Title: Sin City
Description: They call me payne, max payne

Sin City, a film based off graphic novels by Frank Miller, can be summed up in just one word, "wow".
Filmed in classic 'film noir' style, this movie tells the story of three 'heroes', trying to do their bit in the seedy cesspool their city has become, and the consequences of going up against the people who make it so. The bulk of the movie is told in narrative form, the character being portrayed acting as the voice of the story, which is exhilarating, yet grim.
The facet of the movie which stands out most, is definately the style in which the story is portrayed. The film noir style, laced with colours to exemplify certain characteristics of characters, sets the mature and dark tone of the movie exceptionally. This is complemented further, by the deep and brooding voices used by the narratives throughout the story.
The story itself is very dramatic, if not over the top at parts, but fits in so well with the style, that it is easily forgiven.
For those of you who have played Max Payne, you'll feel oddly familiar with the the style of the movie, as it represents it exceptionally.
Definately one of the better movies i've seen this year, if not in my entire lifetime. Yes, it's just that unique, that is completely sucks you in, and spits you out at the end feeling completely satisfied.
Despite it not being a movie suited for everybody, I really urge you to go and watch it, as it's a movie you're either likely to love, or hate.

I really want to see this. It just screams "watch me" imo. I've seen the trailer and it does look interesting as it's got a quite a unique mix of stories going on.
It'll also be interesting to see Froddo again... ;)
rampaging_geek - July 18, 2005 05:48 AM (GMT)
This time Frodo eats prostitutes. :D
Excellent movie.
_MetalliX_ - July 18, 2005 06:00 AM (GMT)
I thought it was quite shocking at parts, but its definitely a film that needs to be seen twice to be fully appreciated.
Plus Jessica Alba has never looked so hot... :D

Dude it's not Frodo eating prostitutes - it's Harry Potter!!
"when Wizards go bad..."
Sweet movie too - I really liked it!

I agree, an excellent movie and I must say I have not enjoyed a movie so much for quite a while. It is great to see a movie offer something different and not just churn out another predictable Adam Sandler comedy, or typical world is going to end movie. Sin City is stylish and full of substance, depth, and unmatched character. A must see movie.

Just saw Sin City this afternoon and I must say I was quite impressed. It's a movie that is over the top, stylish, extremely violent and very different from anything I have seen at the cinema before. Basically the best movie of 2005 so far.

Shit film. Was I the only one who found the plot completely stupid? Guy gets shot 17 times, left for dead, somehow comes back to life, gets revenge, shoots himself. BLAH.

Oh my God! Spoilerzz!!
I agree with Hello, take away the stylish effects and what are you left with? Nothing! that's what.

I thought it was good, but hardly groundbreaking like a lot of people are making it out to be.

It's the style of film. It's supposed to be a little bit unbelievable and dramatic.

Screw the style of the film... its the style of the comic. I've never seen a movie so faithful to its source material. Sin City is a comic fan's wet dream come true.
[DZ] - August 1, 2005 08:42 AM (GMT)
It is faithful to the comics. But I'm not a fan of the comic so fuck that, I didn't find anything special about Sin City. I hate Josh Hartnett.
I only watched cos it looked great and Alba plays a stripper.
I wanna watch Doom: The Moofie.

people think it's ground breaking? wtf - it's clearly based entirely on other genres - ie. film noir and comic book style action. I saw nothing ground breaking about it.
I just really loved the style and the attitude. I love film noir and there is basically none made these days - such a cool style of film.
I thought the plot was great - all the corruption and violence and sex etc. really lived up to the name. I've never read the comics. I would say about 99% of action movies have unrealistic plots - I think that's part of the appeal of them. It's the "movie magic". I guess I prefer "arty" independent movies most of the time but I thought Sin City is probably the best hollywood movie I've seen since Fight Club.

Visual and style-wise.
Manny M - August 2, 2005 03:26 AM (GMT)
Well film noir is hardly anything new, but like beast said, it's a style which you don't see thrown around often, and because of that, it felt very fresh.
ElPresidente - August 2, 2005 09:13 AM (GMT)
It isn't just the noir feel but that kind of digital enhancement to the visuals is groundbreaking and has never been seen in film before. The closest we've seen was Dick Tracy. Big ups to my man Rodriguez.
~DC - August 2, 2005 12:36 PM (GMT)
Roddy is a mixed bag. He has shot some truely stylish films but has yet to deliver anything truely groundbreaking to make him be considered a superb director in my book. I felt this evident from Sin City, the fact that Tarantino's scene had the best structure and overall direction in the whole film.
Saying that the film was pretty good. Hopefully the sequel(s) will be even better.
BrotherEstapol - August 2, 2005 01:07 PM (GMT)
Which scene was done by Tarantino?
~DC - August 3, 2005 03:21 AM (GMT)
The drive to the pits scene in which Dwight talks with Jackie Boy. He also had came up with the idea of Jackie Boy's speech impairment after his throat was slit and Dwight speaking his internal monologue instead of dubbing it at a later period.
OldSkOoL - August 10, 2005 06:37 PM (GMT)
One of the best scenes in the movie I thought. Benicio Del Toro did it so well.
Iroquois - August 11, 2005 05:31 AM (GMT)
I thought this was pretty good. While incredibly unrealistic, it's not meant to be - since when are comics realistic?
8/10

Bumpage!
Well I just watched the movie now, as it has come out on DVD and wow, the style and use of colour is great. I find myself still thinking about the movie, which is a good thing for me, as well as trying to comprehend and grasp / re check the events of the movie, which gladly weren't sequential, although it does leave me a little confused, but I will probably gather my thoughts in the morning.
As a movie it's great, whilst the DVD only contains a making of documentary, nothing special really.
8/10 for and one of my top 3 movies of the year (Batman Begins and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang are the other two).
auhsor - November 30, 2005 03:43 PM (GMT)
I saw it the other day and enjoyed it, although I was interupted a few times through it which interupted the flow even more than is done already in the movie.
I liked the style of it alot even if the story was lacking a little. I didn't really like the end. Also, did I hear correctly that there is going to be a sequel. I only saw the page on IMDG, and I'm not sure if thats real or not.
Lazlow - November 30, 2005 06:31 PM (GMT)
IMDB, and yeah a seuqal is in the works. It is based on some other of Frank Miller's graphic novels. The only continuation fromt he first movie that we know of so far is Clive Owen/Rosario Dawson's story.
Hopefully, they'll expand upon Josh Hartnett's hitman character.
