Title: Xbox Power Cord Safety Recall- Must Read
Description: You don't want your xbox to catch fire

StueyRowls - February 18, 2005 06:31 AM (GMT)
This was on the radio today and low and behold microsoft have put out a safety recall on power cords for some models. It's a free replacement if your xbox qualifies, which can be ordered through there website HERE

Here's a general overview of the problem:

QUOTE

Why are Xbox replacement power cords needed?
The replacement power cords are designed to protect consumers and their Xbox consoles from rare electrical component failures that can pose a fire hazard.

How great is the risk?
Fewer than one in 10,000 consoles have experienced these component failures. In almost all instances, any damage caused by these failures was contained within the console itself or limited to the tip of the power cord at the back of the console.

Does my console require a replacement cord?
If it was manufactured before October 23, 2003, your console requires a replacement cord (except for consoles purchased in Continental Europe, where consoles manufactured prior to January 13, 2004 require a replacement cord). Consoles manufactured after October 23, 2003 (after January 13, 2004 for consoles purchased in Continental Europe) do not require replacement cords because design improvements to the cord and console already protect against the problems that are addressed by the replacement cords.

Hope no one's Xbox catches fire in the meantime :argh:

DJ-Civic - February 18, 2005 07:19 AM (GMT)
Yikes. I leave mine plugged in all the time.
I've got a crystal xbox so I don't know when they were manufactured, but I'll check the site anyway.

EDIT: Looks like my model isn't affected.

borgster101 - February 18, 2005 09:13 AM (GMT)
Crap I got the Massive Entertainment Pack, which was before October 2003 :argh: . Thanks for the info.

EDIT; looks like I need a new cord, thanks again Stuey :) .

_MetalliX_ - February 18, 2005 10:06 AM (GMT)
Pfft, mine hasn't stuffed up yet, when it does set on fire... you know who to call. Isn't it a bit late to be doing a recall now anyways, I mean common... 2 years?

My thoughts exactly. It's pretty late for microsoft to be sending out a recall now.
Fortunately for me my Halo green xbox was made in 2004 so i'm not affected.

Hope everything goes well for you borgster, just play with a fire hose next to your xbox and everything will be alright ;)

denno - February 18, 2005 12:06 PM (GMT)
there has only been one case of minor singeing of carpet in australia since release. dunno if its worth the effort. mine is always unplugged anyway

DJ-Civic - February 18, 2005 02:59 PM (GMT)
On a related note - this guy was playing Halo 2 on Live last night and we were on same team, and he's trying to tell us something about "going to xbox.com and order a new..." when everyone goes "Shut the f**k up". I wanted to know what he was on about, so now I know. I hope the guys who told him to shut up get their 'boxes burnt. :P

borgster101 - February 18, 2005 11:45 PM (GMT)
Yeah well, it's pretty unlikely that I'll be affected since I've had the Xbox since December 31st 2002 and it's affected apparantly 1 in 10,000 people, but I thought since my console 'qualifies' and Microsoft are sending it for free, why not place an order :) .

Should be ok :)

markymark - February 19, 2005 03:23 AM (GMT)
how shonky is microsoft? unbelievable! it's seems they just get the public to product test their stuff. i know i won't be buying a xenon on release.

kami - February 19, 2005 03:39 AM (GMT)
Just like the PSP. Looks like we can only trust Nintendo :P

markymark - February 19, 2005 03:53 AM (GMT)
i was going to point that out too, but i didn't want to come across as a nintendo fanboy :D

BrotherEstapol - February 19, 2005 05:12 AM (GMT)
Yeah I got an email on this yesterday.

I was kinda hoping that I could get a free cord, that way I can leave one cord with my new Component cables at the TV, and the normal A/V plugs and the other power cord at my PC, which would mean I'd only have to move the box and controllers. :D

But alas, my box was only made in September 04. :(

borgster101 - February 19, 2005 05:49 AM (GMT)
It's strange that the recall is happening now? Why did it take so long for something to be done about it? Does the problem only happen after years of use?

BrotherEstapol - February 19, 2005 08:04 AM (GMT)
Ok, sorry, but I have to post this. :P

Hehe. Trust Penny Arcade to give MS/IGN some shit.

Cracks? From what I remember they're hairline scratches which don't burn you or make the console not work. ;)

Comrade Natrak - February 19, 2005 03:13 PM (GMT)
They're hairline cracks. Dangerous or not, it's a manufacturer's fault and a clear indicator that Nintendo aren't perfect. -_-

Microsoft are doing the right thing by recalling parts that they know have a potential problem. They're doing the right thing yet we still manage to put a negative spin on it.

You must be a fan of the term "better late than never". :P

Comrade Natrak - February 19, 2005 03:36 PM (GMT)
It is rather applicable in this case isn't it?

Indeed, it's strange that the recall is only happening now one can only guess the circumstances behind the decision.

ElPresidente - February 19, 2005 09:38 PM (GMT)
Actually when you are talking about a situation that effects only .01% of the xbox owning population and it is something that occurs to long term use then chances are that it is only now that MS has realised it is a systemic defect in cords manufactured at that time and not just one or two anomalies in the manufacture process.

There is nothing strange about the recall happening now.

I love how the desire of people to MS bash can cause them to lose their ability for cogent thought. Please folks, step back and think, use your brains. God gives them to you for a reason.

In their news item though they were actually quite sympathetic to the problem but said the image of MS selling stuff that could harm you was too hard to resist. :P

[DZ] - February 19, 2005 09:44 PM (GMT)
Lets hope they test the Xenon's power cable then, eh? ;)

kami - February 20, 2005 03:36 AM (GMT)
I got an email the other day. I can't really be bothered checking to see if my XBox is eligible for a replacement power cord, though maybe I might do it some time if I happen to get bored enough.

ultracrazy1 - February 20, 2005 07:45 AM (GMT)
A problem affects such a miniscule amount of xbox owners, they do a wide recall and some of you manage to think, "what bastards." Dear god.

Mind boggling aint it?

You're a knob, and I'm amazed someone could decide whether or not to buy a console based on a piddly matter such as this one.

Dickhead.

Anyway, I can't be arsed to check for the problem, and even if it did happen to me, I'd probably welcome it, because it'd be a great ice-breaker the next time I'm involved in awkward conversation.

"So... um, guess what? My Xbox tried to kill me, but I swear, I only played Grabbed By The Ghoulies by accident."

Hmm, so you can't be bothered checking a simple e-mail, but you can be bothered posting here, the fact that you can't be bothered checking the e-mail..... rrrrrright.

Also Moggo, I wouldn't be so quick to start cursing at other members. You're treading a very fine line. Watch yourself.

[DZ] - February 20, 2005 10:16 PM (GMT)
Don't mind him, he's just seeking attention. Attention whore! Still fun to read his insults though. :P

borgster101 - February 20, 2005 11:13 PM (GMT)
I only found it strange that it was happening now, because you'd think such a defect would be discovered in the testing process.

In anycase, I'm happy that MS are sending off the cords free of charge to all owners that are eligible for the new cord since it effects such a small amount of customers.

That reminds me, elprez you got your Xbox at launch didnt you? Did you order a new cord as well? Actually who else has ordered a new cord, I'm the only one at the moment.

ElPresidente - February 21, 2005 01:53 AM (GMT)
Yep. I had to order one. Better safe than sorry.

Comrade Natrak - February 21, 2005 04:45 AM (GMT)
Yeah, I ordered a new cord. As Prez put it, it's better to be safe than sorry. Plus, I can't pass up free stuff. :P

I read it, and decided that a new power cord isn't enough of an incentive to do anything more than read it. In any case:

Checking to see when I bought my XBox requires me going to the pile of boxes in my room, opening the XBox Box and looking around for the receipt.

Posting on the forums requires me to be on the forums (which I probably already am) and typing a few words & clicking on 'add reply'.

ElPresidente - February 21, 2005 05:47 AM (GMT)
Actually just look underneath the Xbox. You just need the manufacture date and the serial no. you big silly. :P

kami - February 21, 2005 06:47 AM (GMT)
Fine. Though if I get a hernia from lifting up my XBox you're paying for my hospital fees :P

~DC - February 21, 2005 06:58 AM (GMT)
After almost dropping the console attempting to check the date it seems I'll also need to get one just in case.

Do you have to email Microsoft if you want a replacement or what?

ElPresidente - February 21, 2005 08:06 AM (GMT)
Check page one for the link. :P

~DC - February 21, 2005 08:29 AM (GMT)
Hehe, completely missed that. :P

Just placed the order then, no hassle at all.

Damn it, because I'd really like to insult you at this very moment for being such a pedantic... oh, right. Whatever. You guys are seriously in need of a reality check.

Anyway, I still can't be bothered getting one.

Manny M - February 21, 2005 08:24 PM (GMT)
Us being pedantic, because you called another member a dickhead? We've let alot slide when it comes to you, so maybe it's time for your sorry little ass to get a reality check, in the form of a temp ban.

Surashu - February 21, 2005 08:35 PM (GMT)
I bought mine about a month ago, so I think its ok. :dance3: :xbox:

borgster101 - February 21, 2005 11:47 PM (GMT)
Was a bit hesitant when playing KOTR II on the Xbox yesterday, in some ways I'd rather not know of the problem because now it's in the back of my head whilst playing the console :( .
