Mmm... pumpkinny goodness. I started out listening to these guys from the single-disc version of their greatest hits, "Rotten Apples."
Since then I've gotten Gish, Siamese Dream, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, Adore, Machina and Machina II.
Phroawr, I'm loving it. Anyone else here a Pumpkins fan? Alot of people settle just for the Greatest Hits, I find, but that's ok ^^

I have 36 of their songs, two albums, but I'venever really heard them. They'll probably always be most famous for appearing on The Simpsons...

Most famous for appearing on The Simpsons?! Please, that shows just how little you know about the band. :P
Smashing Pumpkins are one of my favourite bands. I've yet to get a hold of all their albums however the three/four I have are absolutely awesome, with Rotten Apples featuring in my top five albums list.

Rotten Apples is great, but it's only their popular image :P Mellon Collie is probably my fav! What are the albums you've got? I can show you where to download Machina II completely legally if you'd like ^^
Oh, btw, yes, it does indeed prove how little :P

I have heard the pumpkins, but I was using an obscure joke by many critics of The Simpsons who say you haven't truley arrived as a star until you appear on The Simpsons ;)

Ah, apologies :P Tis so true but :P
Hello - February 8, 2005 07:18 AM (GMT)
I was a fan of the Pumpkins back in the day, but haven't really listened to them for about 5 years, or so. Anyways:-
Siamese Dream would probably have to be my fave album - Disarm, Today, Silverfuck etc. Great album, and it still stands up well today.
I never really got into Mellon Collie, as I felt it was a bit too much of a wank. Still, there's some truely amazing songs on that album, which are great examples of decent 90s alt-rock.
Adore was blasted by critics, on release, but I really dug it at the time. Sure there's some shit on it, but it's still not as bad as everybody made out.
As for Machina, arrgh...die, die, shit, die :P
I got Zwan's debut, and I've got similar thoughts about that disc, as above, die, die, shit, die.

Machina wasn't THAT bad. Sure, it was a mess of synth-instruments at times (many times), but there was still some good songwriting on there. Unfortunately though, there was some really bad songwriting. Like Heavy Metal Machine, god that was terrible.
Twas very different, and I think the reason most people didn't like it because it was not really alternative rock anymore... I like to think of it as synth-rock :D But given their amount of quality material before I was happy to see them branch off a bit.
I've been doing alot of surfing on them recently, and there is a shitload of unreleased material for download. Stuff like Machina II, "Mashed Potatoes" 5-CD set of Live and Unreleased demos and stuff. And there's a helluva lot of live stuff.
If you liked Adore, check this out... I honestly think this live gig is better than the album. I did think the album was good, but a bit slow at times. This live show makes it alot more interesting and rockiegoody. Annie-Dog is truly brilliant, especially with the piano solo.
http://westernavenue.net/media/?act=view&u...0Darby%2C%20USAThere's alot of live stuff on that site, but it's a gamble, you might get shonky horrible recordings. This one, however, is great. If you want a list of more ones, I shall report my findings.
edit: If by wank you mean a bit self-indulgent and overdone at times, I'd agree. The song XYU was fantastic, but the length was utterly ridiculous. But I still love Mellon Collie.
P.S. : Oh, that link doesn't work. If you really want it, I'll give you directions.

Gish, Disarm, Picies Iscariot, Melon Collie, Adore, Machina, Rotten Apples and The Aeroplane Flies high Boxset. All feature in my cd collection. Plus Viewphoria.
The best cd by far is Melon Collie, Perhaps one of the best cd's of all time in my opinion. How they manage to fit so many good songs on 2 cd's still amazes me. (besides James Iha's song ;) )
Heres a little fact, the first cd I bought was Disarm and the last cd I bought was Emotive.

If you liked Judas O then you'll also like picies as its pretty much the same, obscure b sides etc.
The Aeroplane Boxset is just the collection of singles from melon collie with a booklet and of course a snazzy box.
he actual song aeroplane flies high (found on the Thirty Three single) Is a ripper of a song and a must have.
Easily my favourite B-side and comes close to my favourite smashing pumpkins song.

Yeah, TAFH is on Judas O, it's pretty darn good. Impossible to say favourite Pumpkins song though, I like em cause of their variety really. Saturnine, Where Boys Fear to Tread, 1979, Set The Ray to Jerry all rank up there though.
