Title: Tournament: Super Smash Bros. Melee
Description: Melbourne University, 14th Feb 2005.
CAOTIC - January 27, 2005 05:08 AM (GMT)
Anyone from this forum interested in participating or even spectating? :( There will be many players from all over Australia and one from overseas; players range from pro to novice. It's being held in Melbourne, so if you've got the time, check it out... ^^
This game may be over 3 years old, but it's still good fun.

Ah crap. I'm not used to Melee. But gimmie the original Smash Bros. and Kirby and I'll mop the floor with ya. :P
Pauly - January 27, 2005 08:48 AM (GMT)
This belongs in Ninty General methinks.
DJ-Civic - January 27, 2005 11:07 AM (GMT)
I'll move it but I'll leave a ghost thread behind.
Unfortunately I'm not in Melbourne so can't attend. Sounds cool though.
~DC - January 27, 2005 11:15 AM (GMT)
Too late already moved it Civic. :P

hypermonkey - February 3, 2005 05:48 AM (GMT)
I'd go but I'd get my ass kicked.
So I think I'll happyer with th $10.:P
CAOTIC - February 3, 2005 10:09 AM (GMT)
For prizes, it really depends on the turnout. Whatever money surpasses the reserve for hiring costs etc, might end up as pot money. But seeing as quite a few have forked out hundreds just to attend the event, it really in the end is all about just playing competitive Smash - not for prizes.
It's for... youuu knoowww.... bragging rights :P
One of the most respected smashers in the world will also be in attendance, so if you really want to see how you'd fare compared to the very best, you owe it to yourself to check it out... ^^
Shadow Link - February 3, 2005 10:14 AM (GMT)
I'm going, and I can't wait to get my arse kicked. :P
It's gonna be a good day, and you'll really see just how in-depth this "Candy fighter" really is, imo, probably the most in-depth fighter you'll find.
And refine your "roll, smash, roll, smash" skills guys, it'll take more than that to win at the tournament. ;)
~DC - February 3, 2005 11:12 AM (GMT)
Wow, nice to see you finally decided to came back to Evo Shadow Link. :P

I'm almost tempted to go, since I'm trying to go to uni everyday anyway, but it's been such a long time since I played Smash Brothers. Most likely I'll get crushed in the first round...
Maybe I'll just pay the $5 entry and watch. It's not like I have anything better to do on valentines day :P

No prizes? Why would a bloke from the US travel all the way to Australia to play in some video game contest for no reason, other than to have bragging rights to people he's probably never gonna to see again? Sounds like somebody's cousin, from the US, is just coming for a holiday, and the bull crap started to spin.
kami - February 3, 2005 11:57 PM (GMT)
Well, the entry is just $10 and they do have to hire the theatre and stuff. I wouldn't expect much money left over for prizes unless they managed to get NAL to sponsor them.
CAOTIC - February 4, 2005 01:39 AM (GMT)
Hello, there's a few things I will address with you.
Firstly, I said prizes will depend on turnout.
Second of all, no US players are expected to attend. The person is coming from Japan, sponsered by dedicated Aussie Smashers to attend the tournament. He is widely recognised by the elite Smash community as the very best in the world, and has travelled to the US and EU many times to prove his worth. If you're under the impression that this is some random fling with Smash n00bs, well you're very wrong.
Most of the entrants know of all the advanced techniques and can call upon them at will. If you're going to fare well at this tournament you're at least going to have to understand the Smash tier list, counter characters, physics, inplement wavedashing, l-cancelling, short-hopped-fastfall-l-cancelled combos, techs, and the like. If you have no idea what I'm talking about, then you're way too n00bish to begin to even question the tournament and its profile. 4 will be from WA, 4 from SA, 1 from NSW, 2 from QLD, so it's more than a Melbourne Tournament - it's an Australian Tournament. I'm willing to back my claim that the very best Smashers from every major state in this country will be in attendance, as will Shadow Link. The Smash crew I know set the standard here, and if you're going to contest that, fight us.
This game is incredibly complex and deep. Large scale tournaments worldwide with a very large, devoted and competitive global community are testamants to this claim. If you think I'm exasperating the art of talking shit, wait until after the 14th and I will hook you up with some captured videos of the event.
PS - Entry and casual play is $5. The sinlges tournament is $10.

OK then. Good luck with it all, and I hope that it's a success
Still, if I were this Japanese "champion" I'd take the free plane trip here, and then split, not playing the tournament.

For the love of Smash, NOOOOO!!
lol.
Nah, we're hosting his stay over here, so he's obliged to attend. If not, he'll be stranded, hehe.
kami, I hope you come! ^^ If you think you will get wiped, the tourney's set up to allow beginners to face each other first, then the intermediates later, and so forth - a seeding system has been set in place. Don't get to cocky though - if you proclaim yourself to be a pro you'll definently be up shit creek!
Also, it's a double elimination, meaning that you'll get knocked out after 2 losses. So you can still win the tournament even if you've lost once. ;)
Shadow Link - February 5, 2005 04:22 AM (GMT)
lol Cao, i like how you said "The very best smashers will be attending, oh, and so will Slink" :P
Oh and btw, I've mained Falco yet again, got the whole Dave "SHL SHL shff dair l cancel spike" going perfectly too ;)
I recomend even just coming along to watch guys, it's going to be something you won't forget. :cheese:
And you're so full of it, "beginners v beginners" in the early rounds... Why did you "randomly" match me up with Captain Jack [That jap guy, for those unaware] for the second round, you prick? :P
CAOTIC - February 5, 2005 06:13 AM (GMT)
Lol, Slink you toss, you verse a person on your level first up. Mic from Perth. He plays Falco too, so I'm going to be enjoying this :D
Most people have it tough, not just yourself you attention whore! XD
2nd rounds are expected to be tougher.
Shadow Link - February 5, 2005 06:14 AM (GMT)
Sif Ditto, I'm unleashing Sheik. :P

www.virtuallycreated.com/forums have a couple more Aussie gamers, so you might want to drop a thread in there, too. Not a massive user base, but it'll probably pick up, and word might spread onto the #hyperactive mIRC channel.
