I'm more interested in the new Enemy Territory myself. :P
http://pc.ign.com/objects/748/748377.htmlNot quite the same as US troops vs Zombie Nazis, but it's the gameplay that's ther. :)
Sadly it's not free this time around. :(
BTW, Geoff is interested in making an ET mod(ww2 style) for Doom3 at the end of the year if you were interested in joining Mr. Hamburger. ;)

I'm definately not all that blown away by quake 4. It's using the Doom 3 engine, a game which ran comfortably on the xbox ... not exactly what I would call 'next gen' anymore.
BrotherEstapol - May 19, 2005 09:29 AM (GMT)
Yeah, but the Xbox was running it at 640x480, and the details weren't up all the way.
Simply dissmissing it cause it runs on the Xbox is just plain moronic.
Look at the PC version on a high-end PC with everything turned up and at 1600x1200, then come back to me.
EDIT: Some more info and an in-game video for Enemy Territory has come in:

Wow, this game is looking great! :woot:
Probably one of the best character models and graphics of any game I have seen to date. I especially like the Special Ops versus the supernatural theme.
HamburgerTrain - May 21, 2005 12:20 AM (GMT)
That does look good. I also heard that America's Army will be using the Unreal Engine 3 - and it will be free again, so that's another game to look out for.
On the topic of Quake, have you guys seen this? It's Quake 2 running on the Doom 3 engine, some guys are porting all of Quake 2 and updating all the models and textures.

File-shack.com has a free HD trailer you should try and download it if you can. ;)

I would be excited if my PC was still with me. :(
ElPresidente - May 25, 2005 02:46 AM (GMT)
Agreed. Go watch QIII run on a high-end PC (like mine :P) and then compare it to the Xbox version, the Xbox version looks great but pales in comparison to how it looks on a decent PC rig.
DZ is that little guy laughing at Killzone 2? :P

Elprez, actually, that was for my old sig. :P

I would have been interested in Quake 4 if it were being made by ID, not Raven. However, I would buy Quake 4 either way, as long as it's Deathmatch is similar to Quake 2's. I loved that game. :)

Go the Xbox 360 version! :P
Isn't Enemy Territory basically Battlefield 2 in the Quake world?
BrotherEstapol - August 5, 2005 02:50 PM (GMT)
No, Enemy Territory is basically Wolfenstien: Enemy Territory in the Quake world. :P
BF2 borrowed a fair amount of elements from ET, so to say that they are copying BF2 isn't really fair.
But yeah, I guess you could say that it's BF2 in the Quakle world...though I think the Strogg are slightly different to the MEC and PROC. :P

New screenies!!

The game will be powered by id Software's Doom III engine, but unlike last year's dark, horror-themed shooter, Quake Wars will take place in many varied environments, several of which will be outdoor areas. The new game will use a new "megatexture" technology developed by John Carmack, of id Software, that will let the developers create environments that render terrain all the way out to the horizon (rather than forcing the game to occlude parts of the landscape with fog or other effects to cover up a limited draw distance).
According to Wedgwood, the new technology will also let the development team assign different physical properties to different parts of the level, such as making certain surfaces made of asphalt (which will be noisier to walk upon but offer better traction for land vehicles) and others made of sand (which will be quieter to walk upon but will bog down those military jeeps). Apparently, since the game takes place on Earth just prior to the first invasion conflict that preceded the events in 1997's Quake II (in which players took on the role of a lone soldier who had to hunt down the invading Stroggs' leader), the game will take place in varied environments on the planet. In fact, it will take place not just in the desert region shown in the E3 demo movie but also possibly in temperate and jungle zones.

Agreed. Any news of an approx. release date?
BrotherEstapol - August 16, 2005 10:19 AM (GMT)
From memory, the most they've said is "2006".
I'm pretty sure that it wasn't playable at Quake-Con, so I'd then presume it isn't even in the Beta stage yet...
rampaging_geek - August 16, 2005 02:00 PM (GMT)
Here is my prediction.
Quake 4 will be crap to average.
Quake Wars will be good to great.
HamburgerTrain - August 17, 2005 01:16 AM (GMT)
It's Quake, how can it be crap? Oh wait...I said the same thing with Doom 3...:(
Oh well here's some more linkage:

Quake 4 is awesome

I consider Quake 4 to be paving the way to a next level of first-person shooting games, based both on shooting and survival-horror games. While Doom III was the mainstream starter of this new breed, I expected Quake 4 to set a solid foot in the genre, rather than take cautious steps as it did. It is also a shame as to why they haven't addressed crucial problems stemming from Doom III's design. I expect developers to learn from both Doom III and Quake 4, figure out what was good and what was bad, and finally deliver a decisive, near-flawless shooter. This should normally have only required Doom III, but it seems it wasn't enough...
locky - March 29, 2006 06:58 AM (GMT)
the thing that i enjoyed the most of Quake 4 was the way it was a no holds barred shooter. it didnt try anything fancy and it did what it had to. you were part of a war, so you fought that war. it was the perfect way to depict a setting like that. Doom 3 worked because you were alone and it conveyed that element of being helpless and enemies all around you perfectly.
it FPS stopped to do everything and concentrate on one thing then they would all be awesome (but Half Life 2 still rocks even though you did a gagillion things, but thats a whole new thread :P)
_MetalliX_ - March 29, 2006 08:47 AM (GMT)
I played it for a bit and got sick of it, it was pretty much exactly like playing Doom 3 all over again and not worth my $3 (Xbox 360 Lounge)
