That's the same model as mine, except mine's the
boring OEM model, since the sexy one wasn't out at the time. :( (But at least it's black. :))
Manny M - February 13, 2005 08:56 PM (GMT)
It was out, you're just a cheap arse :P
Seriously though, you made the right choice saving $100 just for aesthetics.
I've got the funky black one too.
[DZ] - February 13, 2005 10:18 PM (GMT)
Hey, I got a question. If I had a SATA HDD, and used a SATA cable instead of IDE therefore not utilizing the Primary IDE port, can I use that port for the optical drive or should I only use the Second IDE port??
Manny M - February 14, 2005 03:39 AM (GMT)
Use whichever port you want!!
Just make sure that if you are using seperate ports, to correctly set the master's and slave's.

Hello - February 16, 2005 08:01 AM (GMT)
I've got an inbuilt burner, inside my computer, and it works like a dream. Nice and quick, and you can get a decent quality off it, too. I enjoy burning stuff.
Any recommendations for quality burnable CDs?
I use Verbatim, Cd-R, 700mb, 52x, Super Azo.
They're a bit under $20 for 10. Anybody know of a cheaper/better alternative?
dave_cool31 - February 16, 2005 09:19 AM (GMT)
I've got an LG Super Multi 16X Dual Layer burner same as [M]av... Oh and I've heard that Verbatim's a good brand but I had some and after a while they didn't work on my older burner (my old burner was no good though... But it seemed to burn other brand CD-R's for some reason...) I've heard Verbatim are good though...

Considering I bought 50 DVD-Rs for $27 about 6 months ago, I think those CDs are a tad overpriced. ;)
Go to JB-HiFi am I'm sure you could pick up a 50 CD spindel for at least $25.
kami - February 16, 2005 12:15 PM (GMT)
And I'm pretty sure I recall seeing a 100 spindle for something like $30 or $40.
I have a Liteon CD burner. It burns, it reads CDs. that's perhaps adequate enough. Well it also occasionally makes screeching noises that sounds like the CD is about to be broken in half, but I'm assuming that's a bonus extra.
I've been expecting my next computer to havea Dual layer DVD burner, of course, now I'm wondering if I really do need it since I don't really burn stuff all too much...
BrotherEstapol - February 16, 2005 01:35 PM (GMT)
...and that Dual-Layer Discs are still around th $12 mark. :P

You bought 10 CD-R's for just under $20!
Maybe if it was 1999, it would be ok, but it's 2005 dude! :P

What, so you get the same sound quality off the 50 CDs for $25? Damn. I still like getting the CDs in individual cases, though...
[DZ] - February 16, 2005 10:29 PM (GMT)
In the US, you can buy 20 CD-R's for like one buck! Seriously. :o

Though with the storage capacity of Dual-Layer Discs, doesn't it work out to be cheaper than CD-R's?

Hell yeah. You got ripped! :P
Even with cases, you shouldn't be paying $1 a cd.
[DZ] - February 17, 2005 02:12 AM (GMT)
Hopefully, with Blu Ray and HD DVD's, shops will practically "giving" CD-R's and DVD-R's away!

Well there's a chance they could go UP, sort of like what happend with VHS.
But it wouldn't be as bad, as the factories that make DVD's also make CD's, which means that the same factories could also make Blu-Rays and HD-DVD's.

If you're paying $1-$2 per CD (which is kinda ridiculous for a CD-R) and Dual Layer DVD-R's are actually $12 each then it'd work out about the same or cheaper to get a Dual Layer DVD-R but if you're buying like 100 CD-R's for $20 or something then according to Estapol's Dual Layer DVD-R pricing it'd work out significantly cheaper to buy the CD-R's... Of course it'd be less convenient...
It looks like single layer DVD-Rs might be the way to go now if they can be attained for less than half the price of Dual Layer DVD-Rs and not too much more than CD-Rs... If you have a DVD burner that is...
By the way Manny, what brand DVD-Rs are they and where did you get them from(I'm assuming they're single layer)?

Put it this way:
1 CD-R (0.7gb) = From $0.20(50 for $10) to $0.30(50 for $15) each
1 DVD-R (4.7gb) = From $0.40(50 for $20) to $0.50(50 for $25) each
1 Dual-Layer DVD-R (8.5gb) = From $10 to $12 each
(I was going to try and work out how many megs per $ you would get with each one, but I couldn't be arsed. :P)
Everyway you look at it, DVD-Rs are by far the cheapest option at the moment.

Uhh the brand is "UL-Tran" and they're the white inkjet printable ones. My boss bought some before (local computer shop), and never had any with problems.
Shownarou - February 17, 2005 09:27 PM (GMT)
I have a Lite-On CD burner, I just use my moms computer for burning DVD's. It's true.. You really can buy 100 CD's for $1! But you have to live here, in America.. It's an even trade!

Whoa dude...You're telling me You live in America...and I've played CS with you?
I just thought you were on 56k. >_>
Anyway.
I have a 52x 'Diamond Data' reader. :( I hope to get a 16x Pioneer Burner sometime this year though.
Loaded_Toaster - March 3, 2005 04:28 AM (GMT)
I have:
Lite-On CD-RW SOHR-5238S
Pioneeer DVD-RW DVR-108
I bought 50 DVD-R's for $37 the other day (which is about the best price I can get here in Tassie :( ) I think they are the same as Manny got, cos they are the white printable ones....although it says they can only go 8X my burner normally burns at 16X with them :P
Iv got about 100 CD-R's sitting around here too...payed about $40 for 2 50 spindles a while back....
Got a few TDK DVD-RW's too....just use them for stuff that I only temporarily need off my HDD so I know I can always re-write them ;)

Well 16x discs are still quite pricey atm, and 8x were as well last year.
But I saw 50 printable 8x for $25 the other day, so the prices drop pretty fast.
