Title: Things I hate about the gaming community

/backslash - June 6, 2005 08:14 AM (GMT)
Loads of geeks bragging about what great TV's they have, how many imported games they own & the amount of Mario posters they have up on their walls.

It's all a bit sad really, isn't it?

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to have the space & money to be able to have a nice room devoted to my gaming needs, but do I really need to show it off to the entire world? No!

Another thing I hate are gamers who refuse to try other formats. There's a few people who I work with who are PC gamers and they refuse to play console games. What is wrong with these people? You're missing out on some great games you crazy fools!

Hello - June 6, 2005 08:19 AM (GMT)
I aint really part of a gaming community in real life, the closest I come to some sort of community are these forums and hyper. I must say, the non-HARDCORE gamers amongst the forumers seem to be far more easy going, and much less wanky, than the HARDCORE gamers.

rampaging_geek - June 6, 2005 08:38 AM (GMT)
Console gamers don't seem all that bad to me. However, the hardcore PC nerds I know obviously have some kind of issue. Apparently you're not cool unless you have 12 monitors and 5 mice. Stupidest thing I've ever seen are these guys trying to out-do eachother by seeing who can play their crappy techno louder over their PC's sound system.

evO - June 6, 2005 09:05 AM (GMT)
Hey! I'm no hardcore PC gamer, yet i have 4 monitors and about 15 mice and about 6 computers. And i like techno too :P. I just play it on my awesome loungeroom stereo, thankyou very much.

rampaging_geek - June 6, 2005 09:57 AM (GMT)
No, I meant 12 monitors and 5 mice...ON ONE COMPUTER.

Cubeoid - June 6, 2005 11:53 AM (GMT)
All this PC nerd talk reminds me of a friend of mine who built his own computer with stickers, neon lights and a spray painted case. He's now ordered three different cases off ebay in about the past 2 months.

Also I've also noticed that the hardcore gamers are kind of wank. I had a few friends around the other week and we played system link Halo 2. Two of these guys took control of setting everything up. They then proceeded to choose a level the other two of us hadn't ever played and teamed up with each other. The two hardcore gamers against the casual gamers. Safe to say we got beaten something shocking but all during the game they were talking back and forth like:-

"Hey you go grab the..."

"Oh and then?"

"Yeah yeah and we'll..."

"Oh yeah!"

They had all these strategies planned out from hundreds of hours over X-Box Live. Then they repeatedly said how good they were for winning.

In conclusion most the hardcore gamers I know are wankers. :P

Let's not forget the Leeroy Jenkins movie, someone actually crunches numbers and spits out a percentage (32.33...repeating of course) of survival.

Leeroy was on the right track. "Let's do this!"

f15active - June 6, 2005 12:47 PM (GMT)
Hahahaha, that movie is gold, that almost made me buy WoW, just to do that kind of thing to people. Well...no, but it sure would be funny.

Sytadel - June 6, 2005 04:13 PM (GMT)
At least he has chicken.

[DZ] - June 6, 2005 10:46 PM (GMT)
Not all hardcores are wankers. I consider myself hardcore, I game pretty much every day, and my pick up and play abilities are peaked (consoles). But I'm no wanker. You guys think I'm a wanker?? :/

Manny M - June 7, 2005 12:41 AM (GMT)
Well... your fanboy attitude toward anything Sony, "may" give that impression...

Easy there, Manny, you wouldn't want to break the rules and accidentally insult DZ in a round about way. <_<

Manny M - June 7, 2005 12:46 AM (GMT)
I'm trying to figure out whether that was sarcasm or not....

[DZ] - June 7, 2005 01:18 AM (GMT)

Look, just because some wanker users in some other fucking thread said that I was some kinda "personality" on these forums and that you shouldn't insult me for the good of these forums doesn't mean anything! :|

On topic, there is fanboyism in everyone of us. We all have a fave game on a fave platform, you can't deny that. I just like to express it on these boards, strongly, firmly... with lots of swearing... and bashing....

*awkward silence*
<_<

borgster101 - June 7, 2005 01:27 AM (GMT)
I actually don't really know any hardcore gamers personally, hence most of my time spent gaming is single player, I do have the multiplayer bashes with my brother though since he too is into gaming. The people I know that are play games are all casual gamers, who buy some crappy games, I try to talk them out of the crapness and sometimes suceed, but usually they think I'm crazy for playing Mario, .

The only hardcore gamers I met in person, was when I went to the Nintendo SuperChallenge last year, most of the guys there where hardcore Nintendo gamers though, it was funny of the ignorance in hating the other consoles. I remember we were talking about MGS Twin Snakes on GCN, and then I said oh have you played MGS2, I've got it on Xbox, they all looked at me funny, and one of the guys, said Xbox sux why would I want to play a crappy Xbox game.

I said, dude, you know that Twin Snakes gameply is based on MGS2, but he was like "but the story is crap, so it sucks balls". I wonder what he would say about MGS3  .

Although, not all of those Nintendo geeks were ignorant fools, another guy only owned a GCN but he said the reason was financial, i.e. he can only really afford to buy and support one console, he chose the GCN since he has been a Nintendo fan since the NES, fair enough.

But yeah, in general the people I know in person arent really into gaming, and I guess that's the reason I'm on this gaming forum to discuss gaming with people who share the interest enought to sign up as well.

Well I can pick up and play pretty much anything... I also have 38hours clocked on Counter-Strike this week... Oh and I've been gaming since 1989... I'd consider myself Hardcore. :P

Although, as /Backslash said, I do hate fanboy's who refuse to try anything else then proceed to bash it... Not only are they pissing us off, they are really missing out.

[DZ] - June 7, 2005 04:58 AM (GMT)

88... You were three... Jesus. :P

I know I started gaming when I was 4 as my olds told me... And had photos. :P They couldn't get me off Commander Keen... Sure I rarely made it past level 11 or something like that, but hey, I tried!

TrinityJayOne - June 7, 2005 05:53 AM (GMT)
I don't think I actually got my own console til I was around 8, so I probably started playing games around the same time as Lordage, maybe a year or so later.

The thing that I hate most about the gaming community is the amount of casual gamers that have invaded the scene, although I guess most of us probably think that. It's kinda the same thing with anime, it just seemed better when it had more of a cult following. Sure we get more games (and anime) now, but how much of it is actually good? Back when I had my Mega Drive I could go to VGH, grab just about any game off the shelf and know that I'd love it, but try doing that now. :|

No no, i'm with you.

This is really disturbing though, because just yesterday some guy was playing CS as "Leeroy" and the admin in the server was putting up, in green writing "Leeeerrooooyy Jeeennnkkiiinnnsss". And then you guys bring him up. Wierd.

Lordage - June 7, 2005 06:33 AM (GMT)
Leeroy Jenkins is the funniest WoW video to date, it's classic. :P

Manny M - June 7, 2005 07:01 AM (GMT)
WTF IS that!?

I don't think i've ever seen such a display from people who play a game. "can i have a quick number crunch"... is he serious?!

Now that's what you call a loser.. *ahem*, hardcore gamer.

I have two friends who will fight to the death deabting over computer hardware, and another who is so fond of Nintendo that anything else is blasphemous. What I do hate about the gaming community is the sterotypes which are placed on me by the non-gaming community.

I went to a LAN the other day competing in a Counter-Strike tournament. Now this may seem geeky, but we won and got money out of it so I couldn't care less. What I do hate is that there's this annoying little shit at school who was on the team we beat, and who really cant accept his defeat, despite the fact I don't really give two hoots about Counter-Strike he is constantly walking around whinging about how we somehow cheated during a LAN game...

What is quite a relief is that the gaming community is getting hotter. No longer are we pimply little nerds, but some of us actually look pretty decent.

Actually I wouldn't say that I am blasphemous merely more biased to Nintendo, and I am pretty biased towards PC as well since that is where almost half of my gaming is done. Also I hate havingto deal with everyone saying that Nintendo is "shit" etc. Which is something that really gets on my nerves, and yet all these people talk about the good old days about when they first played a game on Nintendo, and pay out Nintendo now even though they don't even bother to play any games.

I have also taken part in CS competitions, and there is no way i am a nerd :P. I'm a sexy pimp who loves sports and women ^_^.

ROFL! I just watched the Leeroy thingy, god damn that's GOLD!

f15active - June 7, 2005 08:41 AM (GMT)
One thing I hate about anyone at my school that is even slightly into gaming, is their hate of the xbox due to the duke controller. That is the single most comfortable controller I've ever had, and they bitch about it probably due to their piss small hands.

...and they say small hands small...

I was born in 79, been gaming since 84, yet I'm probably the least hardcore on these forums. I'd still like to game, but I don't have time to find out what new games are any good and I sure as shit don't have time for any of this online gaming stuff.

I dont think you can use mics in WoW. Although im not 100% sure on that one.

paulgusta - June 7, 2005 12:27 PM (GMT)
The thing that pisses me off the most is the wanky, elitist PC lot who scorn their peers if the hardware they are using is not the latest 'l33t' 1024mb video card with quintuple anit-aliasing. Those dicks really shit me to tears.

/backslash - June 7, 2005 01:56 PM (GMT)
My friend (who's buying a new computer this week) is a somewhat strange person. 3 years ago he bought the most up to date hardware for his PC gaming needs. Since then, he's only ever bought 2 games (both of them Star Wars titles). He used to play alot of FPS shooters, but only when he was living in Perth with 2 roommates, having multiplayer sessions.

Currently living in a remote area, multiplayer games are now out of question. Now he's buying another top-notch PC with an LCD screen and all that crap, but he never really buys any games for it! And he'd have sessions where he doesn't turn his computer on for weeks. He never buys gaming magazines so he doesn't know what's good&what's crap and he only uses his internet for email, so forums and gaming websites are missed too.

So in the end, he's a casual gamer buying hardcore stuff that rarely gets used

As for myself I'd consider me as a hardcore gamer but only in the RPG genre. For example, I usually clock up 100-150hours on just about every single RPG I've played and completed FFVII 3 times.

Otherwise I've been pretty casual, in fact, lately I've been really casual. Selling off my Xbox & 7 games has lightened my shoulders, GTA: San Andreas is only 30% complete since upon release (I still haven't even gotten to the other 2 islands yet!). My gaming time has been reduced from a healthy 15 hours a week to maybe just a couple of hours.

I think it's because of my life's issues, like my gf and living by myself. When I was living at home with my parents I had alot of spare time and didn't have to worry about household chores or shopping for food.

Oh, and I've been gaming since 1986

Lordage - June 7, 2005 02:52 PM (GMT)
Nice work /backslash.
Yeah I clocked up 320 hours on FFVIII, although I have every card in the game. :o

I've now got 40hours for CS this week alone... All time would be way over 500 I'd say.

I have no idea why someone would but a top range system for e-mail and casual web browsing...

I nearly had every card but missed on a couple of those "you can only get it once" opportunities

 Neither do I. Just last week we had this conversation over the phone:

friend: "when I pick up my new system, I'll have to get some games from you"
me: "what games? you've already got my copy of Rome: Total War & Need for Speed Underground 2"
friend: "don't you have anything new?"
me: "uhhh...no"
friend: "well, you know, if you wanted to, you could buy an FPS or an adventure game maybe"
me: "why don't you just buy one instead?"
friend: "why would i want to buy it? i'm not some hardcore gamer!"

Idiot.
