Title: Might buy a Cube.

evO - January 23, 2005 05:49 AM (GMT)
Well, i've been going into EB Games quite a bit lately, and after realising many-a-time that the ps2 range of games just wasn't my cup of tea, i've thought of buying a GameCube. I know shit all about them, just that i like the look of a lot of games it offers.
I saw the Cube today, at EB, for $139, or $149 (not sure). Compared to $230 for an Xbox, well 'nuff said. This is obviously just the base pack with the Console and one controller, does anyone know of any packs that may be available (Brisbane), that offer better value?

Cheers

Machiavelli - January 23, 2005 06:05 AM (GMT)
It's getting harder eveyday to find a Mario Kart bundle. Most stores are resupplying their Gamecubes with the generic ones (console with 1 controller). If you can find the Mario Kart bundle, get it. If you can't - $139 is a fantastic price and completely worth it.

Gio - January 23, 2005 06:07 AM (GMT)
If it's the basic GCN+Controller you shouldn't pay over $100.
Although it's definately worth $140 for those silver ones. :D

BrotherEstapol - January 23, 2005 06:29 AM (GMT)
Since the retail price of the GCN is $199, $139 is a damn good price. But you can get it cheaper.
Might I suggest looking around for some bundles(the Mario Kart, Metroid Prime, and Logitech Steering wheel pack come to mind) at some of the big stores.
Target, Big-W, Kmart and Toy R US in particular.

True, after christmas, you could buy new GCNs for $99, but $40 dollars more, for silver one, is just stupid, and you're a moron if you pay $40 more for the silver.

Also, in Europe they are releasing a Resident Evil 4 bundle witha special Black/Silver GCN. But I'm not sure if we'd get it here.

evO - January 23, 2005 06:35 AM (GMT)
Thanks fellas ;) I wasn't sure on what kind of bundles they offered. I knew the Xbox had one that came with Halo+something, but had no idea on the GCN.
There was a preowned one for $79, but i'd rather just pay $60 more for a brand newey. My mate i was hanging with today said his friend got one for $99, and that's what made me look in the first place. I can't spend too much, as i'm wanting a 12Month Gym membership, plus money to mess around with my car, so that's why an Xbox is out of the question, and if the packages are too much (GCN) then i will have to make do with the basic pack and one game..

Also, if i do just end up getting the console by itself, i will only be buying one, maybe two (definately 2 max), games. So, besides Smash Bros. Melee, which i want anyway, what else could i purchase?

NismoR34 - January 23, 2005 02:21 PM (GMT)
The two Metroid Prime games. You won't need anything else. :) [/fanboy]

*Agrees*

If someone has a cube and hasn't played these games, he isn't doing any justice to his cube.

Also, if u looking for something different to play, theres always Zelda: Windwaker, Viewtful Joe, Pikmin 1/2, Mario Sunshine and Animal Crossing.

Hello - January 23, 2005 08:35 PM (GMT)
Personally, I'd go for Super Mario Sunshine. However, it's not to everybody's tastes. I found it to be a great adventure, which made me feel like I was 10 years old again.

Pikmin 1 or 2 would be my other definite choices. But, if you don't like strategy games, then you might want to give it a miss. Think Lemmings and Command & Conquer and you've got some idea what Pikmin's about.

Resident Evil 4 is being released in March, too - This alone is reason to buy a cube.

Post what type of games you like, that might help a bit more.

Gio - January 24, 2005 01:16 AM (GMT)
You can't go without these:
Super Smash Bros. Melee
Pikmin 2
Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door
Donkey Konga

evO - January 24, 2005 01:35 AM (GMT)
What are Metroid Prime, Mario Sunshine and Paper Mario like?

So far i'm thinking Pikmin 1/2, Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door, Super Smash Bros. Melee, Zelda: Windwaker, or Metroid Prime 1/2.

So many choices...(i HATE decisions)

Huss_GTR - January 24, 2005 01:48 AM (GMT)
Metroid Prime has to be one of the Best games on Cube. IGN gave it 9.8 (which still is the highest ranking for a game on the cube today) so u wont go wrong.

Its like a FPS but ur in a huge adventure. You (literally) have to explore every section of the game, scanning objects and enemies. Not only that, but there is a deep and extremely involving storyline about a foreign and extremely inteligent race and what happened to them on their home planet.

This game is immensly detailed and very graphic. Environments are extremely detailed and animation add the icoing on the cake. Definately a Halo killer when it comes to 1P mode. It's basically something u have to experience for urself to understand why so many cube owners say metroid prime is the cube's best game hands down

markymark - January 24, 2005 01:57 AM (GMT)
any game that has the word 'mario', 'zelda' or 'metroid' on the cover is pretty much a guaranteed safe buy... unless the word 'party' follows the word 'mario'... damn i hated those games.

Gio - January 24, 2005 02:05 AM (GMT)
Mario Party killed my N64 controllers. :(

evO - January 24, 2005 02:12 AM (GMT)
I loved Mario Party :P.

Well i'm thinking Metroid Prime and Smash Bros. Melee.
Or maybe one of the other two Mario games (Sunshine/Paper) instead of Melee. That depends on what kind of games those two are, as i have no idea..
If Sunshine is similar to Super Mario 64, then i'll scratch that. Don't get me wrong, i liked SM64, but it gets kind of boring..
Maybe Harvest Moon? I loved the original :)

Huss_GTR - January 24, 2005 02:20 AM (GMT)
Well, i guess Paper Mario should be your pick as everyone rates this game highly, although i havent played it.

Go with SSB:M if u like multiplayer, alot of mayhem, and most importantly, if u have alot of patience :)

Don't even consider that, Smash Brothers is the only way to go. ;) (not that Sunshine and Paper are bad. :P)

I suggest you get Smash Brothers, Zelda: The Wind Waker and Metroid Prime.(which all happen to be Player Choice($49.95rrp) games)

CAOTIC - January 24, 2005 05:09 AM (GMT)
OMG, you have to get Melee (This is unless you're a lone wolf when it comes to playing games).

Good single player games:
- Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door (better than FFX).
- Zelda: The Wind Waker (the most refreshing game I've played for a long time).
- Metroid Prime/Echoes (not many games actually force me to stop playing because I need to gawk at the screen in pure awe...)

evO - January 24, 2005 05:54 AM (GMT)
So is Melee better suited to Multi? That's a good thing, but could also be a bad thing (brother is bad loser, lol.)
Is Paper Mario the same style game as FFX?

~DC - January 24, 2005 08:12 AM (GMT)
Here are some of my favourite GCN games that you couldn't go wrong with:

-- The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
-- Metroid Prime 1 & 2
-- Pikmin 2
-- Eternal Darkness
-- Resident Evil 1 & coming 4
-- Paper Mario 2
-- Super Smash Bros. Melee
-- F-Zero GX
-- Soul Calibur 2
-- Super Mario Sunshine
-- Star Fox Adventures

it's turn based combat... that's about it.

borgster101 - January 24, 2005 09:27 AM (GMT)
If you dont want to spend too much cash, then the Player's Choice games are probably the way to go, Melee and Prime are a pretty good start.

I agree with Estapol.
Though if you have an extra $50 I would Get Super Smash Bros. Melee, The Windwaker and Paper Mario in favor of Metroid Prime.
Though that might just be me.

evO - January 24, 2005 09:39 AM (GMT)
Maybe i should just read the Paper Mario thread..that may help :P.
What are "Player's Choice" games?

Cubeoid - January 24, 2005 10:49 AM (GMT)
I'm not sure whether it's based on sales or just what Nintendo choose. Either way they just have a silver case and retail at around 50 bucks.

If you are only going to get two games then I suggest you buy Metroid Prime first off. It's a brilliant game. With that in mind you need to think about the fact Resident Evil 4 will be out soon. That is looking to be the next best game besides Prime and will certainly be worth your money. If you don't want RE4 or will have enough money for it by the time it gets here then I would choose one of the following games:-

Soul Calibur 2
Metroid Prime 2: Echoes
Super Smash Bros Melee

As a note there is plenty to do in Melee in single player but it will become a bit boring if you only play that aspect of the game and not the multiplayer as well. Also you could also consider putting off buying Echoes if you do get Metroid just so you have two different styles of games.

~DC - January 24, 2005 11:05 AM (GMT)
If I was in your situation mate I'd get The Wind Waker and Metroid Prime. Both are Player's Choice (RRP $50) and are probably the top two games on the GCN at the moment. Each are also completely different games and offer a healthy challenge. Other than that I'd look out for Eternal Darkness which can be found at some places for under $30 and is one of the finest mature adventure games I've ever played, RE4 will have to be absolutely incredible to surpass it.

GAMES ARE HEALTHY NOW? :o *runs to tell doctor* :P

I played Super Smash Brothers Melee yesterday. ^_^

CAOTIC - January 24, 2005 12:18 PM (GMT)
Lol, I play it alot of days. Seriously, I'm a Smash whore.

@M: AUSTRALIAN TOURNAMENT, MELBOURNE

If you like RPG's you'll definently have to choose Paper Mario over Prime. It's a thoroughly entertaining game, and one which I expected to underwhelm me. But I was wrong. Hence, with little expectation I had of it, I found it to be one of the most rewarding RPG's for a long while. Prime wasn't the case. People told me, "Best. Game. Ever."

Then the game anticlimaxed, and just... ended. Sigh.

Oh well, just my crappy opinion... Still a great game though.

evO - January 24, 2005 01:11 PM (GMT)
Hmmm...the choices...Never had this problem with the ps2 :P

Smash Bros. Melee/Zelda: Windwaker along with Paper Mario/Metroid Prime, that's what i'm thinking right now...

Here come's the hard part, money..Dang :P

NismoR34 - January 24, 2005 03:13 PM (GMT)
What you're leaning towards is a decent start, so I think you should go for it.
Out of the 4 you selected, I'd go for Super Smash Bros. Melee and Metroid Prime.

Super Smash Bros. Melee is an awesome 'fighter', and you'll enjoy it immensely. It has quite a lot of things to do, whether it's the Arcade mode, Adventure mode, Event mode or just collecting the trophies (there's over 300), it'll definitely keep you busy. That's excluding multiplayer I might add. Include it, and you'll be playing this game for years to come. It's just that good.
Once you do finish the single player aspect though, unless you have friends it does become rather boring...

The Wind Waker is another brilliant Zelda gem, however certain aspects of the game make it a disappointing experience. It feels 'uncomplete' in parts and it doesn't have many dungeons, not when compared to OOT anyway. The game was excellent and you should not deprive yourself of the experience, however I wouldn't get it straight away. (unless I had the money of course)

Paper Mario is definitely recommended and you'll love it for its humour, fun gameplay and I guess its variety too. It's an awesome RPG and again, should not be missed. If you don't get SSBM, get this.

Metroid Prime, well what can I say. This game (tied with its sequel) is my second favourite game ever. It was structured brilliantly and brought the Metroid experience into full 3-D. I wouldn't label it an FPS with exploration either, as it has a lot more going for it then that. It's a challenging and fun game that you'll enjoy from start to finish. It isn't fustrating either, so if you aren't very good and keep dying, you'll only want to keep at it until you're successful. Definitely get this. :)

Hello - January 24, 2005 10:04 PM (GMT)
I'd seriously consider DC's recommendation of Eternal Darkness. Looking back on this title, I now realise just how good a game it was. Adventure, spooks, and a great story - what more could you want? The whole feel of the game was genius.

Thats becaus the PS2 doesnt have alot of quality games to choose from :P jokes.

I agree with Nismo's rant on which game to choose. In the end its up to you and your opinion, but u wont go wrong with any of those games.

Its a win - win situation :)

evO - January 24, 2005 11:05 PM (GMT)
:gamecube: Well i'm definately going to get SSBM, i think i'll get MP as well, rather than two Mario games. The next games i'll get will probably be Eternal Darkness and Paper Mario :)

Oh, and thank you to everyone for your help, i value your input. ^_^ It was a great help, thanks

I'm pretty sure on the box it says nearly 300 trophies.
Apart from that you're exactly right. :P

Anyway, does anyone know the exact number of trophies? Because I have 280 trophies and want to know how close I am to collecting them all! hehehehe! . :P

borgster101 - January 26, 2005 12:34 AM (GMT)
I think it's about 291.
