Title: The Official Mario Kart DS Thread
Description: Noline this November!

UltraGekko - January 28, 2005 12:53 AM (GMT)
Edit: I've mirrored the video on my webspace (and I believe Estapol has mirrored it as well).
Estapol: I've put both the links next to each other to make it easier.

New Mario Kart Video!
Mirror 1
Mirror 2

Not too much revealed at this stage but the guy (the video is from the latest conference) says it's coming out later this year at the same time (worldwide launch).

The second screen shows your position as well as the items other racers are carrying so it seems a little strategy will be involved in whether to hang on to that green shell for protection or whether you should wait to shoot that red shell.

Graphics look great with fully 3D character and kart models (remember the ugly sprites in MK64?) and share the art style of Double Dash.

I could be wrong but from the video it looks like at least 5 guys (Iwata is one of them) are competing in the same race. I hope you can do Grand Prix with more than 2 players this time.

The 'hop' was shown at E3 but it looks like it's here to stay.

Since I've changed it to the official thread here are some previous screenshots of the game.

Holy moley, that looks so much better than I expected! :woot:

If there's a black DS when MKDS comes out, I'll buy without question! :D

Shadow Knight - January 28, 2005 01:48 AM (GMT)
Yeah, looks really cool.
Can't wait! :D

borgster101 - January 28, 2005 02:53 AM (GMT)
Looking good :) , it's also nice to see that the charatcer customised karts (of Double Dash fame) actually look more like go karts this time round, yet maintaining more personality than the generic N64 karts.

UltraGekko - January 28, 2005 03:39 AM (GMT)
I just had another look at the video and it seems at least 6 people are competing in the same race (5 standing plus the guy who is using the display DS).

They'll have another customer if that turns out. ;)

I can't say I agree.

The footage is what looks good. :D

DJ-Civic - January 28, 2005 04:00 PM (GMT)
Nooooooooo!!!! The video isn't there any more. :( Can anyone host it?

But yeah, the game is looking good. Nice to see they're racing in actual go-karts...

Manny M - January 28, 2005 11:22 PM (GMT)
I think it looks really jaggy, and pretty damn average overall.

BrotherEstapol - January 29, 2005 02:02 AM (GMT)
Did you look at the video? Or just the screenshots?

Civ, I'll try and upload the video for you.

EDIT:Here ya go Civ.

Manny M - January 29, 2005 01:08 PM (GMT)
Just the pics so far. I'll have a look at the vid soon enough.

Thanks Bro. Downloading now. :D

Pauly - January 29, 2005 01:41 PM (GMT)
Okay, I was going to give this game a miss but after seeing that video I might have to pick this game up. Any word on when it releases?

Huss_GTR - January 29, 2005 11:27 PM (GMT)
Yeah i wasnt too keen on this game but ill be sure to pick it up. Multiplayer should be fun :D Especially since i hvae pre-ordered 2 DS's (one for me, one for my brother)

Would this be multiboot?

You mean does everyone need the game to play it?

I'd hazzard a guess and say yes.

borgster101 - January 31, 2005 12:56 AM (GMT)
If Mario Kart on the GBA had the option to have single cart play I'd assume the DS version would be the same.

JJJames7 - January 31, 2005 01:13 AM (GMT)
It's fairly stupid to include the vision of what other players have as items, because we have never had it in the past and it takes some of the strategy away.

I find the screenshots to have amazingly good graphics, and I'm trying to watch the movie, but the stupid buffering takes ages. I'll definatly get this when it comes out.

EDIT: Shitty 56k connection + Lots of buffering = not alot of movie watching, but I've seen Bowser in action and it fucking rocks. The details are amazing, and the animation is so smooth! :D

It's the truth damn it!!

JJJames7 - January 31, 2005 03:56 AM (GMT)
Well, I'm assuming they held a video camera to a DS screen- not bound to be DVD quality.

BrotherEstapol - January 31, 2005 04:48 AM (GMT)
Nah, it was being shown on a projector, and the camera was a bit shakey.

And Manny, you should really take a look at this side-by-side video comparision of Mario 64 and Mario DS, then tell me which version is graphically better.

Sybatical - February 2, 2005 10:15 PM (GMT)
Phoar! Im mighty impressed! It looks a thousand times better then the video's which were shown last year.

JJJames7 - March 17, 2005 10:02 AM (GMT)
Well I dowloaded the movie on my shoddy 56k (running at 52k :P ) and I was fairly impressed, although my gaming era of time is drawing to a close...

Looks very good though, and the wireless should be a laugh.

Film Guru - March 18, 2005 08:00 AM (GMT)
Woah! That video was hella fine! Wow, 8 player wireless duel screen Mario Kart that looks that good? Damn peoples, it's a kick ass time to be a portable gamer! :woot:

UltraGekko - March 19, 2005 01:18 PM (GMT)
If anyone has seen Iwata's GDC speech you will know he invited up 6 people from the audience to participate in an 8 player game of Mario Kart (the 7th guy was a NoA staff member and the 8th was Iwata himself).

Nothing new was shown (it was the same track as in the previous video) but it was cool to see again nonetheless.

kami - March 20, 2005 10:09 AM (GMT)
I heard for the game he just asked if anyone had a birthday that week to raise their hand and they were chosen to take part in it.

borgster101 - March 21, 2005 02:34 AM (GMT)
Yeah I believe he asked if anyone had a birthday that day, and then that week.

NoA staff member: Go for Mario everyone.
Iwata: Nooo!!

Heh heh, I found that funny. ^_^

dave_cool31 - July 9, 2005 07:11 AM (GMT)
lol.

Wow Mario Kart DS is really shaping up to be a major killer app for the DS. I thought that video was going to be the one from the GDC but I was very pleasantly surprised to see something new and the graphics are remarkably great for the DS.

I just hope it gives the option to reconfigure the buttons to make B = accelerate and X = brake because from I know from playing Mario Kart Super Circuit on DS it's a painful experience using the DS's A button to accelerate and B to brake. Blasted DS button config! >_<

kami - July 10, 2005 12:07 PM (GMT)
And it seems they aren't going to try use the touchscreen in a imicky way.

In a recent interview with the producer Hideki Konno, some new information was revealed regarding Mario Kart DS.

Rather than giving you the whole interview, we bullet pointed all the information and possibilities. Some old info, some new.

Features
# Over 30 courses
# Approximately half of the courses are new
# 8 Player Single-Card download play
# 4 Player online mode via Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection
# You can choose the same characters in Multiplayer mode, for example, everyone can be Mario but you will be able to tell the difference because of the players names over the karter's head.
# Battle Mode is available
# Computer A.I is improved
# Battle Mode is available online, but no co-op play
# The Touch Screen can be used to draw decals on your karts (no doubt parts of the body)
# Possible touch-control steering
# The DS features will be used, Hideki Konno said they wanted to make a Balloon weapon where you blow on the microphone to blow the balloon up
# The feather item from Super Mario Kart is being considered

Where's the Mario Kart DS hype peoples? :P

Some more info from a NOE interview with Hideki Konno.

QUOTE
Hideki Konno is a busy man. Not only is he in charge of producing the eagerly awaited Mario Kart DS (coming to Europe on November 11) but he’s also the brains behind the smash hit Nintendogs.

When it comes to four-wheeled fun, though, instead of four-legged friends, Mr Konno is the world authority. He was director of both the original Super Mario Kart and also Mario Kart 64, and supervised Mario Kart: Super Circuit on GBA. Nowadays he works at EAD, Nintendo’s ‘Entertainment, Analysis and Development’ team, where he’s putting the finishing touches to Mario Kart DS.

Through his translator, we got the lowdown on how the marvellous-looking new Mario Kart is shaping up.

Nintendo of Europe: Previous Mario Kart games have had a ‘gimmick’, like the dual characters in Double Dash!!. What’s the ‘gimmick’ going to be in Mario Kart DS?

Hideki Konno: “This time we’ve gone back to basics, so only one player rides on one kart. And we’re taking advantage of the wireless communication capabilities of the Nintendo DS, so this time up to eight players can simultaneously play against each other wirelessly.

“We wanted the multiplayer game to involve more people playing simultaneously than ever before, and it had to be simple and quick enough for people to set up.

“Another very important factor is that we are going to make Mario Kart DS Wi-Fi capable. In other words, if you own a Nintendo DS and Mario Kart DS you can play against strangers in any part of the world.”

NoE: How does the game make use of the special features of Nintendo DS?

HK: “We are incorporating many DS-original items but I’m afraid I cannot dwell on this point now. But one of the ideas that we haven’t openly disclosed yet is that we are taking advantage of the dual screen.

“For example, one item added to the Nintendo DS version is the squid character from Super Mario Sunshine. [Gooper Blooper]. Because it’s a squid, it can spit out ink and if you are the victim you cannot see the upper screen because it’s painted with ink for a certain amount of time. But because it’s a dual screen, on the lower screen you have the map so you know where you are and where others are.”

NoE: What can you tell us about the courses in the game? We heard there will be a mixture of classic and new tracks.

HK: “We identified 16 of the best courses that people really enjoyed playing in the past, so we are now compiling these courses into the Nintendo DS version. I believe that the players who used to play these courses are going to have a very nostalgic feeling.

“We have also added 16 new courses, and because Nintendo DS is a highly capable machine we are actually creating some kind of topography so that there are ups and downs in the courses, and some new tweaks.”

NoE: Can you tell us about some of these ‘tweaks’?

HK: “There’s a course where you are actually driving through a huge pinball table with bumpers and flippers. There are huge iron balls going through the course and you have to be very careful not to be hit by them.”

NoE: And can we look forward to anything special in the single player mode?

HK: “One of the original objectives of making Mario Kart DS was to intensify the one player mode. Before we had simply the Grand Prix racing and Time Trial modes but this time we have made some changes so that even in a versus match you can actually play by yourself, in other words the computer is going to become the opponent. And also in the Battle Mode the computer can be your opponent so that you can play by yourself.”

NoE: Sadly we’re running out of time. Before we go, is there a message you’d like to give to our readers?

HK: “By now we have made several different Mario Kart series and I really don’t want anyone to say ‘Oh, there have been too many Mario Kart series over the years, I don’t need any more’.

“Whenever we are making a new Mario Kart we are trying to make it something special, something new and something really unprecedented. This time we have really challenged ourselves so that this DS version will become something really unique. So I hope the members of Nintendo-Europe.com are going to play it and enjoy it!”

NoE: Mr Konno, thank you very much for your time!

A couple new screens.

can't come quick enough I say

borgster101 - August 23, 2005 11:27 AM (GMT)
With Zelda not coming out this year, this is the big Nintendo game for christmas 2005.

auhsor - August 24, 2005 04:10 AM (GMT)
Awesome... I havn't got a DS yet, but if this turns out to be a must own title then I'm there.

edit: Anyone noticed the strange camera angle on the top screen? I'm sure they allow you to have the conventionl camera behind the player also.

borgster101 - August 24, 2005 06:09 AM (GMT)
The strange camera angle is probably a replay mode.

NismoR34 - August 25, 2005 02:39 AM (GMT)
You think so? The previous versions haven't had a replay mode so it would rock if this one did. (did Double Dash have one?)

I'm still waiting until Animal Crossing's release before I get my DS but I think I can definitely say that I will be getting this new Mario Kart alongside AC. It looks fantastic and well I skipped Double Dash so it is time for another Mario Kart for me. :)

UltraGekko - August 25, 2005 06:49 AM (GMT)
Double Dash had a replay option when you finished a race. Previous Mario Kart games had the race angles that followed your racer after you finished a race and the AI took over.

The fact there are no results screens and the lap counter showing the first lap in those screenshots seems to indicate it is a replay of a race.

I need to get MKDS on launch, provided it's in an online bundle :P

Well considiring the online functions are integrated within the game itself and there are no additional charges for using the service, it's essentially online ready, unless of course you dont have broadband access at home and are unable to access Hot Spots. It'll be good to hear some 'Australian' specific online information regarding Nintendo hot spots.
