Title: Flash Signatures
Description: Is it possible?
_MetalliX_ - February 10, 2005 10:19 AM (GMT)
Well the heading pretty much says what I want to... so flash animation in signatures, possible?
Comrade Natrak - February 10, 2005 12:25 PM (GMT)
I guess it depends on whether you can use HTML in your signature or not. If you can amange it I'm sure there'd be no problems with using a flash signature as long as you keep it under the 40kb limit for signatures.
BrotherEstapol - February 10, 2005 02:29 PM (GMT)
Flash files would be way harder to monitor, and they can potentially cause havok.(e.g. like causing multiple pop-up windows)
As cool as Flash sigs would look, I'm afriad the is no chance in hell of us implementing them.
But yes, it is possible to have them.

PALGN's forums have flash sigs, but hey use phpBB. I wouldn't mind trying to look into getting them, but don't hold your breath.

Allow HTML To Embed the .swf files into sigs.

Easier said than done...
I was mostly just curious, I found a really cool flash ad for Splinter Cell which I thought would look good as a sig.

I can use flash. =)
Well, sorta.. =/

It's easy as ;)
BrotherEstapol - February 12, 2005 11:39 AM (GMT)
I'm not a flash nazi or anything, but I really don't think we should have flash sigs here for funtionality reasons.
Gio - February 12, 2005 11:41 AM (GMT)
So should I take this sig down?
:3
BrotherEstapol - February 12, 2005 12:01 PM (GMT)
Didn't you get my PM reply? :S
That's a "yes" to that for now please. ;)
Gio - February 12, 2005 12:05 PM (GMT)
Heh heh, yeah it took me a while to notice it. >_<
;)
Moggo - February 12, 2005 01:09 PM (GMT)
What was wrong with Gio's sig? It was just the Sonic one, right? If you blokes made him take that down... that's bullshit!
This better not be because Sytadel didn't like it... he mentioned it last week that he 'didn't like them'...?

Well I had to take it down becuase it's still undecided whether users will be allowed to us .swf sigs. That and my sig was 36 kb too big.
BrotherEstapol - February 12, 2005 01:47 PM (GMT)
Like Gio said; the sig was too large, and didn't fit the sig criteria.
You have to remember Moggo that some of our users are using older PCs and/or are on 56k, and flash can slow things down signifcantly.
Gio - February 12, 2005 01:56 PM (GMT)
The ironic thing is that I'm on 56k. ^_^
Moggo - February 13, 2005 05:39 PM (GMT)
Yes, me too. Kind of makes you wonder...
kami - February 15, 2005 08:13 AM (GMT)
Though I was wondering, wouldn't flash signatures also give rise to the ossibility of sigs with music?

Yes, that's one of the things I was talking about.
Who the hell wants a song to play when you enter a thread? NO-ONE! Especially if there is more than one sig on the page...as well as annoying pop-ups. :argh:
Plus for 56kers it'll kill loading times.
Then there's the chance of malicous software getting onto your HDD via the files...the cons definately outweight the pros.
Yes, we could have them and run on a trust system, but that's too risky.
Eyce - February 15, 2005 08:59 AM (GMT)
Um, Estapol, It is possible to make the Sigs Rollovers, so they only play when the mouse goes over it. Or you can just make a clickable button to listen to it.
kami - February 15, 2005 09:05 AM (GMT)
But I think the main issue is that it'd be very hard to regulate.
Still, it would have been cool to have part of the Troubled Windows theme in my sig ^_^

Yes, but you can also make them play on loading, and you can also make them so that you can't turn the music off at all.
Fact is, if implemented, we would have no way of stopping people doing this.
The last thing you guys want is to load a page and find that some tosser has decided to have a small wav file(like annoying quote from movie) loop over and over via his sig.
Once again; Cons > Pros.
