Title: The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay
CLL - April 30, 2004 09:02 AM (GMT)
I first heard about this game a couple of months back, but didn't think too much of it at the time. But after reading a a few snippets here and there, and finally this preview (link below), it sounds like a game that might be worth looking at. For those who don't know, Riddick is the character played by Vin Diesel in the sub-par movie Pitch Black.
It's an action game, with main elements of FPS/hand-to-hand fighting, and a little touch of stealth, with (according to the preview) some RPG as well. You'll have to read the preview to get a better picture of the game, but it does look promising and the screens look nice as well.
IGN's previewAny thoughts?

Well from the first screen shot, this game doesn't look all that great, the pipes on the wall aren't bump-mapped and the level looks quite stale. But I actually really liked the movie Pitch Black, I thought it was pretty good.
Ghost Boy - May 31, 2004 05:22 AM (GMT)
I really liked the movie Pitch Black too and have been licking my lips over the sequel ever since it was announced (due for release June 11th -
here's the site).
I do, however, tread very lightly when it comes to movie/game tie-ins. History has shown that they usually suck and get completely pulled apart by anything they're up against. The only reason they do well is due to popularity of the film (certainly in the case of ETM). Here's a thread for movie/game discussion:

I really hope this is a decent game, but I won't be holding my breath over it. Of course I'll wait until we get some reviews before my final judgement, but I smell a cash in already. :(

Well, some early reviews have been pretty good for it. Might be best to wait a while and determine whether it's worth buying or renting.
quartz_donkey - June 1, 2004 01:27 AM (GMT)
Yeah didn't Vin Diesal get pissed that the xXx games sucked and did something about it? I think he started a development company. Well like the first movie and looking forward to the next one so wait and see how this turns out.

Yeah, Tigron studios or something.
After the atrocity that was XXX, I have no respect for Vin, or anything he does. So this'll be a miss for me.

xXx was nothing but James Bond meets the X Games. Unfortunately I think it was pushed too much as the Bond replacement so most people went in expecting something different. The more you see it, the more you can appreciate that they were simply trying to put catch phrases to Tony Hawk's world and not create a new serious breed of secret agent.

| xXx with Vin Diesel is gonna be a b*tch to download off the net! |
I love that quote...
Hyper previewed this game in their latest issue and seem to have high hopes about it, bragging about things about normal mapping which apparently will greatly improve the game visually, get as much power from the box as possible all the while not chewing up the frame rate.
And apparently most of the original cast from the movie (Pitch Black) are lending their voice talents to the game, including Vin Diesel.

When I first heard the name of this game, I automatically thought:
"Fred Guppie and the Time Machine"

Bah!
XxX was nothing but a sorry excuse for "badass" explosions and jumping over helicopters on motorbikes.
I hated it from start to finish.
CLL - June 2, 2004 12:41 AM (GMT)
Both IGN and Gamespot have given Riddick good reviews. Will be interesting to see what Hyper has to say.

I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw that score. Too bad the value score is a bit too low; seems like a bad habit when it comes to action games on consoles. Correct me if i'm wrong, but isn't this is the first movie related game to score over 8.5! Nice.
Manny M - June 2, 2004 02:45 AM (GMT)
You forget Goldeneye on the N64 Mach?
_MetalliX_ - June 3, 2004 07:45 AM (GMT)
I had no idea, turns out The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay is not a prequel to the movie Pitch Black, but a game based on the movie by the same title. You heard right, Vin is currently shooting the movie, release date unknown...
quartz_donkey - June 3, 2004 10:39 AM (GMT)
I think everyone knew that. But hey good for you.
quartz_donkey - June 3, 2004 10:40 AM (GMT)
My bad again quick reply stuffing up on me or I just suck.

You smelt wrong. Gamespot gave it a 9.3 and said it was easily one of the best Xbox games yet. ;)

Aside from Goldeneye, which got 9.9 I believe, Die Hard Trilogy on PSX got 9.5.

I'm very sure the game is extremely close to release here, anyone picking this up? I would if I had the money. I'm definitely going to give it a rental though.
~DC - July 29, 2004 08:54 AM (GMT)
I was originally thinking purchase but with Doom 3 also just around the corner I'm afraid it will only be a rental at this stage.
_MetalliX_ - July 29, 2004 09:19 AM (GMT)
I think I'll just watch the movie (OMG yes it was based on a movie! shock! :P) and then go from there...

I think it's already out, although that could've been just a display box at EB.
*just checked, the release date was 22nd of July*
Well, I was going to pick it up, but still don't know if it's a good game or not, despite the reviews.
What to do, what to do.

I'm pretty sure the game is set before the new Movie, and after Pitch Black, so if I'd be playing the game 1st.
Comrade Natrak - August 14, 2004 05:32 AM (GMT)
The game's actually set before Pitch Black and the new Chronicles of Riddick movie.
I just rented the game and after about an hour and half's worth of play I love it. The stealth elements work beautifully, as does the hand to hand combat and everything else in the game (that I've had a taste of so far at least :P ).
The Prison is very harsh and gritty and you really get the feeling that you are in the universe's toughest prison.
After playing this game I've decided I'm going to purchase it as soon as I can, the gameplay is great, the visuals are fantastic (Aside from the occasional holes in the character models - a problem most evident on Riddick himself.) and the voice acting's great. The game is great judging from my early impressions and although it might be a good idea to take advice from someone who's played the game a little more than I, I'd recommend it to anyone.
ElPresidente - August 14, 2004 10:33 PM (GMT)
Since only Natrak seems to be the only one to have played the game and posted about it here (which depresses me no end for reasons that will rapidly become apparent) I thought I should throw in the opinion of a person who has also had the pleasure, nay, the honour of engaging in Escape from Butcher Bay.
Put simply it is astounding.
Words just can't describe how increadibly immersive this game is. All elements from bare knuckled fighting, to the seamless stealth interaction to the more adventure/RPG style questing blend together perfectly.
In fact the closest game I've played to this in design would be Deus Ex. That is quite a strong title to draw comparisons too, but its true.
Believe the hype.
Comrade Natrak - August 15, 2004 05:56 AM (GMT)
Nice to see you around these parts Prez. :)
I've gotten some more time with the game and I can safely say the only part I haven't enjoyed was the somewhat mindless pit section. As satisfying as it was blasting away dwellers with the shotgun I couldn't help but feel lost. Luckily the section was over very quickly.
I really believe that this game should be a compulsary purchase for the Xbox, up there with games like Halo and KOTOR.
Pauly - August 15, 2004 06:53 AM (GMT)
Woo I can't believe the amount of hype I'm hearing about this game. Might have to pick myself up a copy (so many games I still have to buy).
Great to see you Prez.
_MetalliX_ - August 15, 2004 09:05 AM (GMT)
I think I wont be buying this game for my own good, too much study on my plate :(
Also, is it scary?
Manny M - August 15, 2004 09:33 AM (GMT)
Don't think it has a "DOOM III" level of scariness, but it's pretty dark.
Gah! And you were trying to talk me out of trading in Sudeki for this, eh Prez.
Comrade Natrak - August 16, 2004 08:30 AM (GMT)
I'm yet to be scared by the game, it's dark, but not scary.
