Title: OST - Soundtracks
Description: A topic about Soundtracks...
Loach - February 18, 2005 03:02 PM (GMT)
I feel like getting some soundtracks and the members of this board seem to have film fetishes so perhaps you could recommend some. Scores are what I'm mainly looking at getting (Already got the Matrix ones of course), but anything really would be grand. Consider this a thread in which you can talk about how great the soundtrack for X film was.
Kill Bill, now that was a soundtrack I wanted to get now that I think about it. Anyone got any suggestions for epic sort of music?

So you've got the complete Matrix Scores, or just the soundtracks? The 2CD Score sets, I mean. Bloody good, check em out if you haven't (they're kinda hard to find, so if you're having trouble, pm me).
I'm not a proffessional muso and I don't analyse music or anything like h&r, but I would definetly recommend you Gladiator (or in that mind, anything Hans Zimmer), anything John Williams (Harry Potter, Star Wars, any Spielberg film), Lord of the Rings most definetly, I quite liked The Man in the Iron Mask myself, Kill Bill ones are definetly worth picking up, though they're compilations... those are a few on my belt!

Yes, Zimmer's good with a hook. Go for The Last Samurai (better on album than in-film), Beyond Rangoon and the Prince of Egypt and Gladiator promos. Spanglish and Matchstick Men are genuinely strange fluff listens, if you'd prefer something in that vein.
Mind, there are three Zimmers: Eighties, Testosterone and Romantic. Don't write them all off on account of disliking one.
Anyway, I'd say his standing career highlight'd be The Thin Red Line; incidentally, I'm looking forward to his next Malick commission: The New World.
If you're checking out Potter, seriously, just opt for Azkaban. Stone and Chamber recycle everything from Minority Report to Hook, and not only is Azkaban the most fun, Williams also spends time variegating his thematic material.
Other ideal JW primers are Jurassic Park, Angela's Ashes, any Indy instalment (Indy > Star Wars any day of the week) and if you can track these bastards down, The Towering Inferno and Stanley & Iris.
Cliff Martinez writes wonders of atmosphere and electronic ambience. Composed a lot of Soderbergh stuff like Traffic and Solaris to name two of my favourites. John Powell's on the opposite end of the genre spectrum: things like his Bourne scores, Paycheck, Face/Off are fucking headbangers. Very cool, very industrial.

Last Samurai was Zimmer eh? Might check it out. Are the promo versions full scores?... I have the commercial OST for Gladiator.
Hmm, what's a good example of the Romantic Zimmer?
Kind of agree with you there about Azkaban; I did get a feeling of "Been there, done that" alot while listening to Philosipher's. Secrets was even more so for obvious reasons, but Azkaban was alot different. Is there a complete score available for that?
Solaris... that was an odd yet strangely good movie, I'll check that out maybe. Thanks! (Even though it was directed to loach :P)

Thanks for your replies guys, I'll definitely check those out.

Check out the soundtrack to Grace of my Heart, featuring music collaborated on by Elvis Costello and Burt Bacharach.
Don't pass up Blade Runner either, Vangelis' defining film score moment.

Sweet, I finally found a location for a decent quality version of the Matrix Reloaded Score... the one I had before wasn't perfect in that department.

I can endorse that. The remix of The Outsider is unbelievable in my mind

Fish: Romantic Z is...The Power of One, Beyond Rangoon, Gladiator; that sort of vein. They're arbitrary groupings but not inappropriate.
fishonthecarpet - February 24, 2005 12:18 PM (GMT)
Cheers h&r, might check out some.

I HIGHLY recommend the House Of Flying Daggers OST. It's stunningly beautiful just like the film. The simpler tracks on the album are the most magnificent imo... they deliver such a captivating atmosphere.
I find it difficult to describe the OST in words... experience it for yourself.

Great CD. I whole heartedly endorse everyone to own that CD. Legitimate or otherwise. It's probbaly the album that got me into Slipknot and some of the harder bands I wouldn't listen to before.

I'm looking forward to seeing the movie... and given the Crouching Tiger Soundtrack, I'm looking forward to hearing the music too!

Hey guys I thought I'd post in here that I just purchased the Oc Mix 1.
It's pretty good, I got all the tunes I like from series 1.
I also just purchased (around a week ago) the entire first series box set.
I'm loving it!

Pulp Fiction and Resevoir Dogs both have excellent sound tracks too.
And Fear and Loathing in Las Vagas is gold! I also like Remember the Titans, there's oldschool goodness on that.
