Title: The Island
Description: Bay goes all out with eye-candy again.

Well I saw the film tonight and it was about what I expected it to be, tremendous eye candy with little regard to important character development/driven scenes. It certainly wasn't really bad by any means, don't think Pearl Harbour, and was probably one of Michael Bay's best films yet despite the fact it was still average at best.

The film started off well and Bay obviously learnt how to capture the casual viewer in the first ten minutes, but at the half-way point I was beginning to feel cheated, because it had essentially drifted along into a cat-and-mouse chase for the entire time. It got to the point where the plot was kept vague simply because once it was all exposed very few would actually care less about the whole thing. The "clever" story it had attempted to build at the beginning was nothing more than a hook to allow forty minutes of glossy effects and predictable Bay highway action sequences.

If Bay is only good at one thing it is certainly his ability to handle over-the-top action sequences though. The Island is definitely not short of these either, with a massive budget, Bay has certainly had his way with some frantic set-pieces. He goes so overboard concentrating on his special effects and action scenes though that he leaves the audience exhausted and when it comes time to deliver a solid character driven scene once again falls flat on his face. The guy seriously doesn't know how to bring out anything in actors and he certainly had some talent to play with here, with the likes of McGregor, Johansson, and Bean all staring.

It may sound like I'm being overly critical, but this is far from the clever science-fiction film it has been labelled by some. The simple cloning elements are merely a novelty factor, masking another basic high-budget action core. Good for some blind, dumb fun all the same.

I may have been remotely interested in watching it if the ad wasn't more or less a summary of the entire film, making the act of watching it seem rather pointless.

Yeah, the trailer and tv spots are shockers.

"From the creator of Pearl Harbor.."

Who in their right mind would be excited over a movie would that sort of catch-line?! :D

I saw this movie a couple of nights ago with a friend. Likewise with you DC, I found the first half quite inspiring until I started dozing off in the second half. Sure there were some impressive scenes on occasions, but it completely lost the point at one stage. Think Tom Hank's Castaway

My friend however thought it was a terrific film, bordering the questions of
"are we controlled? what is real?"

An alright movie in my opinion, but nothing more

Good in so bad it's good kind of way. If I wasn't entertained by it's stupidity it would be the worst film of the year.
