Title: I know! Lets make a flop!

Your first movie was mildly good. Critics canned it, but the public were fans, and it did reasonably well on DVD.

So you get the same lead role, change the supporting characters, mildly alter the storyline, throw a few gags in that are summarised in the trailer, and release it.

Why would you do it? You know it's going to flop. You know what it'll do to your career and reputation.

Why?

Is this question from the perspective of the actors or producers/directors?

I usually find it more curious why some actors sign up to certain movies. I'm one of those people who does judge a movie by the actors sometimes. I know the whole Hollywood economy banks on this, but my reasoning has always been "such and such is a good actor, they have lots of cash, they wouldn't sign up to a crap movie after reviewing the script", yet I've given up on this after seeing it repeatedly fail recently.

Maybe their currency is limelight rather than dollars...

Halle Berry's acceptance speech, for Catwoman, at the 2005 Razzies summed up the "cash cow" perfectly = ""I want to thank Warner Brothers for casting me in this piece of shit...I'd like to thank the rest of the cast - to give a really bad performance like mine you need to have really bad actors." She continued to say that she only did it for the money, but I couldn't find the quote. HA!

Well, the two movies mentioned did very nicely at the box office, so in a studios mind, that means the sequel will do well to.

I love Miss Congeniality a lot. When I saw it, I was expecting crap, but I ended up laughing through most of it. While I never thought much could come out of a sequel, that's how the system works.

Besides, it's not like Sandra's getting any other good work...

And not to mention Deuce Bigalo: European Gigilo
Or even xXx 2

I suppose it's because for the studios, it's a relatively safe bet to go for a sequel than to take a risk on a new movie that may or may not bring in the money.

I love Miss Congeniality a lot.

I hope this is the inscription on his tombstone when he dies. Everyone needs laughter.

Oh geez, can't you suspend the cynic in you for a while and just enjoy a fun little flick that requires no brains? It had charming characters and a witty script. Hardly academy material, but I hardly think it's worth being burned over liking a film that doesn't have a shred of originality. :P

You're talking to a man who considers his favourite genre of film to be the 'brainless-zombie-gorefest' genre. Miss Congeniality, however, was wretched and beyond brainless.

Stick a fork in me, I'm done.

Yes, even the best part of MC's gag-writing was derivative. The gag-writing. From yet other derivative films. Low. No, lower, looooooweeeeeeer...
