Title: Meteos
Description: Best game on DS?

borgster101 - August 12, 2005 02:41 AM (GMT)
Brother wanted to get this, so we placed an order at DVDCrave, since they had the US version :) . From what I have seen it's quite a deep game, with lots of unlockable content, replayability and wireless multiplayer modes :) .

The game uses the DS functions well, you can play either with the touch screen or the buttons, but if you play with the buttons you wont get very far since the Meteos move down the screen very fast, and hence it's much easier to use a stylus.

I believe the game is set for a December local release (which is suprisingly long), but yeah it's indeed a great game, it's made by the developers of Lumines (I think), I havent played Lumines, but apparantly you PSP owners feel that it's fun and addictive and from what I've seen and played of Meteos, it looks to be just as addicitive and fun.

I got this yesterday and already my enthusiasm for it has died considerably. This is what I posted over at Hyper.

Meteos is like a one night stand with a beautiful woman. At first it is all fun and games and you don't think things could get any better... then you quickly find out that you are right. Things get worse and the following morning you see her in the cold hard light of day and realise that she actually isn't all that interesting to talk to and without her make up she isn't that attractive either.

Okay perhaps I'm being a bit TOO harsh on Meteos but what we have here is a good, not exceptional, puzzle game that is let down by poor pacing and a control set up that almost breaks the game.

The premise of Meteos is gold, I like the idea considerably but it is one that only allows for quick bursts of play rather than settling down into a long term game trance. The primary problem is the game's speed. It isn't that meteos is overly difficult, it isn't. Yes you need to become good at the game to get the high scores but progression is not particularly challenging. The problem is that on certain stages the speed is so fast that you stop employing any form of real strategy and start shifting blocks around with little goal and hoping for the best. This is particularly prominant on those levels which feature screwy world physics where horizontals wont work without step jumps, etc. It also forces a trial and error style gameplay where you pretty much write off your first game simply to discover which methods work on those worlds and then repeat with that knowledge since the time taken to experiment means that by the time you have it figured the meteos are already threatening to fill your screen.

The next problem is scribble play. Put simply it can be more productive from a screen clearing point of view to just scribble your stylus really fast on your touch screen. When you make that discovery it makes the game feel like a button masher fighter... why try strategy when random scribbling works just as well?

All things considered Meteos is fun, and if you are hungry for a puzzler, worth spending your cash on it. But where Lumines has provided well over 100 hours worth of gameplay and I still find myself coming back to it, Meteos I think I'm largely done with. I'll still pull it out from time to time because it is fun but it is not the game that revitalised my DS the way I had hoped it would.

Looks like I might have to see if Osu! Tatakae! Quendan! is up to the challenge.

It seems people either think that Meteos is better than Lumies or vica-versa...for example, Tyco from Penny-Aracade was told by a friend that Meteos was good, but Lumies was better. Aready a Lumies fan, he got Meteos anyway, and turned out liking it more than Lumies!
Similar situations with some of the reviews I've read as well.

Hmm, different strokes for different folks it seems.

At least we know Q Entertainment are good though, making both Lumines and Meteos, then having people fight about which is better.

Sadly I don't have my DS yet or played Meteos yet. :(

The shame for me though is that while I think Meteos is good... I don't think it is THAT good. As stated in my post... I'm done with it. Not so done with it I wanna get rid of it but tired of it enough that I'm not planning on touching it for some time.

ba-doom-TING!

Yeah, I'll probably pick this up when I get a DS.(later this year methinks)

I can understand your comments there Elprez (especially the 'scribble play', but it can save your arse when your about to die), that said though I find it quite addictive, my brother seems to think so to. Granted I havent played Lumines, but yeah it's a cool game.

dave_cool31 - August 22, 2005 05:49 AM (GMT)
I haven't played meteos yet, but I think it looks like a pretty cool game.

If I have to wait 'til December to even play it though then that'll be a bit of a dissapointment

Hell yes, I just can't put it down. Though that may all change if I decide to nab Advance Wars: Dual Strike this weekend, but Meteos is at least a fairly original concept.

bump

apparently Meteos has been released! I was just on www.nintendo.com.au and they said it's out now! Too bad I have no moneys...

Well this is another title I plan on getting for the DS, but after reading ElPrez's recount, i'm not particularly looking forward to it anymore. IMO, Lumines is the best puzzler i've played, bar none, and i've generally got the same gaming tastes as Prez. I'll most likely buy it (who am I kidding), but i'm not looking as forward to it as I used to.

borgster101 - November 26, 2005 03:30 AM (GMT)
For those that have played both, some people seem to prefer Meteos whilst others prefer Lumines, having not played or seen Lumines I can't really say.
