Title: Level Editors
Description: UnrealEd, CryEngine Sandbox, whatever.

Anybody do any level editing?
I'm of the opinion that the Unreal Tournament 2004 DVD edition had one of the best bonuses ever, in the form of the many, many hours of video tutorials on UnrealEd and all the other mod-making methods. I personally am still at the very basic stage of learning all the intricacies of the software (and I don't have great hopes of learning much more, my computer skills are far from great), but I've had a lot of fun with it. To my mind the appeal of UnrealEd is a lot like the appeal of SimCity or Theme Park, or the house building elements of The Sims 2, only a thousand times more diverse in what it can do.
I've also done a little bit of stuff with the CryEngine Sandbox, which is truly awesome at creating tropical islands :P I haven't done a lot more with it, but it looks pretty cool.
So, anybody got any creations I could download, and find out how much more I've got to learn? Anybody interested in downloading one of my levels (well, I've actually only got one Unreal level that's even approaching completion)?

I have been meaning for some time to get into a level design program of some sort, but as of yet I haven't had the time, and up until recently, the bandwidth.

I've been meaning to take a stab at making a game level, but I just haven't bothered yet. :P
If you are serious about level design, keep to it, because the industry needs level deisgners as all the modellers want to get Character design jobs. ;)

I'm kind of past the idea now... thanks to my parents, but back when I was interested in having a career in gaming I was heading mainly toward level design.

Yeah, I'm currently putting together a rather decent PC, my first one too. :D I'm finally gonna be gaming seiously with that plus my PS2 and I'm saving up for an XBox, or a Xenon if it does get released this year like they said.
Level designing sounds fun, esp for games like FC and UT! :)
BTW Metadude, what did your parents say about gaming??

Well you get a level editor type thing with Morrowind but I just thought it looked too damn complicated to bother with. I'm lazy.

UnrealED > You
:P
Seriously there is no friendlier level editor out there. I love the damn thing.
I've also gotta say I'm a big fan of TESTool (Morrowind's editor). True it isn't the easiest thing to learn but DAMN is that thing powerful. Thank God people did bother learning it because the number of mods out there really expand the games life.

The usual, not much money in it, not a stable career, etc...

Oh yeah, I forgot about the Morrowind construction set. I've had Morrowind on Xbox for ages but I've just bought it for the PC, mainly for the construction set. I haven't used it much but it does seem quite powerful. And downloading some mods is one of the first things on my agenda when I get ADSL (next week, I hope... I pray...). El Pres, what are some good places for Morrowind mods?

Not stable; yeah, but if you're really good at what you do, you'll have shitloads of work.
Not much money in it; oh my no. :D

Here, start with the basics. :P

Because big games only rake in more money than movies. :whistling:
ElPresidente - February 12, 2005 09:09 PM (GMT)
And that money goes to the publishers, not the developers. Very few developers got rich out of gaming.
It is a very high risk career, hence only get into it if you really love what you are doing.
There are safer ways to get into the games industry though... like games journalism. :D

I've made (well done about 80%) of a Doom 3 level. It's a remake of the original E1M1 map.
