Details from Nintendo's DS-centric press conference in Japan. USB dongle, Brain Training 2, more cool WiFi Connection graphics...its all here.

In Tokyo this morning, Nintendo held a press conference expressly for the purpose of fleshing out details on their upcoming plans for the DS. At the forefront of the conference was talk of the Nintendo Wi-fi Connection, to debut in conjunction with online-enabled DS games this fall. In a switch with the West, the first Wi-fi Connection game in Japan will be Animal Crossing on November 23rd followed by Mario Kart DS on December 8th (note: November 11th in Europe). Actually connecting to the service has been setup to be as flexible and simple as possible.

This Wi-fi connection graphic outlines the three tenets of Nintendo's online strategy: "Easy, Safe, Free".
The conference outlined four particular methods:

Using a Wi-fi router, of which Buffalo's AOSS and NEC's Raku Raku Musen Start were given particular mention
Using a special USB dongle that simply plugs in to the USB port of a online-enabled computer

Using a Nintendo wireless access point, with up to 1000 planned for installation in japanese game stores
Using a FreeSpot access point of which 3000 currently are setup throughout Japan

Nintendo also reiterated that all of their games will be free to play, though third parties may independently opt to set up their own fee structures.

This is awesome, I have a USB dongle and a router! Sucks how far away Mario Kart is though.

borgster101 - October 5, 2005 12:17 PM (GMT)
Cool, some solid details there, it looks like it should be hassle free :)

auhsor - October 5, 2005 01:05 PM (GMT)
Well I guess this news is pretty much what people are expecting, so I guess its good that we are hearing it.

More news

Buffalos press release

It kinda confirms that dial up is out of the question and only high speed connections will be supported. I will have to start watching my download so I don't go over my limit and get capped. I hate being capped.

borgster101 - October 6, 2005 11:09 AM (GMT)
Looks like I'll need to get broadband..

NismoR34 - October 7, 2005 05:25 PM (GMT)
Me too, although that was the plan anyway. Least this USB adaptor thing will be useful, providing it comes here that is.

Fyuusii - October 7, 2005 05:50 PM (GMT)
What the hell is a dongle, anyway?

What the hell is a dongle, anyway?

The dongle will turn your PC into an active Internet connected Wireless Access Point so your DS will connect to it, for its Internet activity.

I would be totally supprised if it didn't make it here. Even if it didn't just import one from Here and here

Oh for crying out loud, I know that! I'm a bloody software developer, you know. :P

I was more curious to the term itself, dongle. It just sounds a little silly.

JJJames7 - October 8, 2005 03:41 AM (GMT)
Yeah I know, people at school refer to the USB Strorage Devices as Dongles. Sounds like another nickname for your...

Gio - October 8, 2005 11:10 AM (GMT)
Can the USB device plug straight into the ADSL modem?
That would be alot more conveniant.

If the modem's connected to your compy, it makes virtually no difference...

Gio - October 8, 2005 11:30 AM (GMT)
But if it's plugged into the modem the Broadband juice should go straight to the dongle, right? :P

cd2 - October 8, 2005 11:32 AM (GMT)
Well you should of said it was a silly name then. :P

Yes, but unless you're using carrier pidgeons for your Internet, the difference will be practically unnoticable.

Oh and CD2; my mistake, I thought it was self-explanatory. :P

borgster101 - October 9, 2005 12:52 AM (GMT)
Regarding this 'dongle' I'm thinking it'll be availble directly through Nintendo Australia.

cd2 - October 9, 2005 09:06 AM (GMT)
That would be a mistake I think, but I think you will be right.

borgster101 - October 9, 2005 10:54 AM (GMT)
Well I'm not sure if it's a mistake per se, primarily because it isn't 'required' to play WiFi games on the DS, nevertheless as long as its availble in some form I wouldnt worry too much about it.

cd2 - October 9, 2005 11:01 AM (GMT)
but its a cheaper alterative then buying a AP. Not everyone wants Wireless. And not having it in the shops, so you can get it that day and have a bit of awareness is in my mind a mistake.

Look at component cables, they sold thru them only and I don't know to many that have picked them up. just because they can't be bother ording from them, im one of them..

It's not that hard to order them, the reason Nintendo didnt distribute the component cables to stores is 'because' of the lack of interest in them, it is not the 'cause' of the lack of interest, of course you can think of it as a cause, but distributors dont just 'decide' that something isnt of interest, the conduct cost benefit analaysis of the distribution, if enough people ordered the component cables this would encourage Nintendo to distribute the cables to stores.

Hence they are likely to offer the USB dongle through them directly at first see how it kicks off, and then perhaps distribute it to stores if there is enough interest in the product, it's too early to tell at this point, they might distribute the product to stores straight away.

You suggest that people were not aware of the component cables, i.e. if its in the shops there is more awarness, I disagree, everyone who bought a GCN would be aware of the component cables because it is advertised on the box! Everyone who buys a WiFi enabled game will likely be aware of the USB dongle regardless if its in the shops or not because the product will be mentioned on the box or in the instruction manual.

cd2 - October 13, 2005 01:16 AM (GMT)
I see your point, but I still feel it is a mistake, they should have them in teh shops from the get go. less of a pain and can be playing online same day as getting the game.

Fyuusii - October 13, 2005 10:50 AM (GMT)
We might be lucky enough to see some third-party variations in retail, though.

borgster101 - October 13, 2005 11:08 AM (GMT)
Yeah that's possible, the thing is at the moment NAL hasn't said much about the WiFi situation in Australia, so at the moment everything is just speculation. Would be nice for them to make an announcement.

BrotherEstapol - October 24, 2005 04:19 AM (GMT)
Expect Australian DS WiFi news in the next 2 days.

That's all I've been told. :P

Though keep in mind I haven't got the full story from my source.

VOOK - October 27, 2005 11:52 AM (GMT)
Ooo Im a source now :D :D

Anyway "My Source" says another company is delaying it.

UltraGekko - October 28, 2005 01:37 AM (GMT)
This wouldn't be the company responsible for 'delaying' Australia's uptake in broadband compared to other countries?

Actually you mention the 'T' word on your site in regards to the US McDonald's announcement.

borgster101 - October 28, 2005 02:22 AM (GMT)
What the hell is going on in this thread? A chick dressed as McDonald, some crazy doodle, an unknown source!!?! What the :argh: !!

cd2 - October 28, 2005 02:52 AM (GMT)
