Title: The Cinema Experience
_MetalliX_ - July 3, 2005 07:36 AM (GMT)
I haven't had much time for the cinema in the immediate past due to it being my HSC year. So it was a real treat to go see War of the Worlds in all its glory at my local cinema. However, I had forgotten or perhaps never realised how rude my fellow viewers have become. The formal etiquette at the cinemas is to remain silent, turn off your mobile phones and enjoy the movie, but what I was forced to endure whilst watching War of the Worlds was far from this. A group of guys behind me found it necessary to let loose on some smart arse remarks throughout the film, even to the point where they would fart quite loudly and openingly throughout the film, lucky for my cold. There were a bunch of girls at the front of the cinema who were laughing hysterically and loudly presumably not at the somber film. This then resulted in a solid minute of "Shutup slut!" "No you shutup!". On top of this, it seemed as though the mobile phone rule has gone totally out the window, people openly taking calls and actually letting a phone ring presumably because they don't want to talk to the caller. At the conclusion of the film, quite an understandably outraged middle-aged man through insults and threats toward those beside him and around him who would not shutup throughout the entire film, but this only began after a mother and her yound son were insulted after she expressed her disgust at their constant talking. This really was a waste of $10.30 to have to put up with this throughout an otherwise great film.
So now its your turn, discuss your pre, during and/or post cinema experiences...

Well there was this one time when me and my gf went into a cinema that was completely empty and we hardly saw any of Miss Congeliality (sp?) 2. An experience I'll never forget ;)
Sounds like you had a rough time, I've had those sort of encounters, but never all at one movie
~DC - July 3, 2005 07:47 AM (GMT)
Someone brought a baby into Batman Begins on the weekend. The darn thing didn't keep quiet, but at least the parents actually took it outside numerous times.
Generally I've had a pretty good run though. I delierately choose to sit away from groups of people when at the cinema, where possible, thus I haven't had a movie ruined due to others talking, etc.
evO - July 3, 2005 08:00 AM (GMT)
I tend to look for seats where there aren't many people around. I don't usually have any bad experiences, and you will probably find that sometimes i'm on the other end of the stick :whistling:
kami - July 3, 2005 08:17 AM (GMT)
I hardly ever go to watch films, and when I do, it tends to be in the middle of a weekday when there usually aren't too many other people around. Otherwise, can't say I've had too many bad cinema experiences.
cd2 - July 3, 2005 09:24 AM (GMT)
This is why I like to the movies near the end of it run that way hardly anyone is there.
DJ-Civic - July 3, 2005 01:46 PM (GMT)
Well I haven't experienced such a situation.... yet, but I do have other stories from cinemas. First was the time that the movie went out of focus for no reason. Nobody was saying anthing so i thought my eyes had gone. :P I asked my sister if it was the movie, and she nodded. Everyone then starts shouting "FOCUS!". About 5 mins later, it went back to normal and the movie was rewound back.
Then there's the time when I was watching Bruce Almighty when the lights went out. Then the back-up lights come on and I go outside to have a look. As I come back EVERYONE looks at me... and I'm like WTF? I then shouted "The lights went out!!!" and they ask me "What do we do?" Wish I could've used a smartass remark. :P

Once again, you were not alone. The projectionist was waiting...intently...watching...LOVING IT.
Um, I once spent the first 10 minutes of a movie, 'Rush Hour', getting my chair kicked by some little PUNK. I told him to 'piss off', but he wouldn't, and I wasn't going to move. Good thing was, that for some reason the little bastard vomited after the 10 minute mark. We pointed and laughed. Good times.

All of my experiences have been pretty good, I can't really think of anything notable.
HamburgerTrain - July 4, 2005 12:46 AM (GMT)
The last movie I saw at the cinemas was Batman Begins and there was a stupid bitch who kept on answering her mobile and talking really loudly (on purpose of course), then she started laughing and flirting with all her stupid friends. Everyone kept on telling her to shutup and eventually she got kicked out.
Thats one of the reasons I almost never go out to the movies anymore. It's highway robbery for the prices you pay at Hoyts, so these days I just wait for the DVD's to come out and I either hire or buy them.
thebigm - July 4, 2005 02:24 AM (GMT)
I guess this was a while back, but I still remember it to this day, when I went and watched I Robot (think you were the _MetalliX_) and the cinema was actually packed with people our age. Throughout the whole movie there was lasers being pointed at the screen, large scale discussions and I think there was even food fights.
borgster101 - July 4, 2005 02:48 AM (GMT)
I don't go to the cinema that often and thus havent had many of these 'experiences', when I saw Batman Begins, someone's mobile phone was ringing but it stopped pretty quickly, slightly annoying. I really cant understand why people leave there phones one in the cinema, at least put the phone on silent, shessh!
evO - July 4, 2005 03:03 AM (GMT)
If i get the urge to be annoying, i'll put it on loud for about 5 minutes.
If no one calls in that time, i'll put it back on silent ^_^. I don't get that urge too often though :whistling:

Yeah, that is basically what I do too, although nothing beats seeing a movie on the big screen.
_MetalliX_ - July 4, 2005 06:07 AM (GMT)
Honestly, the ONLY way to see War of the Worlds would have to be on the big screen, but choose a time slot when the cinema would be mostly empty.

Especially if you're in the front row and watching the first bit of Moulin Rouge @_@
JJJames7 - July 4, 2005 11:09 AM (GMT)
One time, the cinema was completly empty apart from a fourteen year old looking kid and his dad, and three mates up the very back. The three guys were flicking m&ms and shit around the cinema, and totally by accident in the darkness, one of the kids flicks an m&m ALL THE WAY down to the bottom row of the cinema. Well, the dad up the front marched up to the top and starts yelling about him and his son wanting to have some bonding or some shit, and one of the friends later apologized for his two friends behaviour.
Anyway, I was the one who flicked the m&m and hit the bald dad. But I felt pretty bad about it, I mean, how the hell did it reach him? I am still mates with the person who apologized, but we hate the other one, who left our school. Horrible influence.
By the way, the movie was SWAT. We liked it because there was a Linkin Park Song. :argh:
Serpentine - July 4, 2005 11:22 AM (GMT)
I don't go very often anymore. The only movie I have seen at the cinema in the past couple years is Star Wars 3.
The beauty of having a huge 121cm telly and awesome surround sound makes it very easy tio have a better experience at home.
Gotta admit though, am glad I saw Ep 3 on the big cinema screen.
I once did some photography work for a local cinema in exchange for a gold pass. Was pretty cool went and saw just about every movie for about 2 years. Also got to hang out in the projection booth if I wanted to.
Stopped doing it because the gold pass was instead of getting paid and was getting sick of watching movies (I know it sounds strange).
St@ckboy - July 4, 2005 12:20 PM (GMT)
I've got no problems telling someone to shutup in the film, going so far as to get out of my seat to tell them or to go get management.
Don't waste my money, or more importantly to me, my time.

Yeah I know :D , having a large widescreen at home + surround sound is a pretty decent way to enjoy the cinema experience without the annoyances.
This is why I only go to the cinema if there is a movie showing that I really want to see, and dont want to wait for the DVD release :) .

As a gift to my Dad for his birthday I'll be putting together a home theatre for him. When he designed our house he made a room which was going to become a theatre room, its basically just an enourmous lounge room with a huge bare wall to project a film onto. But he has never gotten around to doing it, so I thought I would do it for him. We already have quite a good television so I think I'm going to go with a projector instead. I can probably get one from my uncle cheap because he's in the business. So hopefully before the end of the year I will have quite a modest home theatre. :)
If all works well, I'll also have a bar in the corner of the thearte room! :D

Bags: playing games on your home theatre system :P
Well with the advent of Digital TV being the norm soon, I am considering getting a Hi Def Panasonic Projector to either put into my study or one of the TV rooms along with Foxtel IQ to really enjoy teh goodness :D
That and to play next gen games at 720P :D

Bump... excuse the double post, but if I simply editing don't think anyone would've noticed the extra information.
Finally watched Batman Begins today, and I almost missed it because of a bus that never came, and I was stranded for 30mins, costing me valuable beakfast time. Finally made it to the movie with a few seconds to spare. I thought it was going to be a shocking experience since everyone was talking so loudly right until the movie began, at which point it wasn't too bad, except for a few kids behind, one of which must've seen the movie before and started saying wait for it "this will happen" at the end of the movie. (Used this will happen since I didn't want to ruin it for you).
Other than that I enjoyed the movie, but not the pre movie experience.

Don't use a bare wall, it won't look good as good. Get a proper screen that uses the right material because it will reflect the light much better and the colours will look a lot more natural. We've got one at home that my Dad and I put together and it really makes a difference it only takes like an hour to put together but as I said before it makes a huge difference.

Let's see. Back on topic.
I had a bad cinema experience a few years ago, seeing "Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star". Basically, I watched it with this "Kids Club", for Primary School Student ages. Which meant I still could go in Year 7 <_<. Anyway, this group is around 50% 5-8 y/o's, and the rest about my age. Anyway, when we get to the cinema, basically, it was all 4 of the "Kids Club" groups at once. Which meant about 50/90 Students were 6-8 y/o loud mouths. Basically, they laughed openly at anything funny, and they couldn't get over it for the next several minutes. Great! </sarcasm>. It sucked hard anyway.
-----
Good Cinema experience was a High School "House Night" for some other movie. Anyway, we saw it with a youth group, AKA Druggies currently being counselled. So this song plays, and the girls from our school start doing loud kareoke. One of the Ex-Druggies goes "Can you shut the fuck up Ms. Jukebox!". Funny stuff :P

When I went to see WotW, there was a really annoying family there. They came in the movie late, start talking really loud, make smartass comments about everything ("AHAHAHAHAHAHA! the son dodged the ball! AHAHAHAHAHA! What a loser! HAHAHAHAHAHA! I reckon I could kick tom cruise's ass!), throwing popcorn at people in the cinema (10 points if you hit the man with the wig), etc. But there was a big muscular man with them, so everyone in the cinema didn't want to tell them to shut the f**k up. After the movie, I saw one of the dudes in the cinema, walk past the family and under he's breath say "f**king movie spoileres". It was hilarious.

I saw War of the Worlds the other day and have no complaints about the other people. It also happened to be the first time I've seen a movie by myself. =|
Anyway, 'twas a good movie. :)

I've only ever seen a movie by myself once, and that was xXx, which i had already seen anyway.

I saw Fantastic Four today. Bad idea. There was a holiday thing, where all the kids went to the movies as a group. When the movie was on, if anything remotely funny happened the kids would be like:
"AHAHAHAAHAHAHAAHAHAHAAHAHAHAAHAHAHAAHAHAHAAHAHAHAAHAHAHA
AHAHAHAAHAHAHAAHAHAHAAHAHAHAAHAHAHAAHAHAHAAHAHAHAAHAHAHA
AHAHAHAAHAHAHAAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The rock-man got cream on his face! Cream!!!!!!" 1 minute late "THAT WAS THE FUNNIEST THING EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!"
God, I hate little kids in the cinema.

Meh, I watch movies by myself all the time. I tend to not see it as a social thing given you're generally not meant to be talking during the movie. In fact, i almost feel like watching Bewitched today BY MYSELF :D

I've never seen a movie by myself. I only ever went to movies for something to do when I was in that age where I wanted to go out and do stuff, but was too young to party constantly, or whatever.
I always saw movies more as a social entertainment thingy and now I never go...

The only time I remember seeing a movie by myself (with no friends or anything) was The Mummy Returns. It was on my last unemployment free day before I had to start working for the first time. The cinema was pretty empty too despite being a new movie at the time. It was the middle of the day on a school day though.
My 1st gf (not the one I mentioned on the previous page) & I once went into Grand Cinemas in Bunbury, only to find out the entire cinema (that's the lobby area) was completely empty. Both of us finding this eerily creepy, we walked back out and did something else instead.
