Ok, so my friend wants to take a screenie of some movie file he has, problem is i cant figure out how it works. tried print screen, but playing the file in win dvd, win amp or win media player and copying it into paint or photoshop 8 it wont work. as soon as you close the film clip the screenie disapears, it seems that it does nothing more than make a link to the file cos if you unpause it the clip starts to play in paint.
is there a program like fraps that will work for film clips?

Try Winamp again, it works for me.(I've got version 5.08b)
If not, then try fiddling around with the Video settings in prefrences.

Try print screening from Quicktime. ie, play the file in Quicktime. That works for me.

Yes, if the file is played in quicktime do that. Because for me, quicktime dosn't react kindly to fraps.

Open it in Windows Media Player and press Ctrl+i. So much easier than needing a program to take a screenshot.
Don't know if this works before version 9, but before then the print screen probably still worked...
(If Ctrl+i doesn't work, try a few other letters, it's Ctrl+something)
