Title: Donkey Kong Jungle Beat
Description: Action Platformer Bongo Madness! OUT NOW
borgster101 - March 13, 2005 12:27 AM (GMT)
Couldn't find a thread for this game, which was surprising, but seeing that the game is being released this Thursday and I've decided that I'm going to purchase it, I thought I'd make a thread.
So, who else is going to purchase this game? There has been some promising reviews across the board, with the game averaging
82%, it seems that the main concern of the game is length as it seems that it can be completed in 3 to 4 hours, very short I know, but the true game doesn’t in fact end there. You will see the credits roll, but if you want to unlock all the levels, and therefore truly finish the game you'll need to uncover the games deep combo system to obtain the gold and platinum medals, which are not possible to obtain by merely jumping into the bananas.
I think it's great that this game would be so accessible for beginners, since people that aren’t comfortable with controllers should be able to learn the basics very quickly, tap left and right to move, both to jump and clap to attack/grab, non-gamers could easily play this game. At the same time, the combo system provides the deeper gameplay for hardcore gamers, that are willing to master every
Here's a few screens:

If a major complaint about a game, is it's length, then it's a definate must have for me. Not sure if i'll get it this week though. I'll see.
Stevorooni - March 13, 2005 08:09 AM (GMT)
The graphics certainly look awesome.
~DC - March 13, 2005 10:14 AM (GMT)
I'll probably wait a bit before I get it. The length is certainly not a problem for me however they are just too many games out at the moment on my 'to buy' list.

im verry muhc looking forward to this. ive been hanging out for it ever since last E3.
plus i have hardly anytime to play games at the moment so im looking for quick fix short games, this seems to be exactly what i need.
i preoredered it a while back, im still deciding if i should get the bongo version as its only $30 more for a second pair of bongos hmmmm.
anyway i cant wait
SplatCatSplat - March 14, 2005 02:09 PM (GMT)
I've pre-ordered it from dvdcrave with another set of bongos so I can play 2 player! Should be a blast!
~DC - March 15, 2005 12:00 AM (GMT)
I don't think there is a multiplayer mode in Jungle Beat...
borgster101 - March 15, 2005 12:23 AM (GMT)
Nope there isnt a multiplayer mode in Jungle Beat, perhaps he was refering to multiplayer Donkey Konga?
cd2 - March 15, 2005 12:28 AM (GMT)
Nintendo should bring out a bundle Donkey Konga and Jungle beat with a set of drums. that would be sweet.
SplatCatSplat - March 16, 2005 03:00 PM (GMT)
Yer it was for Konga (the 2 drums)
I got it today (Jungle Beat) but you guys said its not out to tomorrow so I havn't played it yet. Hopefully i'll give it a go thursday.
StompBrother - March 16, 2005 03:09 PM (GMT)
Got this today. Was gonna get the game by itself but an extra $20 garners me an extra bongo plus nifty box. So bundle it was.
After a nifty introduction tat introduces you to the control system you are set. First thing that struck me was the stylized and very impressive visuals and the fantastic percussion heavy music!
Gameplay wise, it's very fast and takes a littel to get used to. I keep getting jump and clap mixed up. But there are visual cues everywhere for you to do whatever but there is a lot going on and the fun of it comes from the actual bongo controls. It somewhat feels like a novelty but it soons becomes highly entertaining and makes a lot of sense. The boss battles are fun. Think of a bongo style arcade boxing game.
It "appears" to be a short game though, but it looks to be a high score type of game.
Still mighty impressive. I give it a huge thumbs up and 3 chimpanzees.

I managed to pick myself up a bundle today :D game + bongos!
EB actually didnt have it in yet :( , they said they should receive it later today, but thankfully I found that was availble from GameRush, so I grabbed it. I guess that's how it will sometimes work when you attempt to purchase the game on the morning of the release date, if the store didnt get it in the day before, it wont be in during opening hours.
I havent had a chance to actually play it yet, but it looks like a lot of fun, I'll post impressions later on.
Manny M - March 17, 2005 03:28 AM (GMT)
I bought it today as well, but for a mate who's birthday is on tomorrow.
I'll play it then.
borgster101 - March 17, 2005 11:32 PM (GMT)
Alright, I've now had a good couple of hours with the game, and I've finished it, medals and all! Talk about short :P
Nah, just kiding, I havent even seen the credits yet, nor have I unlocked all the levels. From what I have played so far, it is a lot of fun :D , very fast and lots of room for improvement in each level as I've gone back to a few levels already and improved my beats, and I know I could do better again, there is an addictive nature to this game, but the game forces you to take a break, since you will tire out your arms playing this game  .
At the start of the game, it is quite easy to unlock the next kingdom as all you need to do is essnetially beat the previous kingdom, but now I'm at a stage where I need more medals to open up more kingdoms, which is forcing me to go back to older levels and improve my score :) . The game actually has more kingdoms that I thought, which is nice :).
The bosses in the game are awesome, and make great use of the bongos, the only shame is that the same 4 bosses repeat, but they do have differences, they become obviously harder forcing you to be even more quick with your timing.
All in all, I'm enjoying this game, it should keep me going until Resident Evil 4 next week, and even then I think I'll probably be coming back to this.
Stevorooni - March 18, 2005 10:08 AM (GMT)
I picked up my copy on Thursday night. This EB idiot almost gave me Donkey Konga because he didn't realise they were two different games.
I can only play it for about an hour at a time, then my hands hurt too much. I guess I'm just whacking it too hard :P
Naclj - March 18, 2005 04:45 PM (GMT)
yeah i got it on thursday as well.
im quite a way through it, ive actualy been playing it with my girlfriend so we each take turns as the levels arent very long at all.
im quite anoyed not at the lenght of the game cos hey my most played game of this generation "ikaruga" thakes 30mins to finish but im anoyed at how ive never gotten anything less than a silver medal on my first run through, ive actualy got gold on my first shot on a couple of levels. the game is not too short, its too damn easy, im still bumbling around not controling DK very well most of the time and yet im never having any troubles getting silver or gold.
i was hoping for some hard as nails sections that are killer to combo and get high scores but it just isnt happening.
as for the graphics, DAMN this is one damn gorgeous looking game, i absolutely love the art style and the level of detail. damn nice looking game.
the sound is a bit odd as im having lots of audio issues, im not sure if its the game or my set up we've had thuder storms so ive had to unplug my stuff a few times so im not sure if ive pulled something lose or if it is the game. its all ive been playing or listening to so im not sure.
so basicaly it is a great little fun game that i can see myself wanting to play after ive finished it just cos its so fun but damn i wish they had different bosses.
borgster101 - March 18, 2005 11:48 PM (GMT)
I actually finished the game today (well not really, but I saw the credits) :) .
It's not really over though, since I've now unlocked new kingdoms :) these require more crests so I've had to go back and get some gold. The unlocked levels after the credits are more difficult at least for me.
For me, in the later levels I only managed a bronze medal, mainly since the boss kicked my arse a bit the first time through, hence I lost a lot of beats. So there is some replay to improve my score :) .
According to the reviews there are also platnium crests, which require 1200 beats :nooo: , the best I have got so far is about 1000. So even if you have a few golds first try and think that there's no reason to come back, there is if you want those platniums. I'm not sure if you need the platnium crests to unlock more bonus levels though.
As I play, the game seems to continue unlocking more stuff, which is nice :) .
borgster101 - March 20, 2005 03:34 AM (GMT)
Got my first Platnium crest today :woot: . I scored 1205 beats in the first kingdom, you need 1200 to score a platnium, can it get any closer  .
After stringing together some nice combos and finding a secret stash of banana's I had about 1150 beats, and then I scored another 50 in the last falling banana's section, ended up facing the boss with 1215 beats, got hurt once, but lucky I was able to hang on for that platnium :D .
cd2 - March 20, 2005 09:12 PM (GMT)
Sounds like your having some great fun with this game. Makes me wish I was working and making money to buy it... I guess Ill pick it up later down the track when I'm workin again.
borgster101 - March 21, 2005 02:18 AM (GMT)
Yeah it's lots of fun, and since the levels are so quick there is a incentive to retry them to improve your score, it doesnt feel like a chore. Trying to top your score makes the boss fights intense, not so much because of a threat of dying (since you'll rarely die aganist a boss, except maybe on your first go if you havent figured out his patterns) but rather it's intense because you want to hold on to those beats, getting hit too much could mean the difference between a gold and a silver.
StompBrother - March 21, 2005 10:27 AM (GMT)
Yeppers, this game is fun. I haven't finished it yet. Taking my time and also "life" and other priorities eating up my gaming diet.
Many will scoff at it's "easy difficulty" and length, but truth be told, Jungle Beat is a score attack game and trying to get a high Beat count is a difficult task. Very similar to Yoshi's Story on the 64. It was piss easy but acquiring 30 melons was a herculean task requiring very little error and level knowledge. As for thelength I think there is ample enough levels to try out. I certainly ain't complaining with what seems to be about 16 kingdoms with 2 levels and a boss each. Lots of variables for high scoring too.

After having a heck of a time trying to find the Game + Bongos package yesterday I went to a more local Harvey Norman and had no trouble at all getting the game.
I got home and set it up right away. I played through only the first 3 levels but I must say, this game is an absolute blast. If there's one word to describe Jungle Beat with it's 'fresh'. Forget touch screens, forget voice recognition...bongos are the best new way to play games. :P
And boy, is this game a Visual powerhouse or what? It looks fantastic. I have fallen in love with this game. Every now and then I get kind of tired of Nintendo, but then they release a Gem like Paper Mario 2 or this game, Jungle Beat, and I'm ready to sing their praises once again. Kudos, Nintendo, for providing something fresh, fun and addictive.
Gio - March 30, 2005 10:30 AM (GMT)
*$90 to go..* <_<
:P
Can't wait to play this.
borgster101 - March 31, 2005 12:33 AM (GMT)
Have kind of stopped playing this since Resident Evil 4, but I'll probably get back into it soon to try and unlock the last remaining level.
Manny M - September 25, 2005 01:51 PM (GMT)
Ok, so I finally got to play this since buying it last Monday, and i've just gotta say, this is FANTASTIC!
Geez, here's a game where the main aim is just fun. Levels aren't too complex, gameplay itself isn't too complex, and it's not easy in the sense that you're done in minutes and never want to return.
The graphics looks fantastic, and the gameplay with the bongo drums just becomes second nature, and works very well.
I didn't know what to expect, but thank you Nintendo for once again bringing back some old fashioned fun into gaming. This is something that my non-gaming friends will love.
BrotherEstapol - September 25, 2005 02:17 PM (GMT)
I reckon this'll be the sort of game that Nintendo will be bring out for the Revolution; Simple, easy, appealing to the non-gamers, and above all: Fun! :D
borgster101 - September 25, 2005 11:05 PM (GMT)
I actually had another go at this game recently and I finally unlocked the last level :D , indeed it's a game that is great for non gamers but there is enough depth for the hardcore to keep coming back :D
