The forthcoming DS Zelda title will be an experiment in the series in terms of control - and no, it won't be yet another Four Swords remake!

EGM magazine have interviewed the long-time head honcho of the Zelda series, Eiji Aonuma. Talking about the currently untitled upcoming DS Zelda game, Aonuma said the title would be a new episode of the series, and not just a 'Four Swords DS' as previously rumoured.

He confirmed the game will be a completely new experience in the Zelda series as the game would feature a totally new system of control, allowing the user to live the adventure of Link "from a different angle of sight".

Using the touch screen, the player will be able to directly handle the various objects our hero Link uses, which Aonuma says will allow a greater immersion into the game's world.

"What I can tell you is that it's going to use the touch screen for a very unique control system that people have never experienced in a Zelda game before. I think one of the important elements of the Zelda series has always been that you feel like you're in the world doing the things that Link is doing and touching the things that Link is touching. This time you'll be able to use the touch screen and actually touch those items and objects yourself." he said.

Very interesting news indeed. We're not quite sure what it all means (surely not a first-person Zelda?), but when we hear more, we'll update you!

I don't know that I like the idea of a FPS Zelda... but I'm sure the game will be sweet anyways.

"from a different angle of sight"

It could mean alot of different things, we know Nintendo like to be cryptic...

Doesnt mean it will be a FPS

No there'll only be a Zelda FPS when Microsoft buys Nintendo. :P

Well I've always thought of the Metroid Prime series as how a first person Zelda would control (it has a lock on targeting system and the grappling beam is just like the hookshot).

Fuck what the hell is that supposted to mean? During lunch I was suprised as to why I am so interested... I guess becuase we might get something as addictive as OoT in our hands!

I was rereading the part of cs2's post where it says things about selecting the weapons Link can use by using thr touch screen - I am fairly sure this means that there will be three or so "buttons" up the top right hand corner of the bottom screen (think the little pictures of the three C buttons on OoT, and you can touch the weapon you want to use. Perhaps you can also throw bombs and pull back (bow and) arrows with the stylus, much like the bomb minigames in Super Mario 64 DS?

I get the feeling we'll be seeing Zelda DS as a fully 3D game :) I am thinking that GBA graphics just wont cut it anymore... I mean AW:DS looks to be a great game but SPRITES? Sif. :P

EDIT: "What I can tell you is that it's going to use the touch screen for a very unique control system that people have never experienced in a Zelda game before."

In a Zelda game before... If this does turn out to be a FPS then the controls for Metroid Prime: Hunters springs to mind...
