Title: Which monitor do you use?
Description: If you have one, which you may not
JJJames7 - November 7, 2005 11:10 AM (GMT)
I'm using the Samsung 172x. I bought my PC back when I moddled everything off PCPP's Beast and Mutant, and this was their monitor of choice. I think I got a pic of my setup somewhere...
LOL! or not. :|Shit, that's not it. I'll post a pic when I get my digital camera back. Anyway I've been looking at a Dell 24" Widescreen - Dell™ 2405FPW (thanks to geek, again, what can't that guy do). I'm hoping to get one for christmas.
BrotherEstapol - November 7, 2005 11:30 AM (GMT)
I've got the model down from that, the 20.1 2005FPW.
I've got no complains except that you'll need a high-end video card to run at the native resolution(1680x1050), but my 6800 GT seems to handle things alright. :)
Though if you're buying that monitor, I hope you have a 7800 GTX...
BTW, that picture; not lol. :|
JJJames7 - November 7, 2005 11:39 AM (GMT)
You need to lighen up Brestie! :P j/k
I have a Radeon 9600XT (256MB), will that be alright?
BrotherEstapol - November 7, 2005 01:40 PM (GMT)
Well, not for the 24" it won't...you might scrape by with the 20.1" though.
Another problem with these monitors is that they aren't 16:9; they are 16:10, so you still get black bars at the top and bottom of the screen with DVD's. Also, most games don't support 16:10 resolutions out of the box, so you have to then get a hack so you can change the FOV and resolution.
Thankfully though, games are starting to support the aspect ratio.(Source games and Call of Duty 2 in particular)
_MetalliX_ - November 7, 2005 01:58 PM (GMT)
I think its 18" or 19" I can never remember.
Dakwota - November 7, 2005 09:07 PM (GMT)
ATM i'm using a Viewmaster 17" CRT (non flat)...
My Dad's got a Viewmaster 19" CRT Flat Screen and I'm trying to convince him to get an LCD so I can have his (he needs desk space anyway :P)
Texta - November 8, 2005 05:49 AM (GMT)
I've got a Diamond Digital 19" flatscreen CRT. It does the job, but isn't easy on desk space.
I've though about updating to that Dell 24" LCD up the top, but even though I have a 7800GTX, I think if I was running that resolution I wouldn't be able to play some of the newer games (ie COD2) with the graphics maxed out. So I think I'll stick with my monitor for now. Plus I have better things I could blow that much money on.
rampaging_geek - November 8, 2005 07:16 AM (GMT)
17" Auriga (I don't know what that is, either) fishbowl CRT. Running 1024x768 at 85Hz
UltraGekko - November 8, 2005 11:04 AM (GMT)
Currently using a flat 17" Viewmaster CRT. Want to upgrade to either a 19" LCD or that 24" Dell in the near future.
With the Dell it is possible to play games at 1600x1200 (there will be black bars on the sides).
BrotherEstapol - November 8, 2005 11:07 AM (GMT)
That's still a very taxing resolution.
UltraGekko - November 8, 2005 11:14 AM (GMT)
Not for a 7800GTX or an X1800XT. Although FEAR might push them.
BrotherEstapol - November 8, 2005 11:45 AM (GMT)
Yeah, but those are top of the range NOW, what about in 6/12 months time when the latest and greatest games are out?
Personally I think if you're going for a widescreen, get the one I have, the 2005FPW, since it has a lower resolution.(if you consider 1680*1050 low...)
If you're just gaming, then at the moment I'd suggest you get a 19inch LCD, more bang for your buck, and less hassle.
Lordage - November 8, 2005 02:10 PM (GMT)
I have a ViewSonic E70f.
If you want a pic, go watch Pure Pwnage Ep. 1. Same monitor as Jeremy has (I only noticed a few weeks back :P ).

Think you had an 18.1" ...
Anyway I am running a 172x as well, and will hopefully be picking up a 2405 for my Console Gaming / Movie watching in my room.

Yeah, I haven't tried running any of my games at 1600x1200, but I think HL2 would run ok but all the new games I have (FEAR, Serious Sam 2, AOEIII, Call of Duty 2) would seriously struggle at that resolution (unless I like turned the graphics off their max settings).
You'll just have to get 2 7800GTXs and run them in SLI.

Samsung 753 DF 17" flatscreen
Bought it for $400 when I saw it in the mini-beastie section of PCPP. Unfortunately it's worth bugger all now and I'm looking for a 172x (just a cheap LCD with good ms rate). Sayyy...how much are you willing to sell your monitor for James?

I'll send you a PM when I'm not tired and hyped up on coke. :)

I've got a quote on a used 172x at $170 from ebay (excl p&h) with 4 days to go. If I don't receive a better price from you, my money is going elsewhere ;) Plus I don't think I could wait until xmas either before you swap your monitor
JJJames7 - November 12, 2005 11:54 PM (GMT)
Ah. Go with the Ebay one then. I wanted to sell it for a little more...
/backslash - November 13, 2005 07:45 AM (GMT)
Well there's still another couple of days to go on it as it's not at a "buy it now" price. I'll see how it goes anyway. The most I'm looking to pay is maybe $220

Jiro - April 1, 2006 10:23 AM (GMT)
What do you think of this monitor?
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16824024006has anyone used one? or know of someone who has?
its from MSY for $355
BrotherEstapol - April 2, 2006 12:50 PM (GMT)
Seems, good.
I'd google for reviews before buying though. ;)
Jiro - April 3, 2006 07:38 AM (GMT)
yea thats the thing i cant find any
i think i might as well just get it, its only 355 and i'm not really all that fussed on a monitor's performance, i mean the thing im using now is terrible :P
my cousin has one and it seems to be fine
_MetalliX_ - April 3, 2006 07:40 AM (GMT)
Now that it has all been smoothed out... I offically have a Dell 1905FP
Random Hero - April 3, 2006 11:42 AM (GMT)
nice, id hate to have my monitor break down as it weighs a ton. ah well at least its still under warranty!!
f15active - April 3, 2006 12:08 PM (GMT)
My monitor is a LG Studioworks 795SC 17" CRT. I've had it since 2000.
I wondered where I could find this information then realised it is on top of the off button. :P
Omni - May 14, 2006 11:41 PM (GMT)
Mines the Sony SDM HS75.
dave_cool31 - July 5, 2006 03:00 AM (GMT)
I'm using a 19" BenQ FP937S LCD

it's pretty dang awesome, imo.
My dad has a 17" BenQ of some sort, it's kind of annoying, though, because he has a Radeon 9200SE in that compy and the native res of the monitor is 1280x1024, so I can't really play games on it at all, at least not without them looking awful to the max. It doesn't matter for my dad though, what with his not playing games and such...
/backslash - July 5, 2006 08:07 AM (GMT)

It does have an input for an RGB cable. Crystal clear. Great for games.
