Title: PC News Thread

drewgcn - April 30, 2004 02:13 AM (GMT)
We used to have this thread over at hyper, and it worked pretty well just as a place to post and discuss PC news, articles etc.

So if you find anything interesting, whack it on!

Just to get the ball rolling...

Firstly, AMD is releasing a new Athlon XP/64 (bit of a mixture of both architectures) codenamed paris, a 32-bit processor that runs on Athlon 64-bit motherboards. It will be a faster Athlon XP, as it is based on some Athlon 64 architecture (except 64-bit), such as the integrated PC3200 memory controller. This is pretty sweet news, as it is
  • going to bring Athlon 64 motherboard prices down
  • a faster version of Athlon XPs at the same clockspeed
  • a cheaper version of chips with the Athlon 64 architecture (memory bandwidth!!!)
  • Allows for upgradeability to real Athlon64 chips when 64-bit becomes more widespread, as it is based on the same socket design/pin output as Athlon64s
Info at Digitimes and XbitLabs

Also theres some good PCI Express and DDR2 News and Info at Xbitlabs

And theres a new CPU maker coming on the market - they haven't got the speed right away (their current 300mhz processor they are working on can outperform a 2ghz competition they say though), but they have obviously got some good clock-for-clock efficiency, and allows the chip instructions (things like SSE and 3DNow!) to be reprogrammed as different programs are run. They are releasing their chips initially for video and networking this year, but they're expected to expand in the future. Some forumers of other sites expect them to become CPU competition in the future... Info at News.Com

Well the last release date we got was November, and that was given last year, and we havent heard much news about it since, so I've got my doubts about it being released this year.

What do you mean? Intel are releasing lots of new CPUs this year. Look out for LGA 775 socket next few months...

But BTX doesnt really affect what chips will be made, except for helping cooling a bit.

Yeah I am waiting for BTX as well, once BTX arrives I will do a full upgrade. Probably ot the latest AMD64, unless Intel can produce something I am interested in.
With all the new Hardware/Software being released from now until BTX the next wave of PC's are sure to be quite interesting. :)

NVIDIA RELEASE SHADER MODEL 3.0 SCREENSHOTS

Nvidia has just released some spanking new shots of what their next gen cards will pump out: Shader Model 3.0 (Pixel Shader 3.0 and Vertex Shader 3.0). These screens are taken from a demo using the FarCry engine :o

NOTE: ATi are heavily rumored not to include PS 3.0 in their next gen cards, looks like we could have a fight on our hands :P

oVer: it seems that they werent from PS2 to PS3 but rahter PS1 to PS2, as PS3 doesn't change the image quailty, only how it is programmed, another bad by nVidia.

Yeah, nvidia once again get in shit with the consumers. It actually says PS 1.1 on those photos though.

WHOAH!

Lordage considering not buying an Intel, for an AMD. Never thought I'd see the day...

To be honest nor did I, but they have really impressed me of late.

As for the nVidia news, those shots are quite impressive, although I will be more interested to see what ATi come up with, they always seem to be one step ahead of nVidia. :P

I love you ATi.

That's a damn sweet card. If only I didn't spend so much on my 9800Pro 9months ago :(
