Title: Friggin' Blew Me Mind!!!!!
Description: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Hello - May 2, 2004 12:03 AM (GMT)
This film has already been discussed over at hyper, in 2 threads actually, but hello just saw her last night, and wanted to get his thoughts down.

My new favourite film. Period. The dude who wrote this, and the other dude who was able to put it on the silver screen, are friggin' geniuses(?).

Jim Carrey's performance is brilliant, and drew me right in. I could relate so much with his character, and he even had the same name as me! Freaky!

I can't put into words what this film meant for me. The moment I realised what was going on I felt an incredible happiness in me belly. I've never reacted this way to a film in my entire life. Towards the end, I was even holding back some tears.

Pisses all over Sleepless in Seatle - it's what all romantic comedies should be!
See her now...

It was written by Charlie Kaufman with assistance from both Michel Gondry and Pierre Bismuth. Also directed by Michel Gondry.

I have been looking forward to the film for quite some time so hopefully I'll be able to see it and post some opinions later this week.

I travelled into the city to see this beauty as soon as it opened.

Charlie Kaufman sure can write some messed up (in a good way) stuff.

I share most of your thoughts but maybe not such enthusiastically as you.

9/10

I saw it today... it took a while to get used to, but it totally kicked ass.

Cheers for the info, ~DC.
I hired their other film out today, Human Nature, and so far it's a piece of shit. Go figure... :P

Charlie Kaufman also wrote Adaptaion and Being John Malkovich. I think he's a brilliant screenplay wirter and I absolutely adored both those movies.

I quite like the way Adaptation, Being John Malkovich and Eternal Sunshine use quite well know actors, but throw them into roles they wouldn't normally play. The end up alomst unrecognisable a lot of the time (Cameron Diaz for example). The actors in all those movies seem to just give that extra something - I can't quite put my finger on it.

I'm very very keen on seeing Eternal Sunshine - it's been getting some fantastic reviews. :D

The dude wrote Adaptation, too? Cool! That film's ace. I disliked Nick Cage til I saw Adaptation but, like you say, his films seem to bring out the better in "mainstream" actors.
For those of you who like Kaufman, there's a film called American Splendour that was very similar (style, originality, blurs fiction and fact etc.) to Adaptation and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind - worth a watch if you're up for something different.

Yeah I'm hanging out to see it as well, Being John Malkovich was brilliant and original. As already mentioned, the guy puts these actors into roles that wouldn't seem suitable for them (especially Diaz! hilarious) and gets a great performance. It's like Kaufman really knows how to think outside the square when it comes to writing, I love how his movies are so wacky, yet at the same time are very moving.

I saw it today and was disappointed with the overall outcome. The transition from the original script to film was very average and I was left shaking my head at the butchered opening and end. The concept was still there but it just didn't transfer to the big screen half as well as I expected and definitely didn't have the same impact I felt from reading the script. Quite a few people ended up walking out only 1/3 through, possibly because they didn't understand the film.

The major highlight of the film was the surprise I got from seeing Carey act more than average for once. His acting ability has brought down practically every film he has acted in yet this time he didn't manage to act like an absolute over the top dickhead which was very refreshing. That is really the only positive I got from the film having sampled the joys of an obviously editted script.

The concept was amazing, original and brilliant, yet the excution just didn't work. I can only imagine how hard it would be to convey to the viewer the perspective of one person's ability to enter past memories and have them totally destroyed. However the way it was done very easily left the average viewer confused and unable to get a grip of the plot at all.

The characters performing the operation on Joel (Carey) were also conveyed as the untypical villians in the script, going as far as trashing his apartment when they found out he was hiding memories inside other memories. This aspect definitely didn't come across throughout the film at all same as with revealing that Mary (Dunst) had an abortion from her and Howard's previous relationship which she had erased. While these aspects may seem minor they make a huge difference when the whole things is put into focus.

I think the major disappointment came when the credits and ending had rolled by. The conclusion left a false sense of hope rather than finish off with Clytamenstra leaving Joel with a book of their memories before having her memory erased for the second time. I felt that the ending was changed only for the fact that the producers thought it was wise to put the film in the stereotypical comedy category in order to boost ticket sales and appeal to those who require the common "happy" ending.

Original Script: 10/10

Film: 7/10

Nice review, dude.
I found the film very confusing, but that's kinda what I liked most about it: She threw you in the deep end, and did not spoon feed the viewer.
I didn't see the ending as happy, either, because...SPOLIER...

...SPOILER...

...they lost all those memories, all the good times etc., only to end up back at square one.

I'd be interested in reading the script, now that you've raised those points...

True, but I still felt that when Joel said "Wait" it signified the fact that the may have given the relationship a second chance.

I did have the link to the script too but lost it. :( I'll try and track in down later on.

I would like to check out that script if you can dig up the link DC ;)

I really loved the movie. I thought it was great and I enjoyed it more than either Being John Malkovich and Adaptation, which were both awesome flicks. People have been quick to label it a film about love, but I would suggest that it is more about the perception of love, namely, those seemingly inconsequential moments of attraction. This movie really struck a chord with me, though I would like to see it again before I go and make some huge proclamation about it. Perhaps I'm just caught up in the memory of that initial attraction :P

Everyone is talking about the good job that Carrey did with his role, which I agree with, but I thought that Kate Winslet was absolutely amazing as Clem. I can't imagine anyone else doing such a convinving and brilliant job with the role now. Probably the best performance I've seen in a while.
