment, and I'm pretty surprised to see people listing In Your Honor - Foo Fighters. Hey, different strokes and all, but I was severely underwhelmed by this album. I cannot believe that I bought it. I paid 27 bucks for Best Of You...
List:
Equal 1st
LP - Wolfmother: Unbelievable debut from the Sydney trio and they will be the face of Aussie rock for the next ten years. This album punches you in the face and forces you on the ride of your life. Hard, fast, cheap. How all good things should be.
Equal 1st
You Could Have It So Much Better - Franz Ferdinand: I bought this album on release, and originally, I thought it was nowhere near the sheer brilliance of their self titled debut. Alas, I was wrong. After listening to it a few times and noticing most of the songs sitting in my top 50 most played, I changed my mind. An excellent release and a worthy successor to their self titled debut.
These two albums are the only albums I have bought that were released this year, and I was so keyed up for both releases I bought them on release day. I can't seperate them, they are both just that damn awesome.

The acoustic disc had some good stuff on it, my only reason for including it in the top ten. The rock side was pretty generic at best, with Best of You clocking in as one of the weaker tracks.

I think they actually released an EP a while a back. Well, I can remember hearing some of their stuff before this year that's for sure. But yeah, good old school rock band.

Certainly did, it was released October 2004.

If you already have the LP, there isn't much incentive to buy it. All the tracks off the EP are on it (albiet, re-recorded. They shaved 3 minuites of White Unicorn :o )
Anyway, my top 5(ish):
1. Wolfmother - LP (October 2005)
Haven't loved an album this much in years  . Was hooked ever since i saw them play a $10 gig early this year, and the album deserves every accolade it gets.
2. Bloc Party - Silent Alarm (March 2005)
Never really been an indie fan at all, but boy did these guys change that. Wholely refreshing, they just have that extra sheen of polish that elevates them above every other similar guitar rock band you've heard.
3. The Mars Volta - Frances the Mute (March 2005)
I still prefer 'Deloused in the Comatorium' (one of my favourite albums ever), but be damned if this isnt one intense CD. It's a very hard album to get into, but you certainly get some very interesting organic sounds. Some of the 'soundscape' sections are hit and miss.
4. Doves - Some Cities (March 2005)
It may sound weird, but I always think of shades of grey and warm autumn colours while listening to this CD. It's the laid-back hypnotic sounds, overtly British accent in the vocals... I can't really explain it, all i know is I like listening to it.
5. System of a Down - Mesmerize/Hypnotize (May/Nov 2005)
Snuck it in as a double, as I doubt both would be here on their own accord. I never was a huge fan at all (I don't even own Toxicity :whistling: ) but I'm a bit of a fan now.
6. Cog - New Normal (March 2005)
Saw them live, was bored as hell. Listened to the album, and what can I say; just kept growing on me. The lyrical content is sometimes repeditive and vapid, but the music is very tight.
Mentions of CD's I picked up this year, but weren't produced this year;
At the Drive-In - Relationship of Command
Death from Above 1979 - You're a Woman, I'm a Machine
The Music - Welcome to the North
Modest Mouse - Good News for People Who Love Bad News
The Black Keys - Rubber Factory
Pink Floyd - Dark Side of The Moon ( :shady: )
Queens of the Stone Age - Songs for the Deaf
Tool - Aenima
josh - December 6, 2005 12:55 AM (GMT)
I wasn't really thrilled by much music this year, with the notable exceptions of:
1. Billy Corgan - TheFutureEmbrace
2. Ryan Adams and The Cardinals - Jacksonville City Nights
3. Jimmy Chamberlin Complex - Life Begins Again
4. System Of A Down - Mesmerize
5. My Chemical Romance - Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge
~DC - December 6, 2005 05:43 AM (GMT)
Have to add Propagandhi - Potemkin City Limits. Bought it today and it is utterly fantastic.

Yeah, I'm buying it as we speak and so far it isn't too bad. It better kick in soon though. First two tracks have been a bit average.
Mykle - December 7, 2005 05:57 AM (GMT)
Arcade Fire ~ Funeral
An absolutely stunning album.
Franz Ferdinand ~ You Could Have It So Much Better
Mav got me onto this, and at first I didnt like it. But it's grown on me, and I'm a big fan, though the track they released wasnt the best.
Queens of the Stoneage ~ Lullabies to Paralyse
Not as good as Rated R or the epic Songs for the Deaf, but not too bad overall.
Wolfmother ~ Self-Titled
I adored this album, I just hope WM arent one-trick ponies. Fingers crossed for the next one.
And for the worst album of the year:
Weezer ~ Make Believe
Complete and utter shit.
Agent Knight - December 7, 2005 07:03 AM (GMT)
System of a Down - Mesmerise/Hypnotise
Absolute brilliance. Their best album (or albums) yet.
Sufjan Stevens - Illinois
One of the best albums I have heard in an extremly long time.
~fin~

By the by, a mate of mine saw Wolfmother perform once. Mid-concert, the drummer vomited onto his set, and didnt skip a beat. ROCK.
