Title: Games on a rear projection T.V
Dr.Games - May 29, 2005 11:02 AM (GMT)
Hey guys, I was just wondering why can't you play games on a rear projection T.V? I know in the Xbox games manuals it says not to because it burns the picture into the screen. Why does it do this and what's the difference with a normal T.V?
It's just because we have a nice 142cm rear projection t.v in the lounge room and I'd love to get some games on that baby but I'm worried about stuffing it up!

I think that having a static image on a rear projection tv can be pretty damaging. Like, it'll leave a permanent image on the screen. But I've never had to worry about that problem myself :(
Rear projection tv's are just a projector and a screen built together while normal (CRT) televisions work by firing electrons at a screen painted with some kind of luminous paint. Well, something like that anyway.

Do it and post pictures of the results.

A lot of arcade cabinets use rear projection screens. Theres gotta be some brands you can use, some you can't.

Ive been playing games on a 61" rear projection TV for 3-4 years. Ive never had any problems. The reason they have warnings in the manuals is because of burn-in. Thats where a static image, like the score in a sports game, gets displayed on the same part of the screen for too long, and 'sticks' there even if your not playing that game.
The main risk is if you leave the game paused for long periods of time. If you need to do this, turn the screen off while your away. Otherwise you'll be fine :D

That sucks. I can't wait for LCD to become the norm and cheaper. Probably in 2 years?

Same here. We have a rear projection tv in the living room and every now and then I fire up my xbox/ps2/GCN and nothing has happened to the screen. It only "burns" static images that are left there for hours - like 10 hours or something. So don't worry, play on it and it should be fine.

Yeah, don't know why people are so freaked out by burn-in...Eyce for example isn't using his plasma for that reason!
Seriously people, as it's been said, you have to have the same image on the screen for a very long time for it to effect the screen...hell, even normal TV and PC monitors can get burn-in, and you don't see many that have been effected.(only one's I've seen have been servalence monitors)

Surveillance* :D.
I think i need a new monitor, as it is starting to discolour at the edge. It could be my imagination though.

Don't have any speakers near the monitor do you? They usually fuck up the magnets causing the monitor to change colour.

I tested it just then.
NFSU2's Gauge burned in, within several minutes while racing :P

That's because you played a game that happens to have something that sits in the one place for almost the whole duration of playing, as was said earlier. You need to play something that doesn't have anything sitting in one spot :P.

Like what smart arse?

*thinks*
You know, i can't think of a single game that doesn't have at least one thing that never moves. :ph43r:

How come Civ said his can go for like 10 hours where as yours does it in a few minutes?
quoted wrong person asking Eyce.
Eyce - June 1, 2005 08:48 AM (GMT)
His is a rear Projection. Mine is a Plasma.

Unless it's on pause, which I think is the main problem.

No no, what i said was that every game i've ever seen has at least one item on the screen that doesn't move for the entire period of playing the game.
NFSU2 has the taco, NOS gauge etc, FPS games have things like your health and ammo etc.

Oh right, I must have misread.

I've owned a rear projection television for just on a year now, video games are being played on it the majority of the time - no sign of burn in thus far. Playing games for reasonable amounts of time is definately the key, treat your television with some respect and i'm sure you'll avoid burn in. Game on! :)

I have a 121 cm LCD Rear Projection and it's fine for playing games. I play both console and PC games on it.
Most games (as well as TV station watermarks) now have any static items slightly opaque to counter burn in fears. This means that even though the item is static on the screen as long as the scene behind it moves you will not get burn in.
I can't comment on Plasma but getting burn in within 7 minutes sounds pretty damn crappy. It is the reason I went with the LCD Rear Pro over Plasma.
rampaging_geek - June 7, 2005 01:33 AM (GMT)
If image burning is such a big deal, you'd think that screensavers for TVs would be a lot more common. :\
dave_cool31 - August 4, 2005 02:30 AM (GMT)
I think they're called commercials...
_MetalliX_ - August 4, 2005 05:06 AM (GMT)
Televisions don't need a screensaver because the screen is never static for long enough. On the other hand, many DVD players will have a screensaver in case somebody leaves it on pause for too long. Screen savers originated from the old DOS days when the static text would burn into the monitor, but now they are used for more impractical purposes.
rampaging_geek - August 4, 2005 08:11 AM (GMT)
I have just realised something. I'm sure you guys have seen when a TV network has technical difficulties and leaves a static logo on the screen.
That shit is DANGEROUS.

Maybe there are no techincal difficulties, maybe its just all a conspiracy to permanently burn their logo into our televisions...?
