Title: PSX mem cards in PStwo's
Description: Help needed!

TrinityJayOne - February 14, 2005 02:50 AM (GMT)
So yesterday I went to play GT2 on my slimline PStwo and the cursed thing wouldn't detect my PSX memory cards. :o The game told me that both slots were empty, and the PStwo's system browser wouldn't detect them either. I fired up the old grey brick and they worked fine... So I put them back in the PStwo and nothing again! :argh:

Now the old jumbo PS2 would read them fine (why wouldn't it), and the PStwo manual does indeed say that it can read the old PSX cards.

I ended up ringing Sony's tech support line and the guy there said it was weird. "Your console might be faulty, get in touch with the distributor". Rang EB and the guy said that he has a slimline PStwo himself and PSX memory cards work with it just fine! :nooo:

So I need you chaps to help your fave Sony Adminerator out. :cheese: To anyone who has a slimline PStwo and a PSX memory card/s, please try the cards with the console and see if it detects them. Let me know if they're 3rd party ones too because mine are and I think that might have something to do with it. *stabs Sony* <_<

Yeah, I have the exact same problem.

The memory card will work on the ps1 just fine, but when I put it into my streamline psTwo, it doesn't detect it. My memory card is an official sony one, but it's a Japanese one, or atleast that's what I assume it is since it has Japanese text on it. I have a similar problem with dual shock 1 controllers with the console.

I too phoned up Sony tech support, which eventually led to me going back to EB and exchanging it for a new psTwo... but I still have the same problems with the new one =/.

I decided a while ago that it's not a big problem, so I just let it rest... I got a 1 year warranty so why not put it off? But now you've sparked my interest in the matter again. I'm thinking it's either our memory cards, or a bad batch of psTwos.

Say, where did you purchase your psTwo? I got mine from EB in Melbourne Central Station.

Welcome to Evo. :)

Sony memory cards aren't region specific, so technically that shouldn't cause a problem.

Your PSX Dual Shock, is it an official Sony one or is it third party? I only have two controllers for my PSX and they're both original (non-analogue) ones so I can't test it for ya. :(

I thought maybe it was Sony secretly making the console so that third party memory cards wouldn't be detected (how I don't know ), but if yours is official and still doesn't work...well it's very odd indeed.

Yes, the propblem is there, not all 3rd party cards work, esp the ones that have 30+ blocks and swtches. A quick search will help ya.

TrinityJayOne - February 14, 2005 05:06 AM (GMT)
Yargh, that does indeed suck the big one. Good work Sony, ya twits. Mine aren't even the special ones, they're just regular 15 block cards.

By the way, I got mine at EB in Northland, Victoria. They were out of stock and had to order one in, so I'd say mine is the most recently produced model.

Over @ Eurogamer some gamers have been having problems with their 3rd partty mem cards. I geuss you'll have to get an official Sony mc, trin. Sux. :(

Thanks for the warm welcome. :)

My Dual Shock 1 controllers are original. The weird thing is that my non-analogue ps1 controller works fine on the psTwo =/.

WTF?! That's really...fucked. Let's all go and burn Sony HQ!!!!

...right after we get our copies of GT4. <_<

fRaNkS - February 14, 2005 05:56 AM (GMT)
My sentiments exactly. :D

Weird.

I too have a Slimline PS2. I have a PSX memory card in my system so I can play Symphony of the Night. Not a problem at all as far as recognising it.

Now here is the weird part. The memory card is third party one because I couldn't find an official PSX mem card.

TrinityJayOne - February 14, 2005 06:52 AM (GMT)
Hmmm...care to tell us what brand it is? One of mine is made by Blaze, and I forgot the other one...

StueyRowls - February 14, 2005 07:01 AM (GMT)
I've had my PStwo since launch and I havn't had a problem with my old PSX memory card, but it is a Sony one.

So far i've played THPS2 & 3, Ace Combat 3, and both Gran Turismo's and I haven't encountered a problem yet as the PStwo seems to load and save on the card fine.

It sounds like it's different from machine to machine, so maybe Sony's software to run the old PSX stuff is a bit buggy :(

The brand is 4Gamers.

I should point out I've only tested it on Symphony of the Night as it is the only PSX game I own.

TrinityJayOne - February 14, 2005 07:41 AM (GMT)
That's fair enough, it wasn't the game that wasn't detecting it, it was the console itself. Either way, not happy Jan.

Then its a factory defect Trin? :/

My normal PS2 doesn't detect the PS1 Analogue controllers sometimes. It seems dependant on the game. Not sure if that's related to your problem...

How much is a PS1 memory card these days though? I thought they'd be pretty cheap... Couldn't you just buy a Sony brand card and use the PS1 to move your files across?

casual_pedestrian - February 21, 2005 08:52 AM (GMT)
My multitap didn't work on my friend's pstwo. The controllers and mem cards were all official sony stuff.

We were trying to play NBA Street V3, so that's pretty disappointing to see ps2 stuff not working on it.

[DZ] - February 21, 2005 09:37 PM (GMT)
Loach, it actually depends on the game. If a game needs you to use an anlogue button then you'll have to bring out that DS2 cos DS1's don't have analogue (or pressure sensitive) face buttons. ;)

TrinityJayOne - February 21, 2005 11:07 PM (GMT)
Yeah, old multitaps have been made redundant at each release of a new console version. Although it's disappointing all the same, it's worse with the memory cards because they never mentioned anything about it happening. What shits me the most is that they've obviously gone and changed some of the architecture of the memory card/controller ports, yet we're still stuck with the same crappy system GUI. Has a Sony executive ever fired up a Cube? Now there's a funky GUI! ;)

[DZ] - February 22, 2005 01:10 AM (GMT)
Actually, I like the XBox's greeny GUI, very sexy. Can't wait to see how the nest gen's browsers look like. :D

Fyuusii - February 23, 2005 08:30 AM (GMT)
You're using third-party mem-cards, Trin?

You know, one of my old third-party cards was once recognized as a POCKETSTATION while I played through Final Fantasy VIII.

Don't trust them. :P
