Title: MIDI Converters
Description: MP3 -> Midi

Hey, does anyone know of there are any programs that let you convert MP3's (audio in general really) to MIDI files? I know someone who's got a polyphonic phone, so I want to convert some of their songs into MIDI so they can use them as ringtones. Who wants to pay Jamester or any of those annoying companies money for a cheap midi file!

Anyone feel free to correct me on this one, but I'm pretty sure it would be near impossible to convert any sort of recording into a MIDI file.

You'd have to have some VERY advanced software since you'd be converting recorded sounds, into sheet-music.(which is what MIDI's are basically)

Maybe if the recording was very a simple one....even then you'd have to have some clever software doing the converting...

Yeah, I tried having a look a while back, and came up with nothing. They basically build the midi files from the ground up.

Just so you have three people telling you the exact same thing... no, you won't find a mp3 -> MIDI program out there.

As Estapol points out a MIDI is nothing more than than the digital equivalent of sheet music. It simply tells the computer "Play this note with this instrument" and that is all. Considering how hard it is to get a program just to filter out voices in a song the task of picking the melody, extracting all the notes and then assigning the correct instruments... near impossible.

As mentioned, MIDI files are built from the ground up. You would be better off finding the sheet music to the song you want and getting a MIDI sequencing program.

Or finding them already done by some other pathetic fool ;)

Yeah, there's alot of Midi files around on the net. ;)

Somthing I did to get some ringtones, was ripp raw music files(.SPC files) from SNES roms, then converted them to midi files and chucked them on my phone. ;)

Ah ok, thanks guys. Ah well, tough luck for them. :P I can just chuck an MP3 into my phone.

Was wondering, are there any programs that work the other way, midi to mp3?

Well there are programs out there that convert MP3's into Midi's. I used one a while ago, and the results are pretty bad. I think it works best with just a clean melody or something. Try one here: http://www.allformp3.com/mp3_other/mtm.htm

But yeah, you are better off just searching for midi's on the net. They are everywhere.
