Title: Best Zombie Movie
Description: You decide!

Beast - August 23, 2005 01:12 PM (GMT)
So what is the best zombie movie of all time?

I have only seen a few - night of the living dead, the res evil movies, dawn of the dead remake, shawn of the dead and 28 days later.

Of those I think 28 days wins followed closely by Shawn of the dead.

However I like all those movies - no matter how cheesy and horrible they are as movies. I like more cheesy in a movie than on a margaretta pizza ;)

However I liked 28 days because it wasn't cheesy :P (and for other reasons too - like having dr who in it ;) )

If you wanna get technical about it, 28 Days Later... isn't really a zombie movie - they're more like enraged flesh-eaters.

I don't Evil Dead counts because they're not so much zombies as possessed people. So I go with Shaun of the Dead. So good I've seen it ten times.

yeah that's true but I guess I wanted to include all movies with zombie like people in them.

I hardly watch Zombie movies, but Shaun of the Dead was definately the best one I have seen.

I'll go with the Dawn of the Dead remake. The fast zombies and the fact they had a decent sized budget to work with made it a very exciting action fest. Shaun of the Dead was also brilliant.

As for 28 Days Later...well, I felt the first two thirds of the film were great but there was something about the ending third that was just a bit dissapointing. Still a good movie though.

Regardless I like every zombie movie I have seen so far. From DOTD to Resident Evil Apocalypse. What can I say...I just like zombie movies.

My favourite is the original 1978 Dawn of the Dead, it has a good amount of gore, much of it which still looks decent today and a subtle sense of humour. Honourable mentions go to Day of the Dead, Shaun of the Dead, 28 Days Later, Dawn of the Dead Remake and Zombie Flesh Eaters which features a zombie doing battle with a real life Tiger Shark! Truly the greatest goddamn sequence in cinema history!

Zombie movies which suck the big one:

Resident Evil - Just plain craptacular.
Zombie Holocaust - It features maybe 5 fucking zombies in the whole film, and they don't even kill anyone. How in the fuck is that a holocaust?! It's the cannibal tribes people who do all of the killing.

I'm off to see Land of the Dead on Tuesday, I hope it lives up to the other films in the series :D

I still rather Night of the Living Dead to the other Dead films. It's so well paced and plotted, especially the ending.

Dawn of the Dead, the re-make, almost topped it, though, and probably would've if it weren't for the last 1/2 hour.

Yeah, Night of the Living Dead is definitely my favourite! It's fucking awesome. I must put it on my iriver sometime.

I don't really rate the Dawn of the dead re-make. It was too trashy and meaningless for me. Especially when you compare it to the original. The row of houses without a road at the start is pretty cool. I laughed out loud when I first saw it in the cinema and people looked at me funny.

28 Days is ok, zombies are good and it had it's moments but it just lacks the depth of Romero. Speaking of which Land of the Dead is a good watch, maybe a little mainstream with it's political "underbelly". Not really as cutting as his older ones, but good shite non the less.

By far Shaun of the Dead

I saw a double of Land of the Dead and Shaun of the Dead last weekend. Since it was the premiere of LotD, they had Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright there to introduce them. They introduced Shaun as a tribute to Romero.

After watching both of them, I think they got it the wrong way around. Land really didn't work for me at all. I'm still waiting for anyone on Hyper to discuss it with, but if anyone wants to discuss why they think it's good here I'd really appreciate it, because I can only assume I missed something. I don't think I missed the political underbelly either, but maybe I only picked up on part of that or something.

10- Undead.
A neat little Oz flick with some awesome gore and a splash of sci' fi'.

9- Stacy.
This is about as close to high art as zombie films will ever get. Japan has churned out some neat films featuring the undead, but this would have to be the best.

8- Return of the Living Dead.
Comedy, horror and gore mixed perfectly. Also introduced the concept of zombies eating brains. Some fucking killer lines in this ("Send more medics").

7- 28 Days Later.
The focus of the film isn't even really the zombies, but that doesn't stop it from being a deserving entry. The final act tends to polarise, but it worked for me.

6- Dead Alive (Brain Dead).
Honestly, has there ever been more blood in a film? Some awesome sequences here and a nasty streak of humour. Love it.

5- Dawn of the Dead.
Romero's classic hits the midway point on my list. I like it a lot, and Savini works wonders. The Argento/Goblin cut may be even better (if not just longer).

4- Re-Animator.
Herbert West is a genius. Some awesome zombie sequnces in this film and Yuzna brings a slick sense of style. Some of the funniest moments from any zombie film, ever.

3- Shaun of the Dead.
Spot on homage. Funny, moving, gory. Enough said, really.

2- The Evil Dead.
One of my all time favourite films. This bad boy has it all in the form of gore, and a sharp sense of humour keeps it fun throughout. Can't trust that shrubbery.

1- Day of the Dead.
A dark horse pick, but ultimately the one zombie film that is infinitely revisitable. The gore and SFX are second to none, and the characters actually work for me (despite their stereotype-ness). This obviously works better in context with the entire Romero catalogue, and is truly rewarding for the dedicated. Bub is the icing on the cake.

...And you know that it is a hard list to crack if I can't find room for Night of the Living Dead or any Fulci flick. But I stand by it.

;)

I finally got around to seeing Land of the Dead last night, but I'm still not exactly sure what I thought about it, do I'd like to go and see it again to try and get a feel for it, so to speak.

Since I'm a lazy git, here's what I said about the film on Hyper:

QUOTE
Whilst I enjoyed the film, I for some reason left the cinema somewhat disappointed. I think part of the reason for this is that it breaks away from the traditional mould of the series, which see's a small number of survivors surround by zombies in a small, enclosed space. Although in a way, this still takes place in Land..., but on a much larger scale. Though I applaud Romero for breaking away from the mould and giving something a bit different a try. Secondly, the film felt like more of an action flick than a horror, with no real frights. And finally, the film was severely lacking in the gore department, which could be attributed to the film having to be tond down for a wider audience than the previous films.

That said, the film featured the best looking zombies ever! Major props to the makeup department, the variety of zombies was great, and the varying states of decay has been taken a notch further than any of the other films in the series. I also really dug the progression of the zombies, their ability to use tools, being able to carry out actions that they performed in life, and most of all, their increasing ability to expereince emotions. Top stuff! I also really dug the general look of the film, gg the cinematography team!

I actually noticed the Simon Pegg zombie, which was pretty cool. You can see him in the scene when the butcher zombie hacks at the makeshift wooden wall to reveal the dangling zombies. He's in amongst the crowd, just behind the butcher zombie. And it was good to see Tom Savini with yet another cameo, and as a zombified version of his character in Dawn no less!  Also, I swear Bub made a cameo too!

And finally, that Asia Argento is one fine piece of ass, in a crack junkie kinda way! Although she doesn't have your typically attractive face, she definitely has some sort of unconventional beauty. And she reminds me of Brody Dalle.

Zombies are the most bad-ass characters ever.

I don't watch zombie flicks very often, but it's definitely Shaun of the Dead.

Where to start? Okay, it's one of the funniest films of all time, Simon Pegg is a genius, the directing was great and looked really slick, had a surprising amount of blood and gore for a comedy and just... damn! It was such a good movie, one of the very few films that you can watch over and over again and never get bored of it.

And I liked the 3rd act of 28 Days Later. I actually preferred it to the first two.

The original Dawn Of The Dead was the real deal, a very apocalyptic and bleak atmosphere, and a sense of isolation among the four main characters kept in proper perspective as they slowly became the focal point of the whole film as they shut the outside world out completely in their bid to create their own little corner they could call their own. Great storytelling!

Mr Vampire... because the vampires hold out their arms like zombies... j/k

I'd have to say 28 Days Later... but I will admit that it was the empty city-scapes that did it. There was something about an empty Piccadilly that was really eerie. And eerie-ness is a unique thing in a zombie movie, I feel...
