Title: Games of the year
Description: 2005

NismoR34 - December 4, 2005 02:03 AM (GMT)
Typical end of year thread really, and self explanatory too.

What were/are your games of 2005?

There were some absolutely rocking releases this year, on all platforms so choosing should be interesting. I think I can guess what will take the award overall though, but we'll see.

Get cracking. :D

Iroquois - December 4, 2005 02:55 AM (GMT)
Iro's game of the year = Total Overdose

Suity - December 4, 2005 03:01 AM (GMT)
Not having played much I'll say Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater

JJJames7 - December 4, 2005 03:26 AM (GMT)
I haven't played many games at all this year... Perhaps it is Counter-Strike Source, but I got that in September... Gotta think a little.

StueyRowls - December 5, 2005 12:39 AM (GMT)
Here are the biggest highlights for me:

Donkey Kong Jungle Beat (GCN): The most inventive platformer ever. I have has so much fun with this title it should be a crime. From trying to perfect every level to get platinum medals, to the awsome combo system this game had me hooked from day one.

Forza Motorsport (Xbox): While the driving engine isn't as advanced as GT4's, this is one seriously kick ass sim. All the courses are fantastic and the decal editor is beyond amazing. Online just tops this title off, as it's intergrated into the title so well and is a blast to play. It's also a better 'racing' game than GT ever has been, due to the excellent AI that behaves as a human would.

Gran Turismo 4 (PS2): The best 'driving' simulator around with some of the best graphics on the PS2, pity they didn't fix the crappy AI. Probably the best GT title for me due to the sublime Logitech Driving Force Pro :dance3:

Pro Evolution Soccer 5 (Xbox): Best football game period. The way the players are animated, first touches, and a true feeling that each player has diffrent skills make this one of the greatest sports games ever. Xbox Live play is pretty good aswell.

God of War (PS2): Definately my favorite 3rd person action game of all time, this game just simply rocks. The combat system is so refined and is an absalute joy to play. The story is really good aswell, as you really care about Kratos and his fight against Aries. Pity about the games length.

Ridge Racer (PSP): The main reason I bought my PSP and I don't regret it for a second. Acting as a 'best of' for the series, as well as adding it's own twist with the introduction of nitro, this game is definately the best in the series. Great graphics aswell.

Resident Evil 4 (GCN): Simply the best resi title since RE2 (still the best title in my mind) it succesfully combined heaps of action with a survival horror theme. Simply stunning graphics top off a great title.

There probably the biggest highlights for me, definately been a great gaming year.

DJ-Civic - December 5, 2005 02:43 PM (GMT)
Resident Evil 4.

This game was the only one that had me glued to the TV from start to finish.

Honorable Mentions: Call of Duty 2, F.E.A.R, MGS3, Killer 7, GT4, DMC3.

borgster101 - December 6, 2005 02:33 AM (GMT)
Resident Evil 4 (GCN) Indeed the best game of 2005, there really isn't any competition, enjoyable from start to finish, there isnt a dull moment in this game.

Killer7 (GCN) Extremely weird, but enjoyable a very different game with an extremely serious subject matter, probably the sleeper hit of the year.

Jade Empire (Xbox) Some people didnt like it that much, but for me anyway there wasn't really much fantastic Xbox games released this year, this great but perhaps not excellent RPG therefore stands out.

Fahrenheit (Xbox) Another one of those 'different' games, certainly not perfect but it's one of the most memorable.

Fire Emblem Path of Radiance (GCN) Just recently got this, and it's fantastic stategy RPG goodness, doesn't stay too much from the GBA formula, but that's fine because it's so fun :)

Half Life 2 - Game of the Year Edition (PC) Having just got a capable enough PC this year in order to play this game, and also this particular version of the game was released 'this year', it's indeed one of the most memorable gaming experiences, which I enjoyed this year.

DJ-Civic - December 6, 2005 12:12 PM (GMT)
Oh if we can choose 1 for each platform, here we go. :P

GCN: Resident Evil 4

Xbox: Fahrenheit
New, unique and fresh. Something that's hard to find these days...

PS2: GT4
Despite it's online mode being taken out, it's still the best realistic racer out there.

PC: Call of Duty 2
I loved this game from the start, and while FEAR was also good, I think I enjoyed this more.

ultracrazy1 - December 7, 2005 07:17 AM (GMT)
1. RE4
2. DMC3
3. Capcom Classics (if it counts)
4. SC3
5. God of War
and if it were released here I'd include Ninja Gaiden Black <_<

Its been a pretty good year for the genres I'm into :)

StompBrother - December 7, 2005 01:46 PM (GMT)
5. Nintendogs
Great coding. Fairly open ended and pretty much nailed how it's like to have a dog. Minus a lot of the REAL and annoying care issues though. Other than that perfect.

4. Fire Emblem: Path Of Radiance
A personal choice really. Love the series to death and seeing it in grand fashion on the GC is fantastic. Tough as nails too, moreso than the GBA chapters. It just does so many things right. Just remember that RESET is your best friend.

3. Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan!
So close to being no.1. Quite simply the happiest game on earth. All DS owners should have this. Quite simply the best DS game still. Makes perfect use of the DS's capabilities and one of the few games merging visuals, sound and gameplay together to form a cohesive whole.

2. Resident Evil 4
Sheesh. Closest thing to have to gaming perfection really. Perfectly balanced gameplay. One of the best looking console game ever made and is lengthy. We're talking 2 games long. But quite simply there is a lot o love put into the game by the developers. And it shows int he final product.

1. Killer 7
The best game this year no doubt. Presentation, Music, atmosphere, themes, narrative, story, style, gameplay.... it all forms together to a perfect blend that fits my psyche to a tee. A truly mature and adult game. Nothing else came close this year int erms of GOTY.

I have a couple for a few platforms. I haven't bought many games due to the sheer amount of money I had to put in to get a new computer.

PC - Battlefield 2

Fantastic game that lived up to all my expectations that I'd had for it over the previous year, the limited number of maps made it repetitive but extremely enjoyable none the less.

F1Challenge - This must have been released something like 3 years ago but it has and still is a blast to race against friends in an organised championship.

PS2 - Ace Combat 5 : Squadron Leader

The sole PS2 game I bought this year up to yesterday, I didn't think it would be possible to improve over AC4, but Namco managed it.

DBZ Budokai : Tenkaichi

Bought this yesterday, unlocking content has been a little easy (despite the fact there is tons of it), but it is very faithful to the anime series and the refined combat system that sets it apart from the previous 3 Budokai games really spices things up.

I'm not 100% sure but those 2 games may have been the only games I spent my own money on this year.

XBOX - I don't think I bought anything this year for xbox, wow.

GCN - Likewise.

I'm looking forward to Mario Kart DS and my first portable since god knows when on Christmas Day!

ElPresidente - December 7, 2005 08:45 PM (GMT)
Here be mine argh...

I'll go the multiplatform route too.

Top Games by Platform

PSP - Lumines
(Honorable Mention - Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories)

Who thought there would be something new in the world of falling blocks? An almost blinding orgasm of sight and sound. Perhaps my most played game this year.

DS - Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow
(Honorable Mention - Advance Wars: Dual Strike )

Castlevania is back baby! Not quite the slice of 'OMG' that was Symphony of the Night but getting very close.

Xbox - Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath
(Honorable Mention - Farenheit)

Explaining this FPS/platformer hybrid is a futile task other than to say it was one of the most refreshing gaming experiences I had all year.

PS2 - We Love Katamari
(Honorable Mention - Guitar Hero)

If I had played the original Katamari Damacy on release then I probably wouldn't have nominated this due to its similarities... but then again I was playing it within a week of finishing the first one and I am still nominating it. Too strange to describe, too fun to explain.

Gamecube - Killer 7
(Honorable Mention - Resident Evil 4)

Like so many others I was just in awe of the strange non-game playing out on my screen. It was nothing like I expected and all the better for it.

PC - Civilization IV
(Honorable Mention - Battlefield 2)

This is how you revisit a series... by giving it a total make over. Graphics, sound, gameplay mechanics... nothing was spared by Firaxis as the overhauled an aging beast in to the very best game released this year. PC Powerplay's second ever 10/10... mind you I gave the score... but still!!!

KickyFunkFresh - December 7, 2005 10:11 PM (GMT)
Can't be stuffed ordering them or anything but here are my highlights of the year.

Resident Evil 4 (GCN
Killer 7 (GCN)
Burnout revenge (Xbox)
Mario Kart DS (DS)
Castlevania DoS (DS)
Gunstar Future Heroes (GBA)
Zelda Minish Cap (GBA)

Texta - December 7, 2005 11:06 PM (GMT)
Battlefield 2 wins it by a nose over FEAR.

That said all I play these days is CSS.

borgster101 - December 8, 2005 10:08 AM (GMT)
Oh yeah the DS had a great year (especially towards the end), Castlevania, Advance Wars and Mario Kart were all top gaming titles, and Nintendogs was certainly fresh and fun :) .

BrotherEstapol - December 8, 2005 11:27 AM (GMT)
Battlefield 2, Call of Duty 2, and Resident Evil 4.

I'm in a lazy mood. :P

JJJames7 - December 8, 2005 12:10 PM (GMT)
I thought of some from the very start of the year:

Advance Wars 2 (GBA)
Fire Emblem (GBA)

Pro Evolution Soccer 5 (PS2)
Star Wars KotOR and KotOR II (PC)
The Sims 2 (PC)
Warcraft III (PC)

EDIT: If there are people out there who haven't played the KotOR series, fuck, get both the games. When I found out about them number II was already out, KotOR was only $20 so I picked it up and then bought KotOR II once I completed number one. They are SO worth it.

BrotherEstapol - December 8, 2005 12:53 PM (GMT)
Warcraft 3 is like 4/5 years old dude. >_>

JJJames7 - December 8, 2005 01:49 PM (GMT)
Bought it late last year/early this year, haven't played it much within the last half of this year (see Xfire - less than one hour). Actually have never played it online...

DZ - December 8, 2005 09:23 PM (GMT)
I won't list anything in order or anything cos like Estapol, I'm lazy. Here are the games I really enjoyed this year:

GTA:San Andreas
PES5
God of War
MGS3: Snake Eater
Jak 3

Honorable mention: uranus

Aren't games on this list actually meant to be released this year? Not when you played them? Because Jak 3 was released late last year.

DZ - December 9, 2005 09:12 AM (GMT)
Isn't this thread about games we enjoyed this year? I played all those games through to this year.

Jak 3 for example I got on 31 Dec and finished it the following year on 1 Jan. Played it non stop.

ultracrazy1 - December 9, 2005 08:01 PM (GMT)

Cubeoid - December 10, 2005 11:16 AM (GMT)
1. Resident Evil 4
2. GTA: San Andreas
3. Burnout 3: Revenge
4. Geist

Damn this has been a pretty poor year for me, with the exception of RE4. Was KoTOR2 released this year? If so add that. Also add Timesplitters: Future Perfect...and maybe CSS.

NismoR34 - December 13, 2005 02:25 AM (GMT)
Can't believe I forgot to post mine in this thread.

My game of the year is without doubt Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater.
This game just completely blew me away in every department.

Runner up would be Resident Evil 4, because like everyone else out there in the world it also blew me away. It's just so... well, words just can't describe its brilliance.

Notable mentions include: Forza Motorsport, Gran Turismo 4 (racing game of the year), Need for Speed: Most Wanted, Fahrenheit (sleeper hit of the year), Far Cry: Instincts and Killer 7.

Okay, so I haven't played those last two yet but I know I'll love them both...

borgster101 - December 13, 2005 07:16 AM (GMT)
Technically the games of the year should have been released this year, but of course this isn't mandatory or anything.

I hear that! *Hi 5*

...

Well the games I enjoyed the most this year were probably Resident Evil 4 and Fire Emblem (GBA)

Also Advance Wars DS, Mario Kart DS and others were fun.

Might make a proper list.. though not likely.

DZ - December 30, 2005 09:58 AM (GMT)
Eurogamer is updating its top 50 games of 2005 list soon. They've already posted 50-11, the top 10 should be revealed soon. They've got the best list around. Good taste.

borgster101 - December 31, 2005 10:40 AM (GMT)
Been playing through Killer7 again, it makes a lot more sense the second time through, like those movies where when you watch it the second time you pick up on all this stuff you missed. Indeed the game is one of the most memorable of this year, playing it again only confirms this :) .
