Description: Official movie and tv show thread

Now this has got me really excited, the best TV show for an age gets canclled but then this http://www.apple.com/trailers/universal/serenity/ happens. Kick arse I swear this trailer gave me wood(I'm so very lonely but still it will at least give you a half wood). The series(which you should own) was awsome and unresloved this will at least solve that but apprently all so all the stars are signed on for at least two more movies if this does well YAY. I said fucking YAY. So go see it when it comes out in Semptember(or later that's the yanks date) for your old pal Quatrz_donkey even if you hated it just think about all the freaky obessed fans that your doing a favor.

I know this post is a mess but fuck it I'm excited in way a I just shouldn't be.

Yug - April 27, 2005 12:18 PM (GMT)
I dont blame you, everyone should be excited about this

Se-re-ni-ty??

Civ, it's the continuation (?) of the ill-fated TV show Firefox, by Joss Whedon of Buffy fame. Had a cult following in the US but it only lasted a season. I think it aired here as well, but it had a graveyard slot or something.

I've only seen the first two episodes a friend d/l from the web yonks ago, though I've been meaning to grab the series on DVD but I haven't got around to it so far. After seeing the trailer though, I'll be definately picking it up in the near future. :)

Firefly, ladies and gentlmen, Firefly. It was playing a couple of months ago in sevens 1 or 1:30ish timeslot so you know it must be good.

I picked it up the box set for only sixty dollars, bargin as far as I'm concerned.

I've watched the whole thing twice and all the eps with commentries again as well.

http://www.tvtome.com/Firefly/ should tell you what you need to know.
AWSOME.

ElPresidente - April 27, 2005 09:56 PM (GMT)
My box set of the series arrives today. The release of the Serenity trailer was what made me get up off my arse and finally do it since I never saw Firefly and I'm a massive Whedon fan.

Lolz, yeah thats what I meant -- Firefly! My bad.
Guess what web browser I'm using? :P

ElPresidente - April 28, 2005 05:59 AM (GMT)
An inferior one from the sounds of it. :P

Anyway I've had my box set sitting next to my monitor all day at work today... only an hour and a half til I'm able to go home and start watching.

ElPresidente - April 28, 2005 10:58 AM (GMT)
Wait wait wait...

Fox CANCELLED this?!?!?!?!?

Farking Hell. I've only just finished watching the pilot double episode and already I'm falling in love.

Grrrrrrr!!!!!!!

I know that come the end of watching the box set I'm going to find the wait for the film agonising.

Yes it will, I still think I'd rather a continuing series. The story will have to rush forward in the film other then the slow development it would of gotten otherwise, but fuck at least it's something and seems to have had a decent amount of money put into it.

I have this video from san dieago comic con it's a q & a with joss and all the actors it's good and still around I believe. Mine came in two parts about 210 megs each.

FOX are arse munchers(during defecation) sick sore fucks.

w00t it will be so god damn good. Looking forward to this more then ep 3(prob cause there hasn't been anything like ep 1 for firefly).

Silph - April 28, 2005 11:48 AM (GMT)
I watched a few episodes of Firefly when it was being played late at night, and I instantly fell in love with it. I bought the box set when I found it too.

It's incredibly annoying having to wait until sometime around September/October for this movie, especially since it was originally supposed to be released sometime around April.

ElPresidente - April 28, 2005 12:46 PM (GMT)
Just finished disc 1 which means I've just finished watching Bushwhacked... and man that was whack. :P

From that one episode I've become more terrified of the Reavers than I would think possible from a villain I've not seen. Just plain vicious.

Anyway each episode gets better and better. This series rocks.

Yug - April 28, 2005 02:21 PM (GMT)
Perhaps if there is enough public interest in the show, it will be brought back to life, kinda similar situation to what happened with the family guy?

ElPresidente - April 28, 2005 09:00 PM (GMT)
Perhaps but I'd say unlikely. However if there is enough interest in the film Joss has plans to make more Firefly movies.

Yay Tycho likes it.
And yeah thanks to the series "shiny" is now part of my vocob. It confuses people so prob isn't a good thing. umm other then that how far along are you now Elpres? Started watching again.

ElPresidente - May 4, 2005 03:46 AM (GMT)
I'm halfway through my second sit through. This series is farking amazing.

And the damn thing ends just as all the interesting story threads start to unravel.

LOVED objects in space. River is very cool. :D

quartz_donkey - May 7, 2005 08:42 AM (GMT)
http://www.fireflyfans.net/feature.asp?f=62 you can get that San Diego Comic Con Serenity Panel vid I was talking about. It's woth the wait.

Squato - September 29, 2005 10:43 AM (GMT)
*BUMP*

Well, seeing as the film is out today, I would have to say that any and all Browncoats will be happy to see the film.

~DC - September 29, 2005 12:13 PM (GMT)
Saw the movie today. Not going to spoil anything, but overall really enjoyed it. The movie certainly isn't going to win any awards but Whedon successfully managed to balance the film so that newbies and dedicated fans alike will be able to appreciate it in completely different ways.

The beginning kicked arse. The first twenty minutes flew by and couldn't have introduced the series to newcomers any better. Some of the parts in the middle dragged a tad but were put in place purposely to set up the big conclusion. The special effects for the majority were done really well, especially considering the smallish bugdet on a sci-fi film like this, but some of the effects understandably looked a tad tacky.

As quite a recent fan of the series, my viewpoint is obviously going to be a tad biased though, given fans are easily going to automatically pick up on the jokes and witty dialogue. It is certainly going to be interesting to see how casual fans, who haven't seen the series, respond to the movie too... If there was one major flaw, like Marg actually pointed out, it was lack of character development. Fillion was superb in his role, but it continously felt like he was carrying all the other actors and their characters along for the ride.

***1/2

quartz_donkey - October 1, 2005 12:47 AM (GMT)
I'd agree with the character development thing a bit, the film did seem to be about Mal and his struggles/purpose. When I saw there were old poeple like pushing 85 watching, would've liked to know what they thought. Awsome stuff though. The only flaw I've see is the it was pushed through all a bit quickly.

I wonder if he went to the same place he would've of gone with the series as he did the movies.

GO WATCH IT AGAIN SO I CAN GET MY DARN TRILOGY.

Same, but then the government could have given them their Pension.

Probably the name.
Old Person: "Serenity eh? Sounds like a nice quiet movie." :)

EDIT: I changed the title slightly. I kept seeing this thread and thinking "why are they still talking about the trailer when the movie is out".

I've seen a few episodes and it seemed pretty good. I think I'll buy the box set have a mammoth session to watch them all and then go check out the movie. Although, it's probably not as good as Voyager (my flatmate has Voyager and I've got hooked).

Voyager is good, but firefly is a very different type of show.

Trust me, your like it (any bet the main song will be stuck in your head).

I was in a computer class with TAFE a few weeks back. As nothing was happening, I figured I'll go online. When I found the theme song, I posted it on the classes message board (from the program we where using). Later on one of the other students figured that I was writing poetry, so they wanted me to write some more (true story).

Copied and pasted from Hyper because I 'm a lazy, lazy man:

Never heard of Serenity or Firefly until I saw the trailer on TV and noticed Whedon's name. I was a massive Buffy fan and have really dug Joss Whedon's style of writing for a while. Had I not been living under a rock I would have jumped on the bandwagon long ago but I'm a little slow like that. The trailer looked awesome and I was geared up to check out the movie and someone suggested I should really check out the series first and that JB had it for 40 bucks. So I thought what the hell and picked one up.

DAMN.

The only thing that awes me more than, well, pretty much everything about the show, is the fact that it was cancelled. I'm about 5 eps in now and am completely adoring it. It's the freshest most satisfying storytelling I've experienced in a long time. All the characters are perfectly crafted and exteremely likeable. The story is so intriguing and the cowboy/WWII/empire/space thing theme is most cool. Basically the only area it falls done a little is the action, which is easily forgiven. Honestly, I can't understand how something this good could be abandoned... but then I just think of Futurama... and then the urge to kill starts rising.

But yeah, having a quick look through this thread it seems everyone feels the same way. Now I just have to watch 9 more episodes before the movie disappears from the cinema. I wonder how long it will run... does anyone know if it's doing well or not? I certainly hope so.

Anyways, yeah, love Firefly, thought I'd share :D

Box office sales suggest that Serenity certainly hasn't picked up a large batch of new fans which is extremely disappointing. Currently it has only grossed just over US$10 million, although it only cost around $40 million to make. Rumours have suggested that Universal wanted at least a $50 million return before they even considering giving the greenlight to additional feature sequels.

It will be very disappointing if Whedon doesn't have the opportunity to progress the series any further, be it via television or film. The television series was generally well written and deserved at least another season before it was put under review, although Fox are notorious for pulling the plug on shows too early. The movie was fantastic, very much a culmination of everything that made the television series so great in the first place. Evidently film critics have also reflected just how well Whedon has managed to adapt it into a feature film.

Whatever the case Whedon has just recently managed to sell a sci-fi spec script to Universal for a whopping seven figure deal which means that it is certain he'll be unveiling another sci-fi feature in the near future.

The first 9 minutes of Serenity can be viewed at the following URL for free and perfectly legally.

As for profits, here is an interesting little fact I picked up whilst watching a small series on the process of film-making. The overall profit made by a film studio when its successes and failures are added up is usually around 5%. A studio could have effortlessly made that much by investing it in the bank for the same period of time and not making the movies.

Oh yeah, I heard about this. Something about a lead female character who defies stereotypes and kicks butt. Talk about a stretch for him.

There's a joke about that in the movie.

DONT READ THIS IF YOU DONT WANT MINOR JOKE SPLOIT FOR YOU(and maybe a little of the story)

Wash: What about Jane getting beat up by a 140 pound girl, I don't think that's ever getting old.
END

But still jawsy it's not just about her, hell it's more about the captian really. But I doubt thats gonna convince you.

Seen it three times now good shit.

jawbreaker982 - October 10, 2005 06:32 AM (GMT)
I'm not really sure what we are now talking about, but let me say that I consider myself a pretty big fan of both Firefly and Serenity.

Dorepoll - October 26, 2005 03:09 PM (GMT)
Still haven't seen Serenity. I just completed the whole Firefly series. Top stuff, the sharpest show I have seen in bloody ages. Dippy theme song aside, I really dug the series, and the fact they cancelled it before all of it's mysteries were revealed shits me to no end.

Hopefully Serenity will clear it up for me.

quartz_donkey - February 8, 2006 12:10 PM (GMT)
Yo biatch. It is out on DVD today yay. I got it today, and am yet to watch it hopefully tomorrow. Got it from ezydvd and it's in a tin box. Hmm more later.

~DC - February 9, 2006 03:41 AM (GMT)
I went to the EzyDVD in the city today to get the tin box edition.

They were all sold out. :(

StueyRowls - February 9, 2006 05:49 AM (GMT)
I picked up my copy yesterday from JB Hi-Fi and I got it in a slip case, which just has the serenity logo and joss' signiture embeded on it.

Damn fine movie!

Ban that man! :P

Anyways, I didn't really like the theme song at first, but it grew on me!

Also, I still haven't seen the last two episodes because, apart from having no time, I've been putting it off because I know there's none left after that >_<... I should probably get around to watching them sometime, though... Especially now that the DVD's out.

By the way, I hate Fox. Seriously, they really screwed the series over so badly. Apparently they played the episodes in the wrong order, apart from of course, not giving it a fair go. and NOW, they're acting like flipping school kids by NOT letting anyone else have the rights to the show, even though they have no plans to actually produce any more episodes. >_<! Anyone wonder why the movie wasn't called "Firefly"? That would be because Fox own the rights to that name  !!!
</rant>

Anyways, unfortunately, I have neither money nor time right now, so I'll probably pick this DVD up eventually, but I might be waiting a while. I saw it once at the movies, I was shocked by what happened at the end, though :o (no spoilers, people).

Squato - February 9, 2006 08:38 AM (GMT)
I'll try to pick it up tomorrow. But I do not thinks I'll travel an extra 10 kms just to get the box.

Yeah it's just the plastic one on the inside. I like how if you turn the slip around you don't have to look at the big ugly classifaction logo thingys. Watched the movie again today and it is as good as the first three times I've saw it. Gotta get stuck into the extras tom
